LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCE TUESDAY- APRIL 25, 1882. AT THE PBISON. tiOllX L'KAKKirOKD'd BIG PETITION. A 1'lfat.aat-l.oeklnij Cigar i is story The Prison Wall. A rcpresfcutativc eC thelKTrxLiccxcEK, who called at the prison yesterday, was shown by Jehn Frankford hia case, as he has it prepared te Jay before the beard of pardons at the meeting of that body in May. It is probably the me3t elaborately devised presentation of an application which has-ever gene up from this county. The petition sets forth that he was con victed of stealing Reuben A. Baer's horse and harness and Biackblll'a horse, and (sentenced in all te 19 years in jail from eitcibi-r 22, 1877 ; that his confederate, Gibsen, who was mainly responsible for the ciimc, only get 8 years ; that Frank luiil lias lest one eye and the ether is ;eiug rapidly ; that his health is se im prtireil that he cannot live his term out, un2 4hat if restored te his family the peti tioners have confidence he will regain his manhood ; it is only asked, however, that his benteuce be commuted te the same length as Gibsen's, which would make Traukferd's expire in the fall of 1885 ever three years hence. The petition for Frankford's commuta tion, signed by residents of this city, Is 27 feet in length and has even 1,400 names en it. Anether from Strasbarg, from which neighborhood the DrackbUl horse was taken, has 123 names en it. Others liem dillcreut parts of the county will run the total up te nea:ly 2,000. Besides the petitions Frankford has a very large num ber of strong letters 'addressed te the lieanl of pardons from men of prominence ami inlluencc, including the officers and ux-eilicer.s of the piisen, physicians, min isters, lawyer.", merchants, and ether pi eminent citizens. President of Prison inspectors Ilagcu is very earnest in his petition te the beaid and in his letter hays : "The day may come in our cxpo cxpe cxpo licnee when we will be compelled te ask tha same been." Asa whole, the papers pieseiit a very forcible and urgent case ami c tu hardly fail te bring the answer. The Cigar Manufactory. IVankferd seems te be very popular in the piisen. among the officers and inmates, ami in (iiithcrxiucc el his purpese te get a reduction of his sentence and te aid in the ;uppeil ! hi lainily hu associates in the cigar (lep.titniciit have made up for him evci i0. There are sixteen men at work in the new cigar shop, under direction of the feiL-mau of Contractor Aldus C. Herr. The shop, built en the upper 3ide of the jail, is a very tasteful room, finished in hard weed, with light from skylight ami water at hand. There are two benches and ample room, light ami vcutilatieu : four hands sit en each .side of each bench and among these six teen are Frankford, llambright, Lippin Lippin cett, the IJuzzards, Uricker, Lentz and some ether well known convicts, and yet they :ue a oed looking, well disposed and intelligent set of men, and Mr. Herr says he could net want a better force. The best of lelatiens exist between them and a fowl r ghtllewcrs blooming at the windows give i iie room a cheerful appearance. Each man - allotted the task of making 1,000 ciga: s a week, and for all overwork the pn.vn; p.xys them 1.00 a 1,000 extra, and .Mr ileir pays them 50 cents premium for all go )k work and economy in the use of the ni.iteii.il. He pays the prison $1.65 per 1,000 for the convict labor. Se that an inlnstiiniis man can make clear for him--.ulf about $3.00 a week. The interior of the jail leeks fresh and clean and the grounds are being put into ; mil order. A short section of the wail :.l J lie comer has been plastered, raised and reefed as a sample of the manner in which it. is desired the whele should be linislird as recommended by the grand jury. The improvement as shown here appear te be practicable and necessary. m- Imminent parents vhe allow their children le isil hemtily of Mfjli-srasoned fed, rich pies, cake c. v, ill h:ive 1 1 use Hep Hitter's te pre vent iiulieslien, .sleepless 'ijhts, biekness, pain, ami. perhaps lcaih.
