The ncaicst approach tc it is " La Bellc Jardiniere " Paiis en the Seine, hut any one visitiujj this stoic will say Oak Hall does hotter in quantity te .select from, style and make-up of goods, though the prices in the main arc cheaper in Paris; because of the cloths without duties, and the cheap labor of France. The people here, however, think our pi ices are quite low enough, considering all things. American Clothing outranks all ether throughout the world for ical gracefulness. W have here none of the narrow-breasted and centi acted shouldered coats that arc se universal abroad. Seme of the New Yerk Tailors who have opened branches in Paris arc among the most popular artist-tradesmen there, and aic well patronized. The Knglish and French open their eyes wide when told of the size of the Oak Hall Clothing Heuse and its vast sleck of ready goods for Men and IJejs. It is our purpose and hope always te have Philadelphia lead the re tail clothing trade and we are giving our best efforts te improve every year en our cutting, patterns and workmanship. The character of nia t dials wc mc is no longer an uncertain question. The people knew that we aie te be depended en for sound judgment (based en exper ienced) in the goods selected. This year enr fashions and finishing would wairant higher rates, but our prices arc as reasonable as ever. Sigurd, JOHN WANAMAKER, WANAMAKER & BROWN. Down the Hay On Historic Ground The Celebration Id Old Virginia. Special Correspondence et the Ixtelligexcer Your correspondent get the idea into his head that he would go down te Yorktown, and with long-pent up patriotism give a helping hand te the centcnuial celebra tion and commemoration of the surrender of the English forces under Lord Corn Cern wallis te our Washington. The comings of ideas te the above mentioned head aic "like angels' visits," and seen as the owner of the head finds ene has taken possession, he pays every, attention te it and fellows it light along ; te, impressed with the idea of going, he went, and saw and was conquered. He took the Havana, a most excellent steamer, at Baltimore, about five o'clock in the evening of Monday, the 17th insr., and steamed and splashed down the beau tiful waters of the Chesapeake, antl saw the suu go down, throwing back coquet tish sparkles en the white caps of the waves, and scintillating in the foam of the bread wake of the vessel ; he saw " The darkness Fa'l irem the wing of night,"' and enclose the vessel, hiding the shores, and testing en the water. When he saw all this, paitry with his mind's eye, he felt almost as if he were another Childe Hareld sailing away from his friends and fees and almost breathed with him ' My native land Geed night !" But he seen changed his mind about it, and concluded he would net personate the Childe in a geed night apostrophe, and be sides lacked a listening ' little page" te whom he could talk misanthropy. The ride down the bay and the night en the beat, while vciy prolific in enteitaiu meut and fun, and extiemcly barren in comfort te your scribe, would net be of much general interest, se passing en the next morning finds him landing at ene of the wharves in the splendid harbor of old, historic Yorktown, one of the most insig nificant, sleepy villages in the Union, al though light there is where Libeity called a halt te Tyranny ; where the crisis of do de feat and demoralization cainc te old Eng land's haughty" host, and a new era of freedom and hope buist ever America ; and, like the guiding star " came ami steed ever" our patriots and their warm heal ted friends, while the angels of war transformed te angels of peace, twined our laurels with the lilies of France. And what did your correspondent sec ".' Why, a great dusty common containing hundreds of acres with soldiers, tents, men, women, children and niggers, and beer saloons and garni njr apparatus, eating, drinking and smoking .shanties scattered all ever it. Anything that leeks like a horse, nmle or ex tlicy harness up and drive at Yorktown. There you see old wagons, may be centennial relies, drawn by old bony horses, with no harness but cellars, traces aud a back-band guided by knettcd-np rope reins, the latter held and guided by an old negre, who would be out of place entirely if you could sec him any ether place in the world than along with thai turn-out. On this occasion you would see his wagon leaded with brave boys dressed in blue their feet sticking out in every direction, shetting te their pedes trian companions aud the negre wenches, and urging their autiquatcd teamster te move en, whereupon he shouts, Glcp !"' and slashes his gad en the old horses, hav ing the only effect of making them kick up mero dust. They have another mede of conveyance that attracts the attention, it being a mis erable little steer or a miserable big calf, se peer that a buzzard wouldn't think of stepping en it wcre the calf te die. This calf is hitched by a yoke with a single bow te a kind of two-wheeled concern, with a bed en it, and is driven by rope lines fas tened en either side of the head, held be hind by a little nigger. Take one of these wretchedly peer calves with its unique yoke aud the old cart, the wheels of which seem te be trying te leave each ether at the bottom and te touch each ether at the top ; leave the bed be in danger of falling te pieces, seta little nigger, ragged and dirty, and capable of twisting his face into a dozen different ugly contortions, in the cart, set the whole thing in motion and you have a harmonious picture that will make you smile in spite of yeuaself, as you sec it moving along in the sacred dust of old Virginia. And as you see the male and female negrees of Virginia, observe their appearance, motions and talk, note the seemingly eutirc abscuce of intelli gence in them, if you arc at all of a won dering mind you will certainly wendci hew in the world they ever came te have souls. Well worth a visit while attending the centennial was the National cemetery, beautifully located a short distance from the town, where 2,183 Northern soldiers were buried, of which only 749 were known, leaving 1,434 nameless graves. The ccmetcry is nicely enclosed with a new brick wall, and everything about it is kept in the very best order, and wc need net.be ashamed te have such a spot called a national cemetery, granted we wcre net ashamed te make it. The glass is nicely trimmed and green, and where should the nrass crew crrceuer and the dew fall lighter than above the nameless graves of a nation's martyred dead. It is a beauti ful, sad place, and ene where a soldier might rest in peace while he " sleeps the sleep that knows no waking." The most careless cannot view these rows of simple white marble head-stones en the graves of the dead soldiers in their last grand review, the review of death, and net feel sad that these hearts, brave and true, in such a way wete deemed te die ; that wc must have " Battlefields, where thousands bleed Te lilt one here into lame. ' In the very centre of the cemetery, marked by a tall pole from which Hears the stars-and-stripes, at last at rest with these beneath it, is supposed by some te be the very spot were O'JIaia presented Lincoln a certain very important sword, ene hundred years age. About Yorktown thcre is great unccitainty about the exact spot where said presentation took place. Anether point laying claim te the honor is considerable distance from the ccraetciy, aud seems te be ahead in its claim, for right there is where the corner stone (of which mere again) was laid that is te support its part of the monument te be built te commemorate the surrender, and perpetuate the memory of it down the cycles of time. It is a matter of small moment upon what spot the surrender was made, suffice it for us that it was made. The site or the proposed monument l per haps the most desirable one in America. It is en a hUl about a hundred feet above the river, aud but a short distance back from it. The ground is all clear around it, with nothing te obstruct the view of the monument far as the cye can reach in every direction. It will rise iu grand beauty ' above the splendid Yerk river, and always proudly sustain the dig nity of the circumstance that calls it into existence. Uniting the unsurpassed de sirability of its location te the sublimity of the historic scene antl associations and legends surrounding it, the Yorktown monument can never be viewed by an American without"an honest glow of pride that his is the nation that built it, aud that it was our Washington and our forefathers that made that place sacred, and tln bleed of patriotism that consecrates it, and made it a meet place te held as proud a shaft as ever pointed toward heaven. The corner-stone was laid and the cere monies of its laying weie conducted by the Free Masens, and was a very impress ive scene Seats were erected for specta tors fortunate enough te secure them, and for the dignitaiics governors eCstates and their retainers, and "officers of the army and navy, and all ethets deserving te be executed en acceuut of their greatness. Soen after the ceremonies began, the president and his party anived, and as they walked forward te their seats, a band played ' Columbia," and a geed deal of chcciing was done; and as the national music arose, and the large flag waved its red, white and blue, as if tJc music stirred it, or the breeze around that spot were dear te it, one was apt te feel as if he would rather by a geed deal be an Amer ican than anything under the sun. After the stene was laid the governor of Vir ginia delivered an addiess of welcome, hospitable, eloquent and fine in its effect. Tho.pregramme contemplated having the distinguished guests from France and Ger many present during the speaking, but the fleet that bore them did net sail up the river till the exercises were far advanced, and the guests did net disembark until the next day, Wednesday. When the HeeL came in sight the largest vessel dis played both the Fiench and the American Hags, the litter of which was lowered as anchor was cast, and a salute of thir teen guns fired, which was returned from one of our men of-war, a band iu an American vessel playing the Marseillaise, and the Fiench again heisted the star spangled banner te the mast head, and hung out a number of smaller French, American aud German Hags. Tuesday evening the scene in the harbor was magnificent. All the vessels were dec orated with red, white and blue light, hundicds of them en each vessel from the mast tips almost te the water's edge, ar ranged in most tasteful and varied mau ucrs. They steed out in the dense dark ness of the night with beautiful effect, looking, as your sciihe's friend and travel ing companion said, " like immense Christ mas trees covered with tapers." About eight o'clock several of the vessels began sending up rockets that added greatly te the lu-auty of the already beautiful spectacle. Moanwhile bands from every quaiter could be heard gaily playing, while such airs as " Columbia," " Stal Spangled Banner," and " Yaukee Doc Dec dio " predominated iu the performances. It was a grand illumination, the lights bo be ing lcllccted in the water, and caught up and Hung back and forth, the rockets' long tails of lire in the air, where they burst into constellations of beautiful stars, high in the cloudy darkness of the night, hiss ing iu every direction, Hying athwart each ether, showering sparks by the millions, and below tha deep, dark, waving river a magnifying mirror, that divided every ray of light into a dozen and concentrated the beauty of a dozen into each one it was a sight a witness can never forget. Thcie were hundreds of interesting things about which columns might be written with time and space, of which there is a sen city at present. Altogether it was a most enjoyable trip, with a few vexations and inconveniences resultant from limited accommodations in the town, of course, but well worth the time aud money invested. And besides, your cor respondent thinks he is a much better citi zen since his pilgrimage and the devotions he paid at Liberty's shrine. Drumeiu:. The Moravian Exodus. '. V. Independent. The Moravian church in this country is small, and such a less as it has just expeii enccd in the withdrawal into the Protest ant Episcopal church of the fiev. Mr. Jor Jer dan, two weeks age, followed immediately by the withdiawal last week into the Re formed Episcopal church, of the Ilcv. Mr. Hollinan, of Philadelphia, with his whole congicgatieu, is no small one. Te this should be added the fact, which seems te have escaped the attention of journalists that the same cause which has produced these secessions has within the last two years led two or three ether of most actie -Moravian ministers te withdraw into secu lar life. The chief difficulty in the case is that the American Moravian church cannot possess any natural and national develop ment, as it is restrained by the foreign control. Every ten years there is held a general synod in Germany, and this is the supreme authority. It is managed by men who cannot possibly understand the life of our own churches and who arc almost cer tain te de them injustice. Anyohaugeor development in methods would be likely te find no favor with them. The Unity's Elders' conference iu Germany is a court of appeal in the case of any difference here, and they arc neccssaiily igneiant, and must judge by partial information, with no chance for one accused te defend himself. Three years age a considerable discussion was held in the annual confer ence of the American Meravians en this matter, and the result, being the suppeit et the present system by a considerable ma jority of the membcis, has been followed by this secession of these who wcre then in the minority. There has also been grtat complaint that the Provincial El ders' conference, at Bethlehem, Pa., has arbitrary power in moving ministers and demanding that the property of local churches shall be held in its name. This last was the immediate difficulty which drove off Mr. Heffman's church. It would seem only reasonable that these strange and decidedly undemocratic rules might be modified. The Moravian church, how ever, has existed for only two purposes : the cultivation of humble soul piety and the conversion of the heathen world ; and the German way of arbitrary government has prevailed hcie, and any movement te enlarge the church at home has net been particularly encouraged. The transfer of Mr. Jerdan and Mr. Heffman te ether churches has been sig nalized by an exhibition both of Christian fellowship aud of unchristian disfcllow disfcllew ahip. Mr. Heffman was received as a Clnistian brother, of equal ministerial rights. Bishop Stevens, however, ordain erdain cd Mr. Jerdan, as if his Moravian erdkia tien was of no legitimacy. This is cer tainly ene of the strangest ecclesiastical acts we remembcr. We supposed that Bishop Stevens was of low church predi-' lectiens, and net sucii a man as weuiu sec an extraordinary value en the superiority of episcepal orders. We recall, also, that he took a prominent part in the effort te have the legitimacy el" Moravian epis copacy and orders declared at Lambeth. It also eczurs te us that the Anglican church lias definitely proneuncod that the Mora vian orders are valid, and it hardly seems necessary for American Episcopalians te set themselves up as mero stringent than their mother church. We, who regard the right" te preach and administer the sacra ments of a priest ordained by a bishop of the most untainted Greek or Reman suc cession te be net a whit mere valid than that of a brotherjerdained by the brother heed of an independent Baptist church, can afford te laugh at the childishness of the whole question; but we de net see, even en the basis of the trcmendens importance of the unbroken tactual suc cession of bishops' hands, what was the reason for this insult put upon Moravian orders. If we are net misinformed. Mr. Jerdan is of rather high church proclivi ties, and we have heard it suggested that the re-ordination may have been of his choice, and net the bishop's. But, even se, wc have always understood that there was considerable less question attaching te the Moravian episcepal succession than te the Anglican. However, Mr. Jerdan has new get the Moravian succession of Mich ael Bradacius an I the Anglican succession of Matthew Parker, and we hope he will find that they give him a double supply of grace.
