OX THE DEFENSIVE, SUIPBBRD BECOMING VEKV CAUPIUOS r i s The Democratic Investigator Pressing the Peruvian Contractor Hard He Re turns ErmslT vKepilea Defend ant as Welf a Witness. Washington, April 11. Representative Blount continued the cress examination of SfcipbenLtb day and Suipk'erd's' statement early in tbe investigation that he appeared before the committee in a dual capacity, j as witness ana defendant, was finally re alized. Witness was at once put upon the defensive and the palpable drift of the meraing's examination .was ,te bring out and define exactly, bow far the. witness bad gene in a direct attempt te influence the official action of Minister Hurlbut. Witness was asked if Senater Blair as cennsel was conferred with'1 in relation te the letter of Hurlbut In which Shipherd tendered him $250,010 of stock and re plied that Blair did net see the letter te Hurlbut. Witness, however, told him of it after.it was scut. Ttie counsel general ly disapproved of the letter, telling Ship herd it might get him into trouble. Te Blount's questions in relation te the letter sent te Arizola through Hurlbut he received nothing but evasive replies from witness. Mr. Belmont then took up the cress ex amination and his questions followed each ether in rapid succession and very seen developed the probability that the com mittee had extracted from the witness about all the information he proposed te give them. Mr. Belmont asked witness if his clients suffered any injury from the Peruvian government. Witness desired te answer tbe question at length in his own way, but Belmont insisted, declined and committee then went into secret session for ten min utes, at the conclusion of which witness proceeded te explain in bis own way that justice had net yet been denied them, but net knowing rhat ceurse the Peruvian government might pursue, he could net answer yes or no. After some further inquiry Shipherd asked te be excused;for the day, and com cem com mittce adjourned until to-mertow. THE star route casks. The Government Vigureii- Futhlue Them Despite the Obstructive Aleaaures or the Deteu?e. Washington, D. C, April 11. The Star Reute cases were resumed this morn ing, the question under consideration be ing the special plea of abatement made ly the defense. There was a full attendance. 1 Cel. Iugersell explained, in regard te Ir.s interview with Mr. r.er in i'liilauelpliip, that S. "W. Derscy would be en hand when wanted, and that all talk of cxtraditieu measures was foolish. Mr. Totten opened for the defense. The court ruled that the defense had no right te undertake an investigation of the pro ceedings of the grand jury,, and that the plea of abatement is net allowable. Mr. Totten gave notice that the defense would enter an exception, and also announced their intention te carry the cases before court in banc. Mr. Miner having pleaded "net guilty" yesterday, the defendants were called upon te plead, and refusing te de se, the court eidered a pica of net guilty te he uttered. Thursday, May 4, was then fixed by the court as the date for the trial of the eases. Cel. Ingersoll notified the prosecution that he would expect them te give a full bill of particulars at the time, describing all the papers claimed by them te be for geries. Mr. Mcriick said that te-morrow they would bring in au answer te the plea of abatement in Rerdcll's case and ask te have it disposed of. In this case Rcrdcll was net indicted under his full name. The trial was then adjourned. AFFHAV BK1WKEN NKGKOJiS. Twe of Them DUambene: a Companion. St. Leuis, April 11.
