LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCEK. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 1881. fLanrastcr faitrlliflcnrer. MONDAY EVENING, SEPT. 5. 18B1. TOBACCO MARKET. SEED LEAF AND' HAVANA. Fer the Week Ending Saturday! September 3, 10 A. -M. U. S. Tobacco Journal. While the week just passed was net as turbulent as the previous one, and calmer reflection m a measure toned down the high feti uug expectations of holders of '70 and "80 tobaccos, matters are neverthe less iu a condition which frighten pros pective buyers from the market. In conse quence of this transactions were net as large as might have been expected. It is mere than improbable that prices of leaf will go down for the next twelve mouths te come. Time and time again of late we made this assertion, and subsequent facts have borne them out. Hew buyers can avoid paying the new higher figures later en we fail te see. What may be dear te-day may be still dearer to-mei row. There is but one limit te the asking of tee high a figure (say, for instaucc, anything much above 50 cents for line wrappers), anil that is the presence of Sumatra to bacco ou our market. It will take the place of flue seed leaf and prove a most powerful competitor te holders of high priced seed wrappers. The usul complaints of manufacturers and jobbers who take their supply from packers that the latter arc again buying tee early and paying tee much for the new tobacco, are being heard new stronger than ever, and the tobacco press is bciugcentiuually asked by them te decry the practice and denounce these concerned. Hit is taken into consideration that the crop of '81 is no larger thau of '70 and '80, that the consumption is in creasing, and that the stocks en hand arc hardly much above home demands, these early investments en part of packers can not be called unbusinesslike nor de they deserve te be se stigmatized. It would be mere te the intciest of jobbers and manu facturers if leal could be kept down te a low range of figures, but cau oue individ ual packer, under the abeve noted circum stances, afford te wait until the farmer is ready te sell at low figures ? The packers of leaf are net an harmo nious unit that will freeze the farmer into submission te low prices by leaving his tobacco severely alone till late iu the win ter or early in the spring. Te buy the best crops a packer must buy early, pro vided the prespects for prelitable sales are geed. The complaining jobbers aud man ufacturers must admit that the prospects are geed unusually geed and hence the packer docs, what they as geed business men, would also de were they iu his place. The sale:; during the week were some thing unusual iu point of routine. 'SO Ohie took the lead iu the market, about l,tI00 cases having been sold mainly te manufacturers iu this city at from 1) te 11 cents for running, and about 18 cents for wrappers. Next come sales of about COO cases '80 Pennsylvania at from 1G te 20 cents for medium and line running. AVis AVis ceiiRin Havana, etc., were sold about 700 cases at private terms. 150 cases '70 Con necticut wrappers were bought at about 150 cents (se at least interested parties tay). Outside of these, 200 cases of '80 Connec ticut seconds sold at l'.U cents. Havana A very active market. !S0 Havana sells mere readily new thau ever. Most, of the sales of 1,400 bales made this week were of the '80 crop ; figures arc ad vancing. That Parental Feeling for Tobacco (rewers: Journal. It will be seen from a corresiteudeut iu another column that ene of New Yerk's leaf merchants and packers, Mr. Uunzl, has iu an open letter advised the farmers of Pennsylvania te ask a deposit of $100 te $150 per acre from purchasing parties. Mr. Buuzi holds that through this the farmers are protected agaiust the whims of irre spensible purchasers at the time they deliver their crops te the warehouses. Mr. Uunzl's heart just new evidently needed an outlet of some of its goodness, and the farmer has been made the willing or un willing object ; but net alone his heart he taps, lus gall tee he permits te overflow upon the uususpcctiug competitors iu the Held. Of late many new ami young tobac co houses have made their appearance iu Pennsylvania as prospective packers of tobacco. Fer mauy years previous te this, but comparatively few firms, among which is the one of Mr. Uunzl's, bought up the Pennsylvania crops and consequently bought them at low aud profitable rates from farmers. The new comers created new competition, and if anybody, the far mers had the benefit of it, aud the profits of the few pioneer jacking houses were somewhat curtailed. Mr. IJuuzl's outpour ings, therefore, arc net at all te the interest of the farmers, but an undisguised slur upon the character of his competitors. Gaus' Repert. Mrs. Frances Hodgsen Burnett, the well known novelist, appeared in a new charac ter at Leng Beach en Friday when she saved the life of Mr. Larz Andersen, the oxeuter of the Longworth estate iu Cin cinnati. The story el this brave act cau cau net be better given than in the words of the heroine herself, who thus told it te a reporter yesterday : "Mr. Andersen and his wife came te the bete! en Thursday. I did net knew them very well before, but when 'That Lass e' Lewrio's ' was published Mr. An An dereon wrote me a most kind letter, one that was very pleasant te get. During the day Mr. Andersen, his wife aud myself were together almost all the time aud we became great friends. 'I had net been well for sonic days ami Mr. Andersen pro posed that we should take a bath before breakfast, as he thought one would give us an appetite. Accordingly en Friday morning Mr. and Mrs. Audersen and I went down te the bathing houses. It was se early that the bath men were net there, and we could see no one except ourselves upon the beach. Mrs. Audersen did net intend te bathe, and when I came out ready for the water I saw Mr. Andersen coming at the same time down towards the bridge ever the creek. The water in this creek is sometimes quite deep aud sometimes quite shallow. It varies with the tide, you knew. Mr. Andersen went out en the bridge and dived off. I have always been nervous when I sec people diving, because some years aee some of my friends lest a brother who broke his neck plunging into shallow water, aud 1 b.tvc never get ever the effect which their grief had en me. Te this day, when I see a gentleman dive, I almost held my breath until I see him come up. Well, when Mr. Andersen dove off the little bridge, his wife and I were standing en the shore. He did net come up for a moment, and when he did his face only came out of the water as far as his elfin. He said in a horrible tone, ' Oh, Ged !' and his wife called out, ' what is the mat ter, Larz ; arc you hurt ?' He made no answer, but began te sink again. Mrs. Andersen started off at once, screaming for heln, but there was no ene there. I Then I rau into the water and pulled him en shore. The water was net deep ; net mere that 3 feet, I should think, and I did net knew what else te de except te get him out of the water as quick as possible. He looked horrible, his head hung ever, and I was afraid he was dead. I carried him up en the shere and laid him down, and then Mrs. Andersen came with some men she had found and they carried him up te the hotel. " Mr. Andersen tells me that he was perfectly conscious all of the time and knew what he should de, although he was utterly unable te de anything. It must have been horrible for him te realize that he was sinking and net be able te step the few feet necessary te make him safe. The only thing I am surprised at is my being able te carry him, for he is a heavy man and I am net very strong. Dr. Morten at tended him, and te-day, I am glad tb say, he is much better. His arms and shoul ders hurt him, but he can move them, al though with some pain. It is a wonder ful thing that he is net mere hurt than he is, aud we arc all very thankful that it has net turned out te be a very bad acci dent." Mrs. Burnett, who is of rather slight figure and docs net enjoy robust health, hardly seemed te realize in telling this steiy that she had done anything at all out of the ordinary run. Dr. Morten, the physician in charge of Mr. Andersen, sain, when asked about the case : " Mr. Andersen is suffering from a slight wrench of the spine and a severe strain of the cords and muscles of the neck and shoulders. When he struck, the head was thrown violently forward, the neck being bent very suddenly. This is the origin of the strain. There are -no symptoms of paralysis, nor de I anticipate any trouble of that kind. He is much better te-day, and I hope te see him out in a few days. The water in which he dove could net have been mere thau thrce feet deep, aud it is a wonderful thing that he did net break his neck."
