Columbia wa3 represented by a commissioners net publi: number tli.t'. man tins :il:en Walker . Plenty mtsirle, s. TLc that it is the custom earlv in the merniiiir. about 5 o'cleik, for Watchman Thompson te go up stairs and into the cells, wake up the prisoners who work at tobacco strip ping, S:c., in the brick building and turn them down in the corridor, whence Watchman William C. Iteed escorts them te their work. This morning, as usual, a let were thus disposed of and among these who were sent out under charge of I teed were Harman Kech, convicted August 22, 1831, of burglary, in robbing a Mt. .ley barber shop and sent te prison for a year ; and Win. W. Walker, a negre, sent te jail August 18, 1831, for six months, for larceny and carrying con cealed weapons. Heed says Kech asked perniis.Meii te go te the pump aid wash his face. The request was net an ui.usu il one and was granted. Fer a moment Itecd's attention was lecalled te the prison, Kech was en his way te the pump, and when Iteed looked again he was gene. At G a. m. the undcrkceper.s also missed Walker and a little investigation disclosed that both iiien had escaped ever the wall in the early dawn. It was found that they had made in the cells lopes from old rags ami bed clothes. Mr. Walter Swarm, who is clerking at Leavenworth, Kansas, sent home ;v burr containing ten hazel nuts, which lie says grew in prelusion iu that ceuntv. The burr is a curiosity, as nothing e the kind was ever before seen iu Columbia. The printing office owned by Mr. Steve Moderwell will most likely be bought and run by Mr. Frank Sencr, a nephew of Squiie Crier, of the Herald. We wish him success in his undertaking and hope our citizens will give him a fair show of their patronage. Pennsylvania Itailread Detectives Ken nedy and Jehnsen have been notified te be en the " lookout " for a young boy aged 18, by the name of Courtney, who ran away from his home in Philadelphia yesterday. It is thought that lie will eeme this way, as his companions say he was going out West. About 7 o'clock tin's morning a drizzling lain set in and increased in power until at 10 o'clock it fairly poured. That we needed it is without a doubt, for the fields iu the country present a very dry appearan: c,the river is unusually low for this time of the year and everything had a dry and salty le'd:. At 11 a. m. the clouds broke and a clear day it. new predicted. This morning while Mr. P. S. Bletz was dismounting from his carriage iu front of E. K. Smith A; Ce.'s banking house, his horse, becoming frighted, started oil' throwing the gentleman violently te the ground. Seiieus injuries might have been the result, but for the quickness of Mr. Scner Bletz, whe, sccing his father's danger, promptly stepped the horse Mr. Ulctz was considerably shaken up but received no damage worth mentioning. In ycstci day's issue we noticed the fall ing trip of Mr. Jacob Snyder and another gentleman. Seme of the points were mis represented. They did forget te put tin- bag in the beat, but returning for it found tliat somebody had stolen it. It contained a whejc suit of clothes belonging te Mr. Snyder, several eut-line-, five hun dred hooks and several ether articles. On Friday and Saturday evenings of this week the entertainment for the bene fit of tue Presbyterian Sunday school will be held in company C's armory. The main feature will be the "Broomstick Drill,'" by the young ladies of the school. This is something new and novel, yet at the sain time it will 1)3 very interesting, as the young ladies who range iu ages between 12 and 18 yeats, will be dressed in fancy costume, made alike, but willi different colors. The doers will open at 7 o'clock, and the drill begin at 7::0, when an admission fee wiil be charged. At 8 the doers will be opened te the public who can then enter free of charge. Refreshments will then be sehl. A large attendance is requested. Last evening Company C held its rcgu rcgu ler monthly inspection, which we arc sorry te say was poorly attended, only 21 men, including officers, appearing in uniform. Mr. Jehn Purple was appointed sixth corporal. The promotion was a dcsei veil one, as Jehn was one of the first who joined the company and lias ever been an attentive member, and is one of the bast drilled men in the company. Other appointments arc te be made next Monday evening; and probably some discharges. Capt. Case had diawn up an article, bind ing all who Mgncd it te go te Yorktown, providing the "company gees. Our pies, ent prospects are bright ; but, ah, what a disappointment it would be if the com pany would be compelled te stay at home! still manifests a account of the publishing the last year's financial statement. New, Mr. I Gricr might as well fraukly tell his few readers what the matter really is with h'm. It ccitainly is transparent te everybody that the reason of Lis trouble is because he did net get the chance te publish it at the expense of the county. We find by reference te the records of the com missioners office, that he charged the last beard of commissioners $240 for publishing a like statement ; pretty extravagant we think for a couple of col umns room iu a paper of the Herald's cal ibre, or any paper. And furthermore the lecerd develops that he drew en the or der of said beard $380, that being, his annual portion of the public patronage, for that is the proper name for all moneys paid by the court for publishing outside of two or three of the leading papers ; also by reference te the books of the office we find that his portion for the present year is .53 quite a difference, but the contrast will enable his readers te cempichend why he rejoices that the ex piration of the tei m of the present beard is se close. We have reason te hope that the succeeding beard will prosecute the rc trenchme it that the present beard has in augurated until this printing in our public expense is reduced te a business standard. If our hopes are realized Mr. Grier's prc diament will still be worse. The Herald will net fail te publish the above state ment, as its readers are entitled te all the information it can give them en this sub ject. Tax Payer. DEATHS. Slat-makeis.
