LANCASTER DAILY hTELLI6ENXJKR SATURDAY. JANUARY 28, 1882. Eanrastct friiclUfienrer SATURDAY EVENING, JAN. 28, 1882. LITTLE PHIL. The lollewlng poem, contributed te tlie Bosten Transcript, was suggested by a tender, pathetic sketch !n4he Detroit Free Fress.l ' Make me a headboard, mister, smoothed and planed ; you see Our ina she died last winter, and sister and Jack and me Last Sunday could hardly find her, se many new graves about. And Cud cried out, 4 We've let her,' when Jack gave a little shout. We have worked and saved all winter been hungry sometimes, I own But we Md this much from lather under thu old deer stone, tics never tees there te mjc her ; lie haled hei ; scolded Jack, When he heard us talking ubeut her and wishing fche'd come back. Hut up in the garret we whisper, and have a geed time te cry, Our beautiful mother, who kissed us and wasn't afraU te die, l'ut en it 'that she was forty. In November she went away; That she tens the best of mothers, and we haven't forget te pray ; And we mean te de as she taught us be loving and true anil square, Te work and read, te love her, till we go te her up there. Let the beard be while like nielhei" (U;e smul1 chin julvcred here), And the lad coughed something under, and conquered a rebel tear. " Here- i. all we could keep from lather, a dol lar and thirty cents. The rest he bus get for coat and flour, and partly ti p-iy the rents." Mushing the while- lie ever, and dropping the honest eye.-, "Whatisthe prica et headboard, with writ ing and handsome size?" 'Thice dollars!" a young roe wounded jut falls with a me'.ui, an 1 he. With a f.iee like the gheit .t his mother, sank duwn en his tattered knee. 'Three dollars! and we shall lese hcr.ne.it winter the graves and the snow !" But the boss had his arms about him, and euildled the head et tow Clese up te the great heart's .shelter, and womanly tears lei I last ' Dear boy, you shall never le-u her.O i ling te your sacred past ! Come to-irerrow, and bring your sister and Jack, and the beard shall l.e The bet thai the shop can turnlsh, then conic here ami live with me." f When the orphan- leaded their trca-urcen the rugged old cart next Iay, The surprine of a footboard varnish, with all that their love could -.ay : And " j:lith fit. Jehn, Our Mether f" baby Jack gave his little .shout, And Bud, like a mountain daisy, went dancing her dell about, Bui I'iill grew while and trembled, and cleie te the boss he crept. Kissing him like :i woman, shivered, ami laughed, and wept ; De you think, my benelacler, in heaven, that .'! be gladV" " Net as glad as you are, Philip, but llnl-di tlii- Jeb my lad." Mrs. IMvii Rivh. Siiit'idp. Savages rarely commit suicide ; the de de gire for sel (annihilation is tha product of our higher civilization. People are also mere anxious te shutlla oil the mortal coil in northern than in southern latitudes, mere in summer than in winter, mere in cities than in rural districts, mere among the educated than the illiterate, mere among wet king people than profe ssional men, aud mere among the peer than the well to-de. The Danes are the most and the Portuguese the least sell" de structive, the Prussiaus mere than the French, the French meru than the Eng lish, and the English mere than the Aus trian s, Russians, Italians or Spanish. Apart from latitude, climate has no effect The seasons, however, exert an im portant influence. Most people pre ler te take themselves off in line weather. Spring aud summer are the favorite t'nus. July offers te the vie tim the most and November the fewest attractions. The uumher of suicides is twice as great in May, June or July, as in any winter mouth. That women, mere than men, should shun death by their own hand, and should make up but a fourth of the ill-starred list is but natural and proper. Xer is it strange that convicts and prostitutes, who knew neither shame nor fear, de net die voluntary deaths in any appreciable ratio. But why should the tendency te self-slaughter increase steadily and surely with advancing years, and old age rather than early life become the suicidal period '.' Fer this strange fact appears te be established by statistics and that in proportion te the number of indi viduals of each age suicides arc about as frequent above three score aud-ten as betweeu the ages of twenty aud forty. The favorite methods of death are hanging and drowning, poisoning and the knife hav ing gene out of fashion. Rules of Conduct. Adhere most scrupulously te truth, aud labor te preserve the strictest integrity, simplicity and sincerity. Strive te be as kind, Cot bearing aud for giving as you can both te friends and fees. Never (speak evil of any one en any pre tence whatever. Strive te recommend religion by the courtesy, civility, and condescending char acter of your conduct. Mortify Iuts, sensuality and sloth. Shut out evi! imaginations and angry thoughts. HOUSEHOLD MAKK1CT. There Is nothing special te note In the markets te-day. He is a Methodist, ami then, as new S reached at times, and in his discourses elten eclalnied earnestly against all kimlsofstreng drink. When advised te trv Reieart's Old Brandy, In his case, he looked up with astentsumeni but after hearing et its wendcrtiil ellects in the cases of some of his near acquaintances, he at last consented te lollew our advice. He used the Brandy faithfully and steadily; the lirstbottle giving him an appetite, and betere the second was taken he was a sennd inan.v.-ith a stomach capable of digestingany thing whic-I: heichese te eat.
