LANCASTER DAILY I VfELLIGENCEK MN1SDAJ. APRIL 3, 1882. THE TOBACCO MARKET. KKD LEAF AMD HAVANA. Fer the Week Hading Saturday, April 1, lO A. M. United States Tobacco Journal. Though Otere was a much improved in quiry for suitable stock during the week, business is still lagging. Manufae turers are in a mess" of trouble. The tax question is still in a state of uncertainty ; tbe system of a tenement beuse cigar maa facture will probably be stepped by law ; imported tobacco may be allowed te oerae in free of duty, and tbe Seuth is just new a very peer field for enterprises of any kind. Consequently, tbe manufacturing of cigars is being carried en in an osten tatious way. All these drawbacks did net exist last year, and nevertheless, manufac turers remainad without much business till the middle of April. The consumption of cigars certainly has net decreased, and vc venture te say that without the just named causes business would be quite brisk. The quietness has new lasted nearly three months. Jobbers certainly must have a greatly reduced stock en band, and orders will and must come in very shortly. The settlement of the tax and ether disturbing questions is quite near, se that we may leek forward te a speedy revival of the cigar business. The natural consequence will be a stimulated market and goods of all kinds will move freely. Though we advise holders of old and fine goods net te be tee stiff in their prices and bell at reasonable offers, holders of new and line goods may rest assured that an open and profitable market is in store for them. The stock of old leaf in our market is gradually decreasing. Pennsylvania, at from 12 te 19 cents, sells easily, while the figures asked for fine ruuning, . 32 te 24 cents, are frightening prospective buyers and cause them te purchase in very limited quantities only. Connecticut moves also in small parcels only, and at no higher nor lower figures than these that ruled last fall. Several attempts have again been made during the past two weeks te excite the market en New Yerk state tobaccos, but owing te the clumsiness and the asinine behavior of the instigator, the at tempts proved a ridiculous failure. Ohie is much in demand by manufacturers of cheap cigars, and sales are effected with case. There is very little- Wisconsin in the market, and offerings meet with eager takers. The sales of the week were as fellows : Pennsylvania Crep 'SO, 500 cases; 12 te 19 cents for low and medium running. Connecticut Crep '80. 250 cases ; seme becends at 12 te 18 cents, balance wrap pers at 27 te 45 cents. New Yerk Btate Crep '80, 100 cabes en private terms. Ohie Crep '80, 5G0 cases, 4 te 10 cents. Total 1,200 cases. Lesses byJnre. The Eleanora Springs hotel, at Hays ville, twelve miles from Pittsburgh, the property of D. H. Toemoy, of Pittsburgh, has been totally destroyed by fire. The building was a handsome frame structure, containing one hundred and fifty rooms, and, with tbe furniture, was' valued at $138,000. Fortunately there were no boarders in the hotel wheu the fire oc curred, as the season had net yet com menced. The origin of the fire is believed te have been incendiary, as flames were discovered in three different portions of the heuse at once. The less is partially covered by insurance. A lad employed by the Philadelphia sewing machine company, which occupies the second and a portion of the third fleer of the leugh-cast thrco-stericd building at the northwest corner of Thirteenth and Buttonwood streets, while building a fire in a stove in the japauning room en the second fleer, poured seme of. the japan in the stove te hasten the progress of the flames. Seme of the burning liquid fell te the fleer and iu a few minutes the en tire building was iu llamcs. The company employs thirty-three men, who were barely able te cscape with their lives se rapidly did the flames spread. The entire stock aud machinciy were destroyed, the less amounting te 20.000. The. hewing machine company was insured for $9,500 Easily Proves.
