1ANCASTER DAJLY JNTEIIIGENCER SATURDAY" 'APRIL 8, 1882. Haucastet Jntelligencer. SA.TUBDA.Y KVKNINQ. APRIL 8, 1882. EASTEK MORNING. Edith Fitzgerald in " Oar Continent." ' A velcclul silence nils the fleeting Night ; A neteless sons la quivering through the air; Tliu daughter of the sea-god, Silvery Dawn, . Callclh her scattered lerces te draw near. Responsive te the summons from the top Ot mounts and depths of vales, and from the sea, Itell clouds of fairest opal, pearl and (ray. Moving te sounds of shadowy minstrelsy. A flash ofcrimen bants from ent the East; Gathering her fleecy columns flies the Dawn, Alter the fleeing host el Night she flies, Leaving te conquering Hern the reddening skies, And Easter Day is born. On eaith the faithful have their watch been keeping Fer forty weary days and nights In sackcloth and in ashes ; bitter weeping Turn they away from this celestial light. They de net know-hew could they? that the glory .Shedding a golden light o'er land and sea, Is the reflection et the angels' story That CiiuiBT o'er Death has wen the victory. Tlits Easter bells, what means their joyous pealing? Yeu seem te draw it in with every breath ; What means this song angels and men are teirini:? ':.l King bslls! Sing people! Every glad-;etei-?- welling Is the death-knell of Death. Why Meetiar uiUa't Break. "Mai Adeler" In " Our Continent." It may net be known te the reader that Friends' meeting is dismissed when the worship is ever, by two aged Briends, whe tire known as the " Heads of Meeting," shaking bauds with each ether. In any Friends' meeting house en First day an observer may see the worshippers sit in perfect quietness excepting when there is a sermon or a prayer until one of the heads of the meeting extends his hand te the ether, who clasps it and shakes it. Then everybody gets up and gees home without a word of dismissal. But until the hand-shaking occurs no Friend would think of moving from his seat. A few Sundays age Elias Warner and Themas Brown sat as usual at the head of the Bennyberg meeting. The meeting had been in session about au hour and nobody had spoken. Elias had his head, bowed forward, resting upeu his cane. Themas' face .looked downward se that his bread brim hat hid it from view. Poeplo began te wonder why they did net shake hands and break meeting, and come, even of the old Friends who had been disciplined te patience by half a cen tury of meetings, became.a little restless and fidgety. Suddenly a faint snore came from the place where the heads of meeting sat. The worshippers looked up with surprise. The painful fact then appeared that Elias War ner was asleep. When Themas Brown hcai d t lie snore he looked calmly around and then put his head quietly back, with his I'oielieud en his hands, and his hands ou his cat:e. The Friends saw there was no hope of getting away until Elias should wake up, se they made up their minds, in their usual amiable fashion, te endure the wrong in peace. Se Elias slumbered and snored calmly along for about half an hour, when a fly that was promenading about en his nose happened te buzz into his nostril, where upon Elias suddenly awoke, sat up with a jerk, cleared his threat, and tried te leek as if he he had net been asleep at all. The meeting drew a long breath of re lief, and there was a little bustling move ment indicating that the Friends expected te no home at once. Elias Warner noticed the fact and he extended his hand te Themas Brown. Themas took no notice of it. The meet ing looked at the operation with intense anxiety. Just then, amidst the breathless silence another faint snore was heard ! It is painful te have te admit such a tliiuir, but the fact is Themas had dropped oil' into a gontle slumber while he was waiting for Elias te wake up. The meeting began te feel indignant. Seme of the old Friends scowled. Wil liam Benten leaned ever and suggested te Geerge Wat kins te get up and prod the sleeper with his umbrella, but Gaergo would rather have died than te de any thing se irregular. There wcre young and sinful Friends who thought of going out of the meeting without waiting for it te break, but they contented themselves by coughing loudly and shuffling their feet. But Themas went swimming along in placid peace through the land of dreams, and his snore grew louder and louder until it vibrated like a miniature fog-hein through the room. The Friends whese-diuners were getting cold at home were growing excited. Sup pose Themas should sleep for an hour ? Suppose before he woke Elias Warner should drop off for another sneeze ? The situation began te grew serious. Even Elias himself felt a little perturbation, and some observers thought they detected in him a movement te scourge Themas with his elbow. But he didn't. lie remained quiet, trying te appear as if he were wrapped in the most solemn meditation. Thus half an hour or mere passed, the Friends meanwhile getting madder and madder. Suddenly Themas Brown was heard te laugh in his sleep. Then he exclaimed : " Hannah, why don't thee get the pie?" Theu bis eyes opened, and as the wicked boys in the meeting laughed he sat up, blushed crimson, grasped Elias Warner's hand hurriedly and sailed swiftly out of the meeting te hide his confusion. The managers of Bennyberg meeting intcud te reorganize en a Basis that will put younger men at the head of the meet ing after this. Household Market. DAIRT.
