Masen's apologists, attempting te make shelter for him behind the skirts of a woman And a baby, are begging the whole question. The one redeeming fea ture of the Guiteau trial was the patience which the American publie, well assured of " the crime and burning with righteous indignation, bore towards the miserable wretch, the safety which they assured te him in the name of the law, precisely as an innocent man is sheltered until charges against him are disproved. The strength which en ables the public te guarrantee even this foul mouthed wretch the fullest freedom of trial and safe conduct until justice was declared, and was a high test of American character. The petitions for Masen's re lease have been throwing all this away. Masen had no mere provocation, no mere indignation, no inore wrong te avenge than any spectator in tlie crowded court room. Yet no spectator filed at Guiteau, and yet no spectator was bound as Masen was, by his military loyalty and his orders en guard te keep the prisoner sccuie. Unless every policeman en his beat, and every prison keeper aud soldier en guard duty is to.be warranted, new and hereafter, in law-breaking violence upon prisoners in charge. Sergeant Masen, like any ether man who takes the law into his own hands. should suffer the penalty of his defiance of orders and treachery te his trust. Other offenders have wives and babies, tee. but these are net arguments though they may uetn nave help ana pity or a high-minded people. Concerning Fish. The opening of the trout season was formally celebrated en Saturday in" New Yerk by a trout exhibition at Fulton Market. There were trout of all varieties form Rhede Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Wisconsin, New Yerk, Canada, England and Scotland and ether places. The exhibition was largely attended during the day. The Marietta Times, commenting en a suggestion of the Recerd that farmers should pay mere attention te fish culture, says " thcre are hundreds of farmers in this 6tate engaged in that business new. In this section many who have a pond or a stream of any size running through their farms have made application te the state fishery commission, near this place, and obtained a number of trout, carp or bass, aud stocked their streams or ponds. In most cases they have been successful, es pecially with carp, and in a tow years they will depend upon fish for a subsistence as much as upon any ether farm produce." Easily Freveh.
