them down in the corridor, whence
Watchman William C. Iteed escorts

as usual, a let were thus disposed

under charge of I teed were Harman Kech,
convicted August 22, 1831, of burglary, in
robbing a Mt. .ley barber shop and sent te
prison for a year ; and Win. W. Walker,
a negre, sent te jail August 18, 1831, for
six months, for larceny and carrying con

and a little investigation disclosed that
both iiien had escaped ever the wall in the

It was found that they had made in the

Te the end of one of these was

About 7 o'clock tin's morning a drizzling

On Friday and Saturday evenings of
this week the entertainment for the bene

be held in company C's armory. The main
feature will be the "Broomstick Drill,'"
by the young ladies of the school. This
is something new and novel, yet at the
sain time it will 1)3 very interesting, as
the young ladies who range iu ages between
12 and 18 yeats, will be dressed
in fancy costume, made alike, but
willi different colors. The doers
will open at 7 o'clock, and the drill
begin at 7::0, when an admission fee wiil
be charged. At 8 the doers will be
opened te the public who can then enter
free of charge. Refreshments will then

Last evening Company C held its rcgu rcgu

sorry te say was poorly attended, only
21 men, including officers, appearing in
uniform. Mr. Jehn Purple was appointed
sixth corporal. The promotion was a
dcsei veil one, as Jehn was one of the first
who joined the company and lias ever been

appointments arc te be made next Monday
evening; and probably some discharges.

still manifests a
account of the
publishing the last
year's financial statement. New, Mr.
I Gricr might as well fraukly tell his few
readers what the matter really is with h'm.
It ccitainly is transparent te everybody
that the reason of Lis trouble is because
he did net get the chance te publish it at
the expense of the county. We find by
reference te the records of the com
missioners office, that he charged
the last beard of commissioners $240
for publishing a like statement ; pretty
extravagant we think for a couple of col
umns room iu a paper of the Herald's cal
ibre, or any paper. And furthermore the
lecerd develops that he drew en the or
der of said beard $380, that being, his
annual portion of the public patronage,
for that is the proper name for all moneys
paid by the court for publishing outside of
two or three of the leading papers ;
also by reference te the books
of the office we find that his portion for
the present year is .53 quite a difference,
but the contrast will enable his readers te
cempichend why he rejoices that the ex
piration of the tei m of the present beard
is se close. We have reason te hope that
the succeeding beard will prosecute the rc
trenchme it that the present beard has in
augurated until this printing in our public
expense is reduced te a business standard.
If our hopes are realized Mr. Grier's prc
diament will still be worse. The Herald
will net fail te publish the above state
ment, as its readers are entitled te all the
information it can give them en this sub
ject. Tax Payer.
