A fire in the cigar box manufactory of Jacob Menkell, m Menree street, New Yerk, yesterday, caused a less of $10,000. The residence of Harry Upham, with nearly all of its contents, was destroyed by fire last evening at Yineland, N. J. Less, about $5,000. The fire at New Alexandria, Westmore land county, Fa., was get under control after raging ever seven hours. About one- third of the town is in ashes. An explosion has occurred in the Black Herso colliery, Sunderland. Seven per sons have been rescued. They were badly burned. Four bodies have been recovered. Thirty-five persons were killed. A detective belonging te Pinkerteu's force and disguised as a tramp, wandering about Mifflin, Schuylkill county, fell in with a young man named Elisha Kringle. The tramp accidentally speke of Gee. H. Warner, whose barn, with .all the cattle, was burned a short time age, and who has received uumereus threatening Mellie Maguire letters recently. In the ceurse of conversation Kringle told the tramp many things, which caused the detective te have him arrested en the charge of being the leader of the Mellie Maguire gang who have committed many depredations re cently, lie was terribly bewildered when he found the tramp was a detective. A very unpleasant account is given by a Brazilian paper of the proceedings of a huge water snake called the "sucuruyu," which is te be found in some of the rivers of Brazil. An accident occurred the ether day en the banks of the Rie Arassuahy, owing te the veracity of one of these rep tiles. A slave, with some companions, was fishing with a net in the river, when he was suddenly seized by a sucuruyu, and, in spiie of his resistance, was dragged under the water in the presence of the horrified -spectators. He never appeared again, and no doubt is entertained that he was swallowed by the sucuruyu, who made an effort with his hinder coils te carry off at the same time another of the fishing party, it is tue exception ler the sucuruyu te attack human beings ; but it loses no opportunity of seizing deer, calves, and ether quadrupeds when they come te drink. A negre girl about ten years of age, was Killed by a man named .Lewis Joyce, in whose house, near Floyd Court Heuse, Va., tshe has been living since the death of her mother. It appears that Joyce heard a nun or that a panther had been seen in the neighborhood of his residence, and en going te bed at night placed an axe by bis ueasHic ready ler use should the pantuer invade the premises. During the night he heard a noise in his room and jumping out of bed he seized the axe and struck at what he supposed was the panther. He was horrified en procuring a light te find that he had clelt the skull of the girl, who was the niece of his wife, killing her in stantly. She had been wandering through the heuse in her sleep.
