s LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1881. Lancaster Intelligencer. THURSDAY EVENING, NOV. 3, 1881. The Brave Uuekiails. A- Little Mere Light en Tliclr Geed Fight at Harrisonburg, Vu In IKlVi. le tlic Eiliter et tlic Press. The " War Reminiscences" occasion ally appearing in your paper from the pen of F. A. B." are read with interest by the old soldiers. The article en Sunday, Oc tober 30, is calculated te create a wrong impression in reference te the Bucktails. The writer gives, and General Bradley Jehnsen takes, great credit for the defeat of the Bucktails at Harrisonburg, Va., June 0, 18C2, by the 1st Maryland regi ment. In the engagement mentioned the Confederates had four regiments of infantry, supported by cavalry and artillery, while opposite te them was the ' Flying Brigade," com posed of the 1st Pennsylvania andjlst New Jersey cavalry, and four companies of the Bucktails, .under command of Lieutenant Ivane, the brigade being commanded by General Bayard. Our forces, after a spir ited engaged, were compelled te retire, but net before doing geed and efficient work. General Ashby was killed by a shot from Fred Helmes, a bucktail. Colonel Kane was wounded and taken prisoner. The four companies of Bucktails were detached May G, lb"G2, and did net return te the regiment until the latter patt of August. The regiment proper was with the Penn sylvania Reserves under the command of Majer Hey Stene. General Jehnsen cannot surely claim a very large feather for his cap in defeating four companies of the Bucktails, with bis 1st Maryland regi ment, backed by three ether regiments of infantry. If the 1 st Maryland received the charge of the four Bucktail companies "it broke and retreated behind the ether regi ments posted en the crest of the hill." The death of Ashby shows that the Vir ginians were in the fight, and no rcceid can be produced te show that mere infant ry than the detail from the Bucktail regi ment was there engaged, or in the neigh borhood. If General Kane happens te see this article he will corroborate it in every particular. He was a brave commander, and his Bucktails did net hesitate te fol fel low his lead. Had the entire regiment been present at Harrisonburg the authority te allow a captured Bucktail te be appended te the color stair of the 1st Maryland would never have been issued. If General John John Jehn eon has been laboring under a wrong im pression for the past li years it is time for him te knew the number of companies be did engage. The ether .sb. companies of the regiment never set feet in the Shenan doah Val'.ev. W. Have Guir.n. Celuuria, October 31, 1881. Tlic Small Farm in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania farmers have deservedly a high imputation, and it is of interest te learn the conclusion at which they have arrived w itli regard te the proper size of farms. In the Seuth a tract of less than a couple of bundled acres is thought te be scarcely deserving of the name of a farm, and is iti danger of being contemptuously rcfcried te as a "patch." But it is differ ent in Pennsylvania, wheie the intensive rather than the extensive plan of farming prevals. Fur facts illustrative of this it is sufficient te turn te the advertising columns of such a paper as, say. the Yerk PrCf,s, upon one p.ige of which thirteen farms, with b.trns, dwelling houses, out houses, etc., complete, are described as for sale, exclusive of lets net "improved" with dwellings. Of the tliii teen farms the largest is. one of 2!1 acres, which is equipped with every convenience of build ing, etc., such as a Virginian would ex pect only in an estate of a thousand acres. The next largest has 200 acres, bnt, as if the proprietor thought himself unable te cultivate se much land pretitably, there are, besides the owner's residence, two tenant houses. Thcse are the gicat farms. The rest range from 100 acres down through a declining scries of farms of 90, 71, 52, ?,?,, 21, 18, (two,) 8, 7 and 0 acres in extent, and the detached lets te be rented for fanning purposes are even smalicr. That geed lcsults may be ob tained f loin faiuis of these small size:; has been tee well proved toadmitef question. The wonder is that farmers of ether sec- tiens of the country who complain of want of capital de net dispose of part of their laud, and with the means thus obtained imitate the example which the Yeik farmer long age set them. It was a pretty dark day, 21 years age, when we christened "Oak Hall," and steed up te answer te the name. 21 years is long enough for a baby te grew te manhood, and for a small undertaking te grew into a great enterprise. 21 years age we were our own buyer, bookkeeper, por ter and watchman ; and stuck te it until ethers came along te help, some of whom have been with us ever since. Te day the needed helpers are numbered by thousands, and our custom ers are almost beyond number and everywhere. Our store 21 years age was "only that cubby-hole at the corner," hard ly large enough te turn around in. New you knew what it is. Truly we have grown old and "settled." We ha v n't any disposition te change from fixed prices, nor from fixed principles, the chief of which is guarding the interests of our customer. We keep te eurplaiu old-fashioned Oak Hall buildings. They arc like old-fashioned silver, well-worn, but still .solid and geed, better than some newer. We held fast also te our old methods of serving our customers, viz : with the largest assortments te select from, the very best for the money, a guarantee with every purchase, viz : the privilege of bringing back goods and taking the money again if they want te. The only new thing about the Oak Hall premises strained and over crowded by the ever-increasing business, is the new stock for the winter of 1881. We sold out almost te bare beards lest winter. Nearly every thing is this season's cut and fashioning. New materials have been used, and new patterns te cut them by. Please accept this old-fashioned, hcaity invitation te leek in upon us and thus find out if our old age and experience hasn't served us well in producing this stock. WANAMAKER & BROWN.
