The Assassin Creates the Customary "Scene." The District Attorneys Powerful and Affecting Speech. Secre tary Blaine Testitles. Washington, Nev. 17. The court room was tilled by 9:30 this morning, there being a noticeable increase in the number of ladies present. Immediately after the court opened Mr. Scevillc made a personal explanation, saying that there was no dis" aiireemcut between himself and Mr. Reb insen, and that the latter was rendering all the assistance possible. At this point Guiteau arose and ob jected te Kobinseu taking part iu the defense. He would manage his own case and would net trust Robinson, as the lat ter had no brains. He wished the court te understand this, aud if counsel were forced upon hira, he would make a noise about it te the country. He represented the feity iu this case, and wanted the com t te understand it. He said two or three bluudeibuss lawyers would lese the Citse for him, and he would net submit te it. The court informed him if he did net remain quiet he would be removed from the room. After a few minutes the pris oner hurst out a fresh aud then conversed in a very excited manner with his coun sel, striking the desk with his clenched list. At 10:I0 Secretary Blaine entered the room and sat behind the government counsel. A few minutes later District Attorney Corkhill made his opening ad dress. During the lirst part l erkhill's argu ment the prisoner were an air of iridiiler iridiiler ence and looked ever the morning papers. The speech was delivered in an impressive manner; aud when towards the close tears were falling from tha eyes of many, Guiteau laid his paper aside, leaned back in his chair and covered his eyes with his hand, evidently trying te conceal his emotion. He then com menced writing hurriedly ; he constantly shook his head iu approval or disapproval of Uerkhill's argument. One time he in terrupted the speech, but Judge Cox promptly announced that it was within the power of the court te try the ease in the absence of the prisoner, and if he per sisted in his turbulent remarks he would be removed. Guiteau said in reply, "I will net de it again your honor, but I have very deep feelings in this case." Laugh ter. Mi'Q. Scevillc, the prisoner's sister, cried bitteriy during the opening speech, aud her little girl, an interesting child of five years, could be seen appealing iu an alfeetioiiate manner and impuriticr, " Mamma, mamma, what is the matter '.'" Iflaluc en the Witness Stand. Leng applause greeted the termination of the speech. Secretary Blaine was then called te the witness stand. lie t est i lied that en the morning of the sheeting he accompanied the kite president te the dep.it ; he heard a pistol shot, followed almost immediately by another. Think ing sheie was some trouble, he touched the president, te urge him te go faster, hut at that moment the latter threw up his arms, exclaiming, " My Ged, what is this !" The faecrctary further testified te the subsequent events. Mr. Blaine in his cros.s-cxamiuntien de tailed the sheeting aud pointed out the location en a diagram, and when he left the stand the court took a half hour's recess. At this point Guiteau remonstrated with Scevillc, haying the latter must com ply with his wishes ; if net there would be a big row. Scevillc paid no attention te his client, aud the latter was with much difficulty removed by a bailiff. Court reassembled at 1 o'clock, at which time t he l csideut minister of Venezuela was called te the stand, lie gave a description of the scene at the depot en the morning of the sheeting. The prisoner impressed him as wearing a leek of fear. In his cress-examination witness explained hew the prisoner were his hat. Mr. Scevillo placed Guiteau's hat upon his (Guiteau's) head, partly en the side. Witness stepped counsel, saying, "That is the way he were his hat." Guiteau said " That is false, I worn my hat this way," placing it en his head perfectly straight. He added, " I wear my hat this way and de net go .sneaking around." Mrs. Sarah 15. White, inateu of the II. & I'. depot ladies' waiting room, was next called. She explained the circum stances el the sheeting in detail, subse quently as published.
