Christmas was celebrated at Quarry ville by the inhabitants in a very suitable manner. In the evening a special Christ mas service by the congregation and Sunday-school was held in the Reformed church. The room was decorated with evergreens, etc., and prominent among them were two very pretty wreaths of white llewcrs made by Jehn Sitter. In one corner steed a Christmas tree about 20 feet high. It was covered withnice things including 127 stockings full of candy. The services consisted of the leading of sjiipture lessens, repeating of the Creed, hinging and an address by Rev. D. B. Shuey, the pastor. After the services were concluded L. T. Ilcnsel stepped forward,, and in a few well chosen remarks, pre sented G. J. P. Raub, the leader of the choir, with an elegant baton, which is made of ebony and tipped en the ends with geld, the head bearing the inscrip tien, "U. J. 1. Kaitb, Irem his friends, Christmas, 1881." "Jliss Eliza A. Kendig, a prominent teacher in the Sunday-school, was presented with a year's subscription te the Messenger, the paper of the church, and G. "W. Ilcnsel made the presentation speech. Mr. Shuey replied for both Miss Kendig and Mr. Raub, who were com pletely surprised. The church was ci ewded and the services were very inter esting ; a social collection was" taken up and a large sum realized for the orphans at Womelsdorf. MOUNT JOY NEWS Iliidjict "I" lloreugli Hems. Chiislmas passed off with the usual fes tivities at this place. The Sunday schools had their Christmas exercises and the childien were remembered in the shape of piesents. The streets were lively en Sat urday night, and the shop-keepers were busy disposing of their wares. What was impossible for Sunday took place en the following days. On Christinas morning Mrs. Susanna Landis, mother of our townsman A. B. Landis, ded at his residence, East Main street, in her 83th year. Her funeral will take place at her son's residence en Wed nesday morning at 10 o'clock ; burial at Landis Valley. A fair for the benefit of the Catholic church, which was commence 1 ou Satur day evening is new holding in their chapel, New Haven street. The band will lie present ou different occasions. Ou Friday night or early en Saturday morning, thieves entered the residence of Mr. Mai tin S. Bewman, Marietta street. They s-cctircd a dressed turkey, a line ovciceat, a ladies' cloak and numerous ether articles. A sheeting match at glass balls, an nounced te come off ou Monday afternoon, was postponed en account of the inclement weather. IT. K. Nissley, of Lewisburg University, C. E. Geyer, of the Lebanon Valley col lege, Henry Barnliarr, of Lancaster, Al. Lcib, of Philadelphia, all Mount .ley boys, spent Christmas in the borough. gap item?. On the Side of tlie fllliie llidge. The protracted meeting held by the 31. E. association, came te a clese en Sunday evening last. It was a comparative failuic as but few were converted. The Gilbert family (colored) will give one of their concerts in the 31. E. church en Friday evening. The proceeds arc for the church. On 3Ienday evening last a dance was held in the hall by a company of young folks from the Nickel Mines. Everything passed off quietly, much te the credit of the participants. The Pennsylvania railroad company made a geed move when they gave orders te their agent at this place, 3Ir. Gee. W. Oreuderf, te prohibit all leafing and lounging in and around the station. Mr. Oreuderf is carrying the company's rules out te the letter, and has hung a large giceu placard prohibiting leafing in front of the station, which is very obnoxious te the eyes of the old loafers, who used te continually lounge around the passenger room. Christmas passed off quietly as usual. In the latter part of last week there was a gcncial iullux of students from the differ ent normal schools here, who were coming home te spend a " merry Christmas and a hrppyNcw Year." Among them were 3Ii.-i.scs Sue Walker, Anna 31. Wise, Messrs. Wm. and Jehn Hendersen, James V. 3Iaxwcll, Isaac B. Swcigcrt, I. Lewis Walker, Thes. G. Wise and Heward Rca. The fiiends of 3Iiss Sue Walker gave her a pleasant surprise en Friday evening, and en Saturday evening the yeuuir friends of Isaac B. Swcigcrt gave him a pleasant surprise at his father's residence. On Friday merniug J. C. Walker & Sen, the well-known grain and lumber merchants, presented each of their cm. pleyces with a fine large tin key for Christmas. The Christmas festival held at Christi ana closed en 3Ienday evening, bing a success. Jas. Whiteside get the fine wolf robe that was chanced off. HART ITEMS. In niwl Around Geerge town. The most noted incident of this section forsemo time past, was the marriage of R. S. 3IcClure te Miss Lillie 3Iartin, both of this township, en Thursday the 22d inst. 3Ir. 3IcClure is the only son of Jeseph 3IcClurc, president of the First national bank of Strasburg, 3!iss 3Iartiu is the eldest daughter of Dr. Jehn Martin. The ceremony was performed by the Revs. Cairns and Andersen, the ferire.' pastor of the 3Iiddle Octoraro Presbytcriau and the latter of the Octoraro U. P. congregation. About 80 invitations were issued by Dr. Martin and responded te by nearly all. The presents weie a liberal display of .silver ware, linens and ether articles of use and beauty. In spite of the gloomy and disagreeable day all present wcie in fine spit its and enjoyed themselves, as is be coming en such occasions. The table was an array of sweetmeats, tropical nuts and fruits, and the indispensable reait turkey. The bride and groom in their attire Bnovred their goad tastes by both being plainly but richly attired, the bride being arrayed in. a rich plum colored silk and parlor trail, and but little ornament. The bridal party imme diately after partaking of refreshments started for the railroad, where the bride and bridegroom took the train for Wash ingten, D. C. The party consisted of 3Ir. Thes. 3IcClure and 3Iiss Lizzie- Martin, both of Bart ; Dr. Black, of Strasburg, and 3Iiss Alma Leck, of New Jersey ; 3lr. E. Tewnscnd, of Smyrna, and 3Iiss Smaling, of Lancaster ; 3Ir. W. Snead and 3Iiss 3Iaggie Hughes, both of Bart. Old beets and shoes were thrown after them with out stint and heartfelt wishes for their safe return and long and happy wedded bliss. Christmas. Our village is never a very lively one en Christmas, but this Christmas Day was net celebrated in any of the four churches, except the Episcopal church at Gap Nickel 3Iines, and, consequently, it passed off without any evidence of the fact that the 23th of December was mere than any ether day. Anether Wedding. 3Ir. 3Iartin Strump, of Eden township, te 3Iiss Ada Girvin of Bart, at the par sonage of the 31iddle Octoraro church by the pastor. Rev. Cairns, en the evening of 22d inst. Ne cards. Tobacco. Ne particular life is apparent in the to bacco trade in this vicinity as yet. The raisers are busily at work stripping out their crops, and they find it considerably mere troublesome te get properly asserted en account of the damage done by hail. The tobacco is of an excellent quality but will net turn out as many wrappers as the same acreage heretofore. 3Iartin & Fritz have received the following lets : Arua ziah Hempsher, 1G, 3, 3 fGabiiel Russell, 15, 5, 3 ; William Hagans, 17, 7V, 3. All small lets. "AT UELLElfS." Christmas Evening in Salem Reformed Church. Salem (Heller's) church, in Upper Lea cock township, was filled te the extent of its seating capacity en Christmas evening, te witness the anniversary exercises of the Sunday school in connection with the church. That part of the church about the pulpit was beautifully decorated with evergreen festoons, a white cress en the altar, en each side of the pulpit were calla lilies with buds, while in a panel back of it was a monogram of the letters " I. II. S." in gilt. In an arch ever the pulpit was the inscription, " Jey te the World ! The Lord is Come," making altogether a pleasing effect. The exercises were opened by "Jey te the World, &c," by the choir, Misses Sallie Kcnnard and Emma Stelfy singing the duet. After further singing by the school of the "Christinas Carel," 'Christmas Hosanna," and Scripture read ing, Rev. D. W. Gerhard, pastor, made some remarks at length very appropriate te the occasion, which were followed by "Awake, Arise, &c," by the school. The report then read by the superin tendent showed the school te be in a flour ishing condition. "Jesus Cemes" was next sung by the school, followed by an address by Mr. Massataka Yamauaka, a Japanese student of Franklin and Mar shall college. 3Ir. Yemanaka, after giving the geographical position and extent of his native country, described very nicely the advantages, government, costumes and religion of the land he loves se well, and hopes that his countrymen may seen all embrace the Christian religion ; en a whole he proved himself te be an earnest and well informed young man. His remarks were listened te with marked attention and interest. " 3Iis 3Iis sienary Hymn" was then sung, after which a collection amounting te about $17 was taken up in behalf the orphans' home at Womelsdorf, Pa. During the lifting of the collection the congregation sang very heartily, ' ' All Hail the Power of Jesus' NamC." Among the pleasant features of the evening was the presentation of a purse centaing a geed sum of money te the organist, Miss Lizzie Weidler. The Superintendent, R. 31. Busheug, was also made the recipient of a handsome photo graph album by the school. The exercises were closed by the doxology, "Praise Ged, etc.," and benediction by the pastor. UKUMOItK DOINGS. Our Down Country Correspondence, 3Ir. Jeseph 3Iewery, of Philadelphia, recently married 3Iiss Grace 3Iorrisen, formerly of this township, and were given a most pleasant dinner at the residence of the bride's father, 31 r. Thes 31. 3Iorrisen, near Fulton Heuse. Others who entered the rapidly filling maniauc list last week, were Erastus Richie and 3Iannie Ewiug ; Wm. Hart and Emma Trimble, and Edward Greist and 3Iary Hammend. The boys and gals arc clean gene mad. At the entertainment by Chestnut Level church, given the children Christinas eve, the pastor, Rev. Jehn Galbrcath, was pre sented a very handsome geld watch by his congregation. It was a very suitable remembrance, and will no doubt always possess a value for the pastor far exceed ing its intrinsic worth.
