rYffiT ' -ffF .l'IwifW.y.J.ijr LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCE!, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1881. Hancaster Intelliccncer. MONDAYJ EVENING. NOV. 7, 1881. TOBACCO MARKET. si:kd leaf ami Havana. MEDICAL for the Week Ending Saturday, November 5, lO A. H. United States Tobacco Journal. It lias become very quiet in our market aud very few are the transactions made. In the opinion of holders of all grades of 'SO tobaccos outside of the unfortunate 2Tew Yerk State Big Flats, the fate of the "80 crop is irrevocably settled. "They will have te buy what we have left at our figures," is the sentiment that pervades them. The present quietude does net give them any uneasiness ; what troubles them is the '81 crop. Most of them are waiting for farmers te put lower figures en their crops, claiming such te be a necessity before they invest These who have al ready invested in '81 crops are confident that pi ices will rather be higher than lower ; gi ewcrs who sec their neighbors realizing large figures for their crops can only be moved te accept less by some ex traordinary turn of the state of the mar ket. Ne such extraordinary event is pos sible for a lenu time te come. The cigar trade is .solid new ; it may slacken in ac tivity for a sheit while, but will resume again. There are no speculative motives worth speaking of in these enormous pur chases of cigars ; actual demaud by the consumer has brought about the great bus iness of the past nine months, aud actual demand will keep the cigar manufacturing industry equally busy for many months te come. That se2(l leaf tobacco of the '81 crop will net go any higher, though, is also ccr tain. Sumatra is, as we have said in many of our former icviews, putting a check en the demands of the giewcrs. Aud it is well that Mich is the case; with the bright prospect before us there is no telling te what height line seed leaf wrappers would lise, if it wcic net for the rapidly growing impoitatien of these Sumatra wrappers. It is, thcicfere, reasonable te say that while there exists nothing at present that would inllucncu a fall in prices in '81 tobac cos, no furtLcr rise in prices for that ciep will take place as long as it is in the hands of the growers. The business of the week we specify as fellows : Pennsylvania Crep '80 : 720 cases, fine tunning, 22 cents; medium, 10 te 18 cents ; low, 1 3 te 15 cents. Connecticut (hop 'SO : :150 cases ; wrappers, "0 te 45 cents. New Ye:k State Ciep "Se : 200 wises, p t. Ohie Crep "SO : 450 cases : 4 cents for fillers ; ninn'msr, S te 12 cents. Wisconsin Crep 'SO : 100 cases, p. t. Havana remains active ; sales 700 bales, mostly "SO stock. Pi ices linn. Galls' Repert. Sales of ccd leaf tobacco repotted by J. S. Cans' Sen & Ce.. tobacco brokers, Ne. 131 Water street, New Yerk, for week ending Nev. 7, 1S31 : 450 cases 18S0 Penusj Iv.mia, V2Qi 18c. ; 300 cases 1SS0 Xew England, wrappcis, 18(.30c.; 300 cases 1"M Ohie, 4(jr 13c.; 150 cases state, p. t.; KJj eases sundiies, 0(7i,10c.; total, 1,300 cases ; maiket vciy dull. hales ut Sccil J.cii! lu October. I.eat. October was a busy mouth in the seed market of this city, the sales amounting te 17,000 cases. Only iu June and Sep tember weie the sales larger than in the past mouth, since the opening of the pres ent year. Theio have been heavy trans fers of Xew England, Pennsylvania and New Yei k state leaf, these of the first named section exceeding all etherss sev erally ceiisidfied, though closely followed by thc of Pennsylvania. Pi ices have continued steady aud up te this date theic is no change in quotations. Operations in the country weic prose cuted tlnougheut the month, but only with a mere shadow el the vigor observ able ia September. Flying visits were made te all the producing districts of several producing states, but the quantity of 1S?1 tobacco pin chased bore but a slight icscmblauce te that secured the previous month. I'm chases made iu the country from this time forward are likely te be ellcctcd in the tegular course of business, instead of in the huiricd way in which they wcic made when the buying season opened. The total sales for the twelve months of 1SS0 wcic tt7,S57 cases, and in the ten menthes elapsed of 1S31 the sales have been 120,9(54 cases. With this aggregate already, it will be matter for surprise if the end of the year does net show a grand total of 150,000 cases sold. Complicated Uhejim.
