LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1881. OFFICIAL RETURNS OF THE GENERAL ELECTION FOR LANCASTER COTJNTYNOYEMBER 8, 1881. HI W ' i :' ;i et a: st a Lancaster Intelligencer, SATURDAY EVENING, NOV. 12, 1881. Seasonable Bints. bometblee About Heuse-Cleaning. These housewives whose house-cleaning has been kept in abeyance, waiting fur the last fly of summer te come and go, will doubtless rejoice that the frosts have come at last, though they demolish the little remnant of floral brightness left in our gardens, and metamorphose, as by the hand of magic, the cheerful summer land scape into sembre autumn scenes. I like te have as much as possible of this branch of household labor Accomplished in the spring, particularly the mere tedious por tions, like painting, whitewashing or papering. Then the days, instead et grow ing sheiter and colder, are continually gaining in balmy airs ana pleasant sun shine, and if things are net exactly "ship- shane docs net matter se much. Sometimes, however, unless one has screens that effect ually exclude the troublesome fly, these things, or some of them, have te be gene ever again in the fall ; or if net, there is still always enough te demand our time and thought te get our houses in order and well settled for the winter. There aic certain portions of house heuse cleauiug which it is mere desirable te de in the fall. Among these are the fillings of beds and the taking up and putting down of carpets, while straw is dry and sweet : besides, with these carpets net in common u.'O, we thus make sure of doing away with moths and ether carpet-eatiug creatines that might otherwise de much damage. Kitchen walls that require whitewashing t-heuld lirst be brushed very thoroughly with a stiff broom, te get oil' as much as possible of the old white wash and smoke. Painted walls should be washed iu soft, warm water.er if very diity a net tee stie Jg suds may be used, but it must net be used tee het ; scarcely mere than lukewarm. If large, soft cloths are used (old flannel is best), and one is pro vided with convenient scaffolding te stand upon, and which is also easy te move about from place te place, she can go ever the walls or a room in a very short time, though net always without an uncomfort able after-reminder iu lame bheulders and a stiff neck. These who have papering te de will find it te their advautagc te make their paste of starch instead of flour. It should net be tee stiff, nor must it be usad till cold. But it costs mere," says one. It does, perhaps, a few cents; but it will neverthe less pay in the better appcarance of your room, which w ill be free from thesa spots and discoleitions often caused by the paste strikiiii: through and starting the colors, which are, when they occur, se fatal te the beauty of the papered walls. - Uravcvard Insurance. Tlie Attorney Ucucral of the State About te uoclare War. The at terney general will ask the court of Dauphin county te issue writs of quo warrante for the dissolution of several in surance companies which have been doing business en the graveyard plan. One of these csui panics is the State Capital Mu tual AM association of Harrisburg, which has issued policies representing ever $15. 000,000 Miiee its incorporation last No vember. The attorney general claims that these companies have repeatedly violated the previsions of the law under which they were cicaicd. Should the charters of these companies be forfeited similar action will, doubtless, be taken with regard te the nearly two hundred companies of this character in the state. The following are the ones te be attacked te morrow : State Capital Mutual Aid association, of Har risburg ; Prudential Mutual Aid, of Har risburg ; Southern Pennsylvania Security, of Hanover, Yerk county ; Stcclteu Mu tual 1'clicf association, of Stcelten. That Old Stere. " The old corner," " the old tellable." " the geed old place" All right, friends, call it what yen please. Wc confess te seme pride in being "old" in seme respects. It was a pretty dark day, 21 years age, when we christened " Oak Halt.," and steed up te answer te the name. 21 years is long enough for a baby te grew te manhood, and for a small undertaking te grew into a great enterprise. 21 years age wc were our own buyer, bookkeeper, por ter and watchman ; and stuck te it until ethers came along te help, some of whom have been with u.i ever since. Te day the needed helpers are numbered by thousands, and our custom ers are almost beyond number and everywhere. Our store 21 years age was i( only that cubby-hole at the corner," hard ly large enough te turn around in. New you knew what it is. Truly we have grown old and "settled." We havn't any disposition te change from fixed prices, nor from fixed principles, the chief of which is guarding the interests of our customers. We keep te our plain old-fashioned Oak Hall buildings. They arc like old-fashioned silver, well-worn, but still solid and geed, better than seme newer. Wc held fast also te our old methods el serving our ctutemers, viz : with the largest assortments te select from, the very best for the money, n guarantee with every purchase, viz : the privilege of bringing back goods and taking the money again if they want te. The only new thing about the Oak Hall premises strained and over crowded by the ever-increasing business, is the new stock for the wiuter of 1881. AVn sold out almost te bare beards last winter. Nearly every thing is this season's cut and fashioning. New materials have been used, and new patterns te cut them by. Please accept this old-fashioned, hcaity invitation te leek iu upon us and thus find out if our old age and experience hasn't s-ervctl us well iu producing this stock. WANAMAKER & BROWN.
