er.ttftjaflOK2 LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER WEDNESDAY. FEBRU ARY 22, 1882. Hancastei Intelttecncer, WEDNESDAY EVENING, FEB. 22, 1882. A rsliert Crej of Lumber. Tim Nertnwest Lumbermen In Trouble Kc cause of tlie Open "Winter. Iu St. Paul there is serious concern lest the partial wheat failure of last summer is te be followed by a failure of the great winter crop of the Northwest pine lum ber. The open winter and lack of snow ha;; made it difficult te get legs out iu the weeds te the banks of the streams, and the warm weather of last week has made such imperfect reads as were constructed impassable. The Mississippi Valley lum bermen en Saturday declared that a very beiieus deficit in legs must be expected. Spucial dispatches te the Pioneer Press from the various pineries of Minue 60ta and Wisconsin de net show any material change- in the situation. The hiiew fall el Friday was general in Minnesota, and will prore beueiicial te the lumbermen en the St. Croix, Hum, mil Sr Leuis rivers, and the little streams in northern Wisconsin if the weather re mains cold, and many camps that were en the point of being broken up will be con tinued and the work of hauling pushed te the utmost. On the Chippewa, at Eau Claire, Wis., and Black river, however, the old conditions obtain, the snow being quickly followed by a warm rain, which seen obliterated all hopes of geed reads for hauling. Most of the camps will be abaudeued unless a cold snap fellows, and already many men have been with drawn from the work. Estimates of the winter's work range from 10 te GO per cent, of the amount counted en at the beginning of the season. It is estimated that about ene-thiul of the lumbermen have come out of the St. Croix pineries and about the same number from the Hum liver. The continuance of work in the legging districts will be decided within the next 48 hours. A Stillwater despatch says that although little news regarding the extent of the present snow-storm has been received, the fact that the weather .has become cold and that snow has fallen gives lumbermen eu eu ceuragement te held out for a while longer. The crop has been reduced very materially by the prolonged warm weather and ab sence of snow, estimates of the shortage varying from 23 te 50 per cent. An Eau Claire special says : " Should the rain-fall we are having this evening extend te the uppar camps there will bi a general exodus from the weeds te-morrow which will leave contractors iu the lurch, and probably a shortage et' legs for the Chippewa Valley mills the coming sea son." A Dulutli special says : " The amount of snow that has fallen is very great ; in deed, it is the heaviest fall of this winter, and if it be followed by cold weather the lumbermen think they can make up during the next mouth for the time lest." A Confederate Tribute te (Jarlleld. On the death of President Garfield the cx-Confederate soldiers of Cincinnati passed a scries of resolutions, which were tclegiaphed ever the country and widely commented upon because of the excellent spirit which they displayed. Mr. B. F. Kuipe, of the First Maryland Confederate legimeut, at present a marble cutter, of fered te frame the resolutions iuTcnncsste marbie and the work has just been finished aud will be en exhibition until a special committee of the ex-Confederate association, escorted by representatives of the Union Array of the Potomac society, will go te Cleveland aud present the reso lutions iu person te Mrs. Garfield en Wed nesday, the 22d of February. The frame is of red variegated Tennessee marblf, highly finished.' It is 2 feet 5 inches high by 2 feet 1 inch wide, and was cut from a solid piece of marble. In each corner is the coat of arms of ihe United States in Mexican onyx, and the resolutions, hand somely engrossed 0:1 parchment, are pro tected by heavy beveled French plate glass. Tlie whole work is iu exceedingly geed taste, 'and there will be few tokens of esteem for the dead statesman and presi dent that will equal it either in design or sentiment.
