LANCASTER DAILY 1NTELLI0BNCER pttDA Y. APRIL 7 1882. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE, KKO.-VI TUK TKRRIBLE TO TIIK RIDIC ULOUS. A Hue. Vv be l'lepg Over a Bridse aud Don't Die. Jehn Scbmitt, a Germau aged 34 years, attempted te commit suicide by jumping from the top of Witmer's bridge into the Cocestega creek, this morning between 9 and 10 o'clock. He jumped from the top of the wall, at a point nearest te the west end aud wiicic it is between 30 aud 40 feeL above the water. He lauded in about two feet of water aud then crawled te the sliei-c, where he was found. He was unable te walk as he had no use whatever of his legs. He was hauled te the county hospital where Dr. G. 11. Welchaus attend cd him, upon examination it was found that the man had his back and legs injured, although no bones were broken. VVheu our reporter saw him he waa lying at the hospital and although he was endurinir some pain he seemed te be comfortable. Schmitt landed in this country in 1871, and of lata he has been tramping around the country. Fifteen days age he was committed te prison, probably. for drunk drunk eucss, altheugh he says he had himself sent out te get out of the cold. This morning he walked out te the bridge and he says, as he has been greatly troubled of late, he concluded te put an end te his life by jumping ever the bridge. When he touched the water, however, he quickly "pulled for the shore" and did net give himself much time te pass away from this sunny clime. When Schmitt was asked hew high it was at the place where he jumped, he said : "Well I found when I lauded that it was higher than I supposed it was whi'ii I stinted from the top." The man told several persons that he was tired of living and he no doubt thought he could die easily in that way. When he found that the witter was net deep and that he bad received a wetting, he probably came te his senses and thought better of this world. OUIl'VAKV. Sudden Dentil et u Prendilng Yeung Man. " Prayer of Love " is what the Lancas ter papers write about new. It appears that one of the editors, in his early days, wrote a book with the above title. Of course there is nothing wrong about this, as an editor has as much right te write a book as any ether individual, but it se happens that another editor of the same town objects, for the simple rcaseu (and we are net alraid te "risk" the statement) that he couldn't write a book as he knows nothing about " prayer and love."
