LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1881. Eancaster fntellfaenrrr. FRIDAY EVENING, OCT. 14, 1881. Habits of Snakes. Correction or Many l'epular olens. Mtsapprelicu- Arthur Erwin Brown, of the Zoological . Garden, Philadelphia, writes the following interesting letter te Petest and Stream: In a recent number of Ferest and Stream you ask for further information en the habits of the rattlesnake, as stated in an interesting letter en that subject from a writer in North Carolina. While con siderable observation has evidently been made by your correspondent, some of his conclusions arc cot altogether sound, and you will permit me te state a few facts, which are reasonably well ascertained te be such. 1. Ne szrpent covers its feed with slime before swallowing it. There is no organ provided for such a purpose, and it would be about as easy te paint in water colors with a sharpened slate pencil as te smear a "slimy fluid " ever the hair or feather of an animal with the slender pointed tongue of a snake. Deglutition usually begins at once without any preliminaries when tbe pcy is secured, and the secre tion of the salivary gland serves merely te facilitate its passage down the oesephagus and into the stomach. 2. As te the supposed powers of fascina tion in snai:cs. In general, animals placed in a case te serve as feed arc perfectly in different te the presence of the snake until the latter becomes aggressive when they naturally i-hew much fear, but under no circumstance have I ever been able te find any trace of a power te charm en the part of the snake. Jt is icaseuably safe te strike out the iutcntienm element implied by the common belief, and te attiibute the be havior of the victim te trance or nervous exhaustion. It is well ascertained that this curious mental slate often known as "Braidistn " or "Hypnotism" can be induced by fear, and also by having the attention strongly attracted te one object in a lived manner, for even a short space of lime. Without going into a long dis cussion, it will be apparent te all who are at all familiar with the experiments that have been made en this subject, that the slew appieach, and the fixed, glittering eye of the nnakc might be a frequent cause of this condition in the pi cy which it was about te seize, under which circumstances se long as no external cause, as a noise or a sudden movement, eccuricd te give a shock te tlic nervous S3rstem te the animal affected, there would appear te be a com plete iuiuI vms of the meter nerves and an incapacity te cflect any voluntary motion te escape fiem tlic spot. It is almost need less te say that these conditions net infre quently exist with human beings in the face or Maiden danger, which may often be of such a nature that the most firm believer in the supeinatur.il could hardly suppose it te be gifted with a voluntary power of fascination. '&. When a snake lies quiet for a few hours after feeding, it can hardly be pos sible that it docs he te allow digestion te take rl.Mv, as this progress in most ir net in all mu!:es ieqiiiressever.il weeks instead of fiem two te ninu heuis. The m lvjnl.ir force excited by the snake in drawing feed down its threat is consid erable and long continued. Furthermore the ariangcincnt of the two bones compos ing tlie lower jaw and some of these en tciing into the base of the .skull is such that they aie movable en each ether, and cm be dislocated at will, much en larging the threat te give passage te the feed. After this is .swallowed they are drawn back into position by contraction of tlm elastic ligaments which held them together. When tlic operation is com pleted a greater or less time must be al lowed for these overstrained muscles anil ligaments te lecever their tone and con tract. Dining this time it is reasonable te suppose that the snake would just as in ordinal y cases of fatigue he disposed te be still, and te some extent piebably be capable of exertion 4. The usual number of young pre duccil at a birth by the rattlesnake is very probably fiem six te twelve, as stated, but it has been known te be as high as fifteen en one occasion in tlic Philadelphia Zoological Guiden. i. The gcnerali.itien that all harmless snakes lay ejius ami :ill poisonous ones de . net is unsound. The young of the rattle snake, as stated by your coricspendcnt, and piebably all of the venomous serpents, arc produced alive, but se also arc the young of many of our harmless species, as in the familiar cases of the garter snakes and common water snakes. The bringing into the world of young en oviparous or vivipaieus principles really docs net seem te be a matter of vital iiiipeitancc in the economy of thi animal, as it can frequent ly beiiillnenced tescine extent by aitificial conditions. C. The reason given (or the quietude of snakes at night in this latitude is piebably cericct, v:z., me cum et the nignt air and the dew en the ground ; but in this quiet ude reptiles if indeed it be general among them differ fiem most animals instead of agreeing with them. The great propor tion of wild animals seem te be nocturnal in habit, notably all these, both birds and animals, of a carnivorous the therefore predacious nature 7. The development of the rattles differs somewhat fiem the maimer stated. The snake i.s born with a small knob at the end of the fail, which becomes the button of the fei ihc'.ming rattle. At the end of about six weeks depending much upon the time when the fir.st feed is taken the young snake sheds its skin and one rattle is then added, and subsequently, as a gen eral rule, through life, one new rattle is formed whenever the skin is shed, but this is exceedingly irregular ; the snake some times .sheds three or four times in the course of a year ; sometimes two or three rattles aie produced at once, and occa sionally none at all ; also, rattles arc fre quently lest by accident from the end of the tail, i. e., end of the rattle which are never reproduced, us the new growth is at the base. It is thus readily seen, that while under normal conditions there is a Scnur.il lclatieu between the number of rattles and tiie age of the snake, it is much tee uncertain te afford any correct indication of the latter. What a nest of strange notions is that part of the human brain which may be supposed te be devoted te snakes. All men arc pi one te misrepresentation and superstition in their regard. Everywhere their graceful, gliding motion and their color-. often as striking aud brilliaut as Nature can paint are looked ou with aversion and fear. Hardly a religion et iuicii-niur meucrn unies, oe it classed as mythology or theology, in which the scr pent is net recognized cither as an object te be Tcaied and thcrcfeic hated as the incarnation of evil. Probably lew of your readers ever had their attention drawn te the fact that in all the brute creation, the monkey alone" that rough sketch of man'" shows his sentiments in this le spect and that universally iu the animals of th.it order, se far as inarticulate sounds and the language of gesture can make plain, honor, aversion and fear mingled with an invincible curiosity are found, just as the same feelings are displayed under the highest development of all Naluie's feims.
