LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCE WEDNESDAY MAY 3, 1882. OVER THE STATE. NKTTS FKOM THK NE1GHBOBHUOD. Intelllceace la Brief from Varleu Cenntles efPeMqrlvMl. The Beading beard of trade is agitating the subject of abolishing tell bridges en the reads approaching the city. A sixteen year old girl has died in Har risbarg of smallpox and was buried by two faithful brothers. Scarlet fever is prevailing in Chester county with alarming fatality among children. In Chester county the acreage put in tobacco this year will be mere than double that of last year. Over one hundred workmen have been discharged from the iron works at Steel Steel ten, Dauphin county, the reason for which has net yet been made apparent. Reuben Wallace, of Perry county, plowed up two large black snakes the ether day. One of the reptiles made war and it re quired two te kill him. A passenger car, filled with people, at tached te a train, caught fire near West Chester ; the train was stepped, the pas sengers rushed out and the car burned te its wheels. Reading recently purchased a steam read roller, and en Saturday it was1 re moved te permanent quarters amidst throngs of people and vociferous yells of approval of Reading's "Jumbo." The managers of the Schuylkill canal have set workmen te cutting down the trees en the towpath side of that water way. The reason assigned is that the trees shade the water and make it difficult te steer the crafts. Mrs. Dera Kehn, thirty-five years old, committed suicide by hanging in the cellar of her residences, G43 Auburn street, Twenty-fifth ward, Philadelphia, at 11 o'clock last night. She had been suffering from melancholy. Joaquin Bishop who is the only platinum worker in the United States has broken ground and will erect a building at Sugar town, Chester county, te accommodate his business, which has increased se much within the last two years that he finds his present shop tee small. It is rumored that Breck and Raucb, the two escaped prisoners from the Leba non jail and who are supposed te be con cerned in the attempted robbery at Or wigsburg recently, have been several times seen in the streets at Lebanon late at night. Dr. De wees, of Fleetwood, Berks county, son or Ucerge Dewees, whose body was recently disinterred for examination into the manner of his death, proposes te pro pre pro secute all the parties who have aided in circulating the report that he was con cerned in the cause of his father's death. A committee composed of members from each of the fire companies at Norris town are hearing reports te take action towards the establishing of an electric system of fire alarms, for the better pro tection of the lives and property of the citizens. In Reading a handsome young servant woman, upon seeing Jehn Teger, who had been paying her attentions, walk off with anetber woman, took a dose of laudanum with suicidal intentions, and - lay down along side of a fence, where she was found unconscious. Proper remedies saved her from death. The Reading Evening Netcs has com pleted the second year of its prosperous and useful existence. It is an able and enterprising journal aud has wen its ad vanced place among the newspapers of Berks county by a strict conformity te business principles and faithful adherence te the best interests of the community from which it draws support. When the special train containing the Knights of Birmingham, of Philadelphia, visiting Reading, reached Pheenixville, bleed was seen te be trickling from the reef, and further search revealed the dead body of a man lying en top of the car, his head terribly cut from contact with a bridge. Nene of the excursionists could identify the body. Surveyors are at work determining the boundary line between Lehigh and North ampton counties. The work is very tedious and unpleasant, having te pass ever hills, through dales, weed sprouts and innumerable rocks. At the hotel of Mrs. Wierbach, in Colcsvilie, near the famous zinc mines, the surveyors rested for a night, some sleeping in Lehigh and the ethers in Northampton county, the dividing line passing through the bar room. In Westmoreland county, the house of .Mrs. Jiilizanetu stamp was broken into by three men, masked and disguised se that they could net be recognized. The old lady and her two daughters were bound and gagged. After searching the house the elder daughter was taken and a repe placed around her neck and hauled up te a rafter. About $200 in money was all that was secured. An effort is being made te discover the perpetrators, but thus far it is unsuccessful. While a boy named Gauntz was cross ing a field lying east of Reckvillo near Harrisburg, he discovered the feet of a man sticking from beneath a quanity of brush. A closer examination revealed the fact that the man was dead. The lad at ence went for assistance and the dead man's condition was fully examined. The body was found te be considerably decom posed, and it was with difficulty that it could be handled. A bullet hole was found through the head, the ball having entered one of the eyes. Near the" body a revolver, partly leaded, was found, and it is supposed that the man committed suicide. The man was unknown. Three Supposed Swindlers. In Reading, three richly dressed stran gers visited the various banks. At the Farmers' bank they procured a draft for fifty dollars, made, payable te a party in New Yerk. Subsequently they came te the bank and had the draft made payable in Philadelphia. At the Second National bank they procured a draft for $26. Hew many ether drafts they procured is net known. They were shadowed at the va rious banks and sufficient was seen te war rant the police officers arresting two of them at the railroad station when they were about leaving. The third man was net apprehended. The prisoners refuse te give their names or any reference. They were given sepAate hearings and their stories widely differed. They were com. mitted for a further hearing until the drafts are heard from. There is a suspi cion that the drafts may have been raised. Wasting Accident. A terrible accident occurred about half past 12 o'clock yesterday at the extensive limestone quarries of Leinback & Brether at Cedar Hill, about five miles north of Reading, along the river in Bern town ship, by which two men, named Jehn Te bias, superintendent of the quarries, and an assistant, named Henry Binkley, were instantly killed. They were blasting and had made two blasts ; a third was being pieparcd, when a premature explosion took place, scattering the rock in alldi rcctiens, striking the two men ou the head. Their skulls were mashed te a jelly and the brains and bleed were scat tered in all parts of the quarry. There were a number of ether empleyes working a short distance from the unfortunate men, who immediately rushed te their as sistance, but when picked up life was ex tinct. Tobias was 37 years of age and leaves a wife and five children. He had been superintendent of these quarries for upward of nine years and was highly es teemed. Binkley was 30 years old and leaves a wife and two children in very d'es tilnii circumstances.
