E TOBACCO MARKET. SEED LEAF AND HAVANA. Far the Ween Ending Saturday, September 17, lO A. at. U. S. Tobacco Journal. Unabated is the activity in our market. The most notable feature of the week was the sudden prominence '80 Connecticut regained. This stock, treated with almost studied neglect all along the season, is new examined and taken held of with great eagerness. This is but the conse quence of the high views of holders of '80 'Pennsylvania. These people arc in no hurry te sell, ask figures which startle the best payiuQ buyers, and justified as their views may be, naturally drive customers te turn their attention te ether 'SO crops. Connecticut had the best share of this turn. Se far as could be ascertained about 1,500 cases of this were sold, most ly under the name of Housatonic. In form er days heders of Connecticut tobaccos would call nearly everything " East Hart Hart eord" growth. New the fashion is te call nearly everything grown in the New Eng land states " Housatonic." It does net make much difference anyhow, as long as the tobacco is geed. Next te these ex tensive sales in '80 Connecticut this week come these of '80 Pennsylvania with 1,600 cases, the best of which (a packing of 250 cases) is quoted at 21 cents. After this the tide of sales ran towards '80 New Yerk state tobacco, 500 cases of which were re ported at private terms ; '80 Ohie figures with about 475 cases with about 475 cases from 91 te 14 cents te manufacturers. Sev eral safes of '80 Wisconsin Havana seeds, numbering probably 400 cases, were re ported by brokers, but neither buyers' nor sellers' name could be ascertained. '79 stock of all grades moves in but small quantities. There is very little of it in the market. Altogether our market exhibits a state of activity unknown te the eldest leaf deal ers. There is no doubt money is being made en all sides, but even at the present comparatively high prices, the profits arc et considered te be se very extensive. Especially these of the old packers, who remember the times when 10 te 20 cents per pound profit en large packings was a net uncommon occurrence, arc went te smile wcefiilly at the great joy and satis faction exhibited by the younger houses when a few cents profit par peuud en a packing have been realized. As we no te press another sale of 500 cases '80 Penn sylvania is reported. This brings the total sales of this week up te about 5,500 cases. The largest for many years. Havanc Ma'ket continues very active. Sales : 1,300 bales, of which about 700 were of the '80 crop. Prices firm. The Tobacco Tax. The movement among tobacco men te secure the reduction or etitire removal of the tax en tobacco will this year be marked by mero- vigor and energy of purpose than that of former years. Every year it is con tinued brings with it greater unanimity el action and tends te that organization without which the accomplishment of this long-cherished and generally desired abo lition cannot b3 effected. This year, tee. the movement receives an impetus and support from an unexpected quarter, and in the avowed advocacy of Senater Den Cameren, it may ba said te assert itself mero emphatically and decidedly than it has done hitherto. I! Is Betluess. The New Yerk cigar manufacturing firm of Kerbs & Spiess have se far this season been the heaviest buyers in the Lancaster tobacco regions. Their purchases num ber ever 1,(500 cases already. The leaf brokerage firm or J. S. Gans' Sen & Ce., of Water street, did the largest brokerage bu.-iness last week ; besides sales of sonic 1,800 cases of leaf, they sold 1,000 bales of Havana te Schrecder & Ben, of Water street, 700 of which were from H. Schubart & Ce., of Water street. 1,000 cases of '80 Pennsylvania they sold from E. Heffman & Sen, Water street, te Chas. F. Tag & Sen, Frent street. ' Sammy and the captain are workers. The Hush for 'SI. Lancaster Correspondence T obaeco Journal. Mr. Brewnstine, of the firm of Gosliti Gesliti skie & Ce., had made an offer of 20 cents "round " en a fifteen aero let of tobacco, which the owner thereof, a Mr. Hamper, deemed quite satisfactory, but neverthlcss desired the privilege of advising Mr. D. Mejer, as he had previously entertained an offer from him, stipulating, however, with Mr. B. that unless he get 25 cents he would net sell te him. These negotiations taking place in the Cadwcll house in this city, occupied but few moments, after the expiration of which Mr. Meyer accepted the same at the advanced figure. The prediction that this activity would stimulate the market for 1880 tobacco is being fully realized, many packers aggre gating several thousand cases, having this week passed from the packers' into job bers' hands at an advance of 1 te 3 cents per pound from that which was asked but a few days age. In one instance the pack er, after having sold his 700 te 800 cases at the price he had asked, offered his check for $2,000 if relieved from his sale, but which the purchasers promptly declined . Tobacco Farming lu the West. The Appleton, Wis., Crescent, in its last issue, ceutaius the following notice : Mr. M. Gechcnauer has been experimenting this summer in raising tobacco, and has 600 plants en lets in the First ward, look ing splendid. The variety is the Pennsyl vania seed leaf. Seme of the leaves are 44 inches in length and 24 inches wide, the entire let looking thriity. Mr. G. will cure the tobacco and send it te his brother in Pennsylvania, a dealer aud an expert, and if the results prove satisfactory, he will engage largely in its production an other season. Gochenauer was formerly a resident of Lancaster, Pa. The Philadelphia market. Leaf. Seed Leaf-Anether splendid week's work can be reported for cigar leaf. 1830 crop of all kinds is moving off nicely, and it new leeks as if the wishes and desires of packers of that crop would ba fully real ized ; the figures leaf is being sold at show its merit Dealers anticipated a fair busi during the whole of the winter. Prices held steady and favor holders. The Official Keporie. The following report is issued from the department of agriculture, Washington, D. C. : " The returns from correspondents give a very serious decline in the prospect for the tobacco crop, being some 20 per cent, less than a month since. With the exceptions of the states north of the Dela ware river and Wisconsin in the Wert the universal cempiaint is dreuth. Kentucky and Illinois each report but little ever half a crop, while Tennessee and Missouri re port less than two-thirds. The average for the whole country is only Gj against 85 last mouth and 84 at this same date Inst year." Nei&liberln; Tobacco sales. D. R. Sayler, for Skiles & Frey, have bought in Yerk county of J. McClure, Gatchclville, 2 acres at 20, 5 aud 3 ; N. A. Manifold, Fawn Greve, 2 acres at 25, 5 and 3 ; David Bruce, 2 acres at 2G, G and 3. Honeybrook tobacco growers have made the following recent sales : S. II. McCon McCen nell has sold his crop for 30 cents for wrap pers ever 28 inches long, 20 cents . for second wrappers, and 10 for seconds aud fillers ; Allen McFchidge has sold te Jeff Bard for 28 for wrappers ever 25 inches long, 13, 8 and 3 ; Jehn Davidsen sold te Samuel Hendersen, for 25 for wrappers Over 22 inches long ; Jeseph Stauffer has sold te Bard for 28 cents for wrappers ever 21 inches, and 10 and 3.
