Dr. Reyburn said at i) a. m. the swelling is no worse and the general condi tion of the president is a little better. The anxiety is somewhat lessened by the de velopments of the morning, but the gravity of the situation is still appareut. Ne Material change. Executive Mansion, Washington, Aug. 2211 a .m.--Unefficial. The presi dent's condition has net materially changed since the morning bulletin. There has been no recurrence of vomiting aud the patient has taken a small quantity of milk ponidge and a little koumiss without nausea. Incoherence ui .Speech. It has been rumored that his mind wan dered at intervals, but this reported men tal disturbance seems te have been noth neth inr mere than a slight incoherence of speech, immediately after aroused from sleep befere the senses were fully under control. It has net occurred at any ether time and is perhaps due te extreme weakness. The swelling of the parotid gland remains about stationary. The feeling at the executive mansion this fere neon is one of anxiety, but the general im pression seems te be that there is no greater catisn for alarm new than there has been for two or three days. Dr. Dllss oil the Situation. Executive Mansion, Washington, D. C. Aug. 22., Noen Unofficial. Dr. Bliss reports at 11:10 a. ni. that the con dition of the president is slightly better than yesterday. There has been no nau sea nor vomiting since yesterday afternoon and the .stomach seems te be again re suming its lunctiens. Tha pitieal has swallowed and retained without discen fort since morning about twelve ounces of milk porridge aud koumiss, and at 7 a. in. an cnein.i of beef extract was administered. Anether enama will be given about neon. There has been no change in the appear ance of the parotid gland since yesterday, although there has been a further slight subsidence of the inflammation of the sur rounding parts. The surgeons hope that they have this feature of the case under control, although they cannot yet speak with confidence. The. gland may suppurate within the next three or four days, notwithstanding the meas ures which have been taken te reduce the inflammation. In that case the pus will be liberated by an incision just as seen as its existence becemes apparent. This will net necessarily invelve great peril if the patient's strength can be sustained. The danger most te be apprehended new, Dr. Bliss says, is exhaustion and with this danger they hepj te deal successfully unless the stomach entirely breaks down. Thus far te-day the indications are that that organ is improving iu tone and the seerctieu of phlegm in the threat has se far decreased that it gives the patieut no especial anneyance and he is relieved from the necessity of making such efforts te expel it as these which brought en the vomiting yesterday after noon! Dr. Bliss says that the patient's pulse at 6 o'clock this morning was 98 and at half-past cloven 104. Ne Recurrence of Vomiting. Executive Mansion, Washington, D. C, Aug. -12:30 p. t. Official. The president has continued this morning te retain liquid nourishment taken by the mouth as well as by enema. There has been no recurrence of the vomiting and no nausea. Tbe parotid swelling is net materially smaller but continues painless. It has caused for a day or two anauneying accumulation of viscid mucus iu the back of the month, but this symptom lias new much abated. At present his pulse is 104, temperature 93.4, respiration 18. Signed D. W. Bliss, J. K. Barneh, J. J. Woodward, Robt. Reyburn, D. Hates Aenew. Dr. lloynten's Opinion. Washington, D. C, Aug. 22, 1:30 p. m, Dr. Boynton, Mrs. Garfield's physician, who is new acting as nurse te President Garfield, was met at the Ebbitt Heuse, few moments age by a representative the associated press, when the following dialogue took place. "In your opinion, doctor, what is the outlook at present?" "I think the president is a little im proved te-day, ha has taken and retained his nourishment well. " "What kind of nourishment arelyeu giv ing him te-day ?" "The same as heretofore, koumiss and porridge." "Dees the patient appear te relish it?" " Oh ! yes he asked for it this morning, yen knew." ' Hew de yen feel about the glandular of trouble te-day ?" " I feel better about it today." " Has it grown materially harder than it was ?" "Ne,I de net think it quite se large as it was, and I am quite confident should sup puratien set in, it would be in a much smaller degree aud have a less serious ef fect than it would have had it com; menccd te suppurate before If it should suppurate new possibly it will net de any great injury." " What are the cliances of preventing suppuration ?" "Well, I can't answer that question It is a very uncertain complication and one about which no reliable predictions cau be made." ' " Hew long will it be befere you can deeide whether or net suppuration is likely te occur?" " The glandular affection became visible en Wednesday last. I should think by te-morrow or Wednesday we should be able te determine." " De you consider that the president's stomach is performing its normal functions new?" "Yes I think his stomach is doing very well. " " There has been some talk about the president being dclireus at times doctor, what arc the facts about that?" "The president has been a little dclireus at times but it has net amounted te any thing serious. " "Te what de you attribute the delir ium?" " It is caused by his extremely feeble condition, together with his long illness. It would be likely te occur in any case where a patient had become se enfoeblcd as the president has. " " Theu you de net attach any great im portance te it ?" " Ne, sir, net at all." "Well, doctor, I understand that the attending surgeons have administered with the enema a portion of opium; is that true ? If vj would it net have a tendency te cause delirium ?" " Iu all cases where euemtta aie admin istered a small quantity of laudanum or something similar is ene of the component parts. This is administered for the pur pose of aiding the retention of the enema ; it isn't sufficient te cause delirium." " What de you think of the case en the whole te-day ?' " I feel mere encouraged then I did yes terday." The doctor intimated at the conclusion of the interview that the president was still in a very precarious condition, aud that his encouragement was baser! en the present outlook. An Unefflclal "Bulletin. Executive Mansion, 2:10 v. m. The president is passing a quiet afternoon and sleeps a geed deal of the time. Up te the present hour he has swallowed aud retained te-day 22 ounces of liquid nourishment consisting of milk porridge and koumiss. He has also had two enemas, one at 7 a. m. and one seen after neon. Ne new un favorable symptoms have appeared and his general condition is about the same as at 12:30. The following was sent this afternoon : Te Lewell, Minister, Londen : The prcs dent's condition has somewhat improved since the last report. He has net vomited for 21 henrs, and during the forenoon has swallowed liquid feed several times, in all about ten ounces. Weather very warm. but does net affect him.
