The buDke men who operate between Philadelphia and New Yerk have been reaping a harvest of tote. The leader of the gang has in four instances represented himself as a nephew of Antheny J. Drezel 'or a member of the well-known banking house of which Mr. Drcxcl is the head. One of bis victims was Mr. Evan Randelph, unexperienced business man, whom he swindled out of $110. The second was Mr. Hazlchurst, a leading member of the Phil adelphia bar, whom he caught for $2,400. The third was Mr. J. A. J. Sheets, a pros perous lumber merchant, who lest $2,900 by his confidence iu the scoundrel. The fourth victim is no less a personage than theUeu. Geerge Sharswood, chief justice of the supreme court of Pennsylvania. In the latter case, however, the amount in volved was only $10. The story of this operation was given by him as fellows : -As I waB strolling up Broadway in New Yerk a well-dressed yeuug man 'ad dressed me bv some name net my own, which I de net recall, ami sccmeu both insulted and incredulous when I told him he was mistaken. He, however, apologet ically said that I bete a striking resem blance te the gentleman whom he supposed me te be, and that he would be grateful if I would tell him who I was. I gave him my name, and he left me with every mark of courtesy. 1 had net gene much further when another gentleman, youthful, well dressed, and of remarkably pleasing man ners, crossed the sidewalk toward me, and, extending his hand, addressed rae by name, and professed te be delighted te have met me. His face seemed net unfa miliar te mc, but I could net recall his name, and I suppesed my puzzled leek led him te relieve my mind, as lie said : Ah, I see yea don't remember me. I am F. A. Drexcl, jr. I have been abroad se long that you have lest sight of mc. I have been studying art in Paris, and re turned only last wcek.' He then asked many questions about the welfare of prominent Philadelphians, with whose names, occupations and social standing he seemed thoroughly familiar. II j also con versed very interestingly en art matters abroad, mentioning incidentally that he had been an extensive purchaser for the account el his uncles as well as himself. We walked up town, chatting thus pleas antly, and net a suspicion that my com panion was net what he represented him self te be entered my mind. At length he mentioned that he had just received a very expensive painting from Paris oue ler which Belmont's and Vandcrbilt's agent had bid against him, but which he had bought for 50,000 francs. It was a very 6tcep price, and I didn't knew hew father and Unde Teny will like it,' he said. lie then invited me te leek at his treasure, which, he said, was only a block or two away. Nothing was occupying mc particularly at that time, and I consented. Turning down oue of the cress streets we' came te a haudsome brown-sleno house, into which we culerc I after ringing the bell. While we steed en the steps my companion told mc that he had drawn the grand prize, 11,000 francs, in r. lottery dc- Biguea ler tuc ucneiic ei some rarisiau art the association, auu was uui numu;; in city for the money te come te hand, then would go te Philadelphia visit his relatives. The deer He and was aud that epeucd by a liveried porter, we were admitted te a saloon parlor seemed te have been turned into au office. Mr. Drexel introduced himself te the gen tlemanly individual who occupied the desk, and paid that he had brought me, mentioning mv name, te see his famous picture. The gentlemanly individual was sorry that the picture had just been sunt. te Philadelphia, and he bhewed Abe ex press receipt iu conlinnatieu. Apologizing for the disappointment, my companion made a move as though te go away, when the gentlemanly individual, after brief consultation of what seemed a book of entry, said : Mr. Drexel, I received the remittance of your grand prize, 11,000 francs, this morning. Here is the money.' and he counted out what becmed te be that ameuut. The geutleinauly in dividual then suggested that it would be well te take s;ome tiekets in another lot tery drawing for the benefit of seme ether art association. Dicxel was willing. He said he patronized such schemes for the benefit of art, and always turned his prizes ever te desctving artists. I had scruples against bucii methods, fcu' he insisted, and I handed him $10. Then they brought out a num bered chart, aud gambling implements. I saw at ence that the whole thing was a trick and device, and I iepe-503scd myself of the $10 which 1 iiad given my compan ion, and which was lying en the table and made my way out of the room without opposition. The pscude Drcxcl came along and agreed entirely with me in my estimate of the character of the place. I still had confidence in him, lesiug it only after suits had becu brought te recover money falsely se obtained." Judge Pierce, who has been en me common pleas bench of this ceuuty for twenty years, was another intended victim and the picture game was the same. While he did net suspect the nice yeuug man of dishonest purposes, he escaped by rcfusiug te view the painting, regarding the confi dence operator mcicly as an intelligent bore. Scar-Faced t'aarlcy. The LaTa Bed lrlenl Settles Devtii as n buc- ceraiel farmer. SL Leuis Pest-Dirpatch. Mr. D. 13. Dyer, of tbe Qaumpan Agency, Indian Territory, accompanied by Mr. Q. D. Williams, was in town te day. Mr. Dyer is well known as one of the most successful Indian agents iu the cm ploy of tbe eevcrnmeut, and his agency is one of the largest and best managed in the territory. "Hew arc your pets getting along ?" wc "Very well," lcplicd Mr. Dyer. "They are taking te civilized ways very rapidly, and are much mere tractable thau you would think. They all wear citizens' dress new, and aie the most industrious farmers you could imagine." " What tribes are stationed with you V" "The Quapaws, Pcerias, Miamis, Otto Otte ways, Wyaudettcs, Senecas, Shawnecs aud the remnaut of the once famed Modecs." " Hew many of the Modecs remain?" " About 100. They are quiet and docile, and are net at all like tin- fiends of the lava beds. Scar-Faced Charley, Captain Jack's old partner, is the chief new, and a better behaved old farmer could scarcely lc found. The last agent "removed him, hut I gave him his place again, and his people arc pleased. He lias settled down, and there is net a mere faithful Indian. " " Hew many acres of land have yen und;r cultivation altogether ? " " Nearly 10.000. Wc have 1,500 Indians altogether. The Modecs alone attend te 400 acreB. " " What in their condition ? " "Very satifllactery. We have three lay and two bearding schools, the latter accommodating 200 pupils. The teachers arc white ladies and gentlemen, but I have a few Indiant employed in that capacity. The old buck and squaws are very anx ious that their children should go te school, and they all appear te like te Jcarn. We have fiftecn'pelicemcn and the cemmuuity is just as orderly ac any country bottle ment Ne serious trouble lias occurred during the year, and nene need be fear ed." " Are Ui9 Indians still as mixed as they formerly were en the subject of marriage." "That's the chief trouble. They still have an idea that one wife is scarcely enough, and they cling te the old practice et putting away a wife when they grew tired of her. We are gradually stepping this. If this matter were corrected I should be rcadv te beast about them." Preparations Fer a Scandinavian Mar- riage. Jehn Habbcrten. in Harper's Magazine ter November. Preparations for a wedding feast begin weeks beforehand, and are se extensive that M. Du Chaillu was utterly amazed at the quantity of solids and liquids that he saw stored against au approaching mar riage feast. Invitations te weddings are sent out well in advance of the happy day se that the guests may prepare for two or three days' absence from home ; and the poorest person invited is never without a wedding garment. The happy couple eat, drink and dance with every body ; and. it seems never te have occurred te the people te inquire hew they de it. There is a limit te the endurance of the native head and stomach, and this generally is found en the third day ; then the guests, en bidding geed-by te the bride, tender their wedding presents, which always consist of money, and arc deposited, without being exam ined, in a box which the bride wears at Mde. Hew many American girls will wish only te themselves that a similar cus tom might prevail here can net easily be estimated, but all of them will understand why there arc but few bachelors in the laud of the midnight sun. Leng as arc the wedding festivities, these of Christ mass far exceed them, for feasting and fun arc industriously kept up from Christ mass cve te Twelfth-night, and quaint and charming arc seme of the attendant cere monies. m Can't Preach Geed.
