Dedication of the Adelaide Mills A Prom Prem ising Industry. The Adelaide silk mills, a branch of the Phoenix manufactering company, of Pat Pat ersen, N. J., was formally opened in Al Al lentewu yesterday. Upward of one hun dred gentlemen and ladies from New Yerk and Patcrsen, as well as a consid erable number from Philadelphia and ether parts of the state, joined with about two thousand of the leading citizens of Allentown in the nienics. It is of brick, four uteries high, and 275 feet long by 50 feet liread. The fust, second aud third lloers are de voted te the preparation and spinning of hilk, ami the fourth fleer is te be used as the weaving room. In this room opera tions en plain dies:; silks and ribbons will be commenced at the beginning of next year, ami when the works are in full eper atien employment will be afforded te COO Lands. At present about 250 girls and boys are given employment. Skilled spin ners and rcclers can make about $5 a week, and weavers can earn considerably mere. A substantial collation succeeded the in spection, aud following this speeches were made by Mayer Martin, of Allentown ; Albert Tilt, president of the Adelaide mills company, and several ethers. Mr. Tilt gave some interesting figures en the silk industry in this country. The value of silk goeds(linishcd) produced in the United Statce was as fellows' for the years indicated : 1850 te 18C0,Sll,000,O00 ; 1870, 12,OCO,000; 1874, $10,000,000; 1870, $-21,000,000; 1879, 830,000,000; 1880, 85,000,000. The percentage of silk goods made in the United States te the entire consumption here was as follews: In 1800. 13 per cent.; 1870, 23perctn; 1874,21 per cent.; 187C, 35 cr cent.; 1880, 30 per cent. The number of hands employed increased from 1,000 males and 3,000 females in 1800, te 9,000 males, 18,000 females and 5,000 youths iu 1880. Out of a population of 51,000 in Paterson, 15,000 new find employment iu silk mills of that city, and he prophesied a similar showing for Allentown a few years hence.
