PBji LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER. TUESDAY, AUGUST 16, 1881. :t IC" I I- ILancaster intelligencer; TUESDAY KVKKINO, XVh. 16, 1881. A Terrible Death. A Crazy -Weman SeU Fire te Uercelf and Then Takes a Walk. Mr. Jehn Saunders, a florist, is one of the eldest citizens of Elizabeth, N. J. He is mere than 60 years of age, and his wife, whom he married about 0 years age, was a little ever 40. She was a widow, and bad Eared some money, having been employed for many years as a domestic in the house of Colonel Kane, of Elizabeth. After her second marriage, some five months age, she gave up her occupation in Colonel Kane's house and went te live with her husband, who was then in comfortable circumstances, and working as a gardener for Colonel Kane. Saunders lest or re iigned his occupation, and his wife grew very despondent. She blamed herself for having married him. and threatened en various occasions te destroy herself. She had some small property left her by her first husband, but she seemed te be haunted by a fear of approaching poverty. Mr. Saunders finally obtained the position of gardener for Mr. Blakely, of Elizabeth, and was in receipt of geed wages; but this did net encourage his wife, who still lamented ever what she believed' te be his lack of occupation, he fruitlessly endeavor ing te undeceive her. On Thurwlay morning she appeared te be especially discouraged, and spoke of the wretched prospect before her. She was net in geed health, and Lcr husband sup posed that her discontent was due te her illness. They retired early ia the evening, and when Mr. Saunders awoke en Friday morning his wife was net in the house. Shttwas in the habit of geiug down stairs and lighting the lire early every morning, and at first Mr. Saunders was net alarm ed ; but as the time passed and she did net return, lie remembered her threats of suicide, and grew a little uneasy. Dress ing himself, he went down stairs te'find that while the preparations te light the kitchen fire had been mads, it had net been lighted. While he was examining the premises a body that he could hardly recognize as that of his wife was carried by a party of men ihte the house and laid upon the bed. Life was net extinct, al though the woman groaned and muttered te herself, no articulate sound passed her lips, and she died in an hour after she was brought home without having uttered a word. There were several burned matches lying en the fleer near the fireplace, but evi dently none of thcpi had been applied te the combustible material in the range. There was also a bottle containing kero sene oil staudiug near the deer, but none of the oil had been poured ever the weed and paper in the fireplace, nor could any be detected en the burned garments of Sirs. Saunders. At first the question as te the cause of Mrs. Saunders's death re mained unanswered ; but later in the day some light was thrown upon the mystery. A Mrs, Magce, living with her husband in the same street, was looking out of her bedroom window early en Thursday niorn niern inc, and s-he saw a woman, wrapped in flames, walking slowly past. ITer clothes were biaz'njr se fiercely that Mrs. Magec could net distinguish the features. But she saw that the wemau seemed unaffected by the pain she id list have been sufie4pg, for she uttered no cry and did net increase her pace. Mrs. Magee stared at her aghast uutil she had almost passed the house. Then she ran and awakened her husband and hastily told him told hiin the story. He arose, dressed himself rapidly, and taking shawls and blankets hurried after the woman and quickly overtook her. He flung the blankets ever her and seen ex tinguished the fire, but net before he was henibly burned. She afforded him no as sistance, neither did she attempt te im pede his efforts. Slie bimply remained impassive, though apparently conscious. This wemau was Mrs. Saunders. Slump Pickers. Sheeting llie Cutter Sn!pe. New Yerk Herald. Swarthy of lac;?, with a tangle of black hair ever-hanging the sharp, bright eyes, liis garments uncouth and ragged and his equipments an old tin can, such is the fig ure of which humanitarian influence is try ing te rid the city's thoroughfares. He is only a child in years, but the pinched face and the frightened timorous expression it wears show he has tasted little of the sweets of life and passes his days a drudge, with the dread of a blew ever before him. Ge about the markets where the refuse of the stalls is scattered and you see the little figure dclviug ameug the rubbish and gathering caicfully such fragments of meats or fruits as are least tainted and im pure. In retiring back streets and modest lanes te which the big hotels extend from the thoroughfares they front en, he is vis ible at. times seiting the contents of the barrels into which slops of the kitchen are emptied. But it is early in the morning and during the later hours of the evening that the lit tle drudge performs his chief duties. There he is about en the thoroughfares themselves, ragged as before and bearing his inevitable tin cau, but he does pause or lounge about new. His way is ever the pavement and through the gutters, new circling about the doorway of seme sump tuous saloon, and again whipping into the middle of the street among the hoofs of the hordes and whirl and rumble of the wheels. His eyes arc always en the ground. They only stray from ite guard against his being trodden down. v hat he is in quest of is there tee, for by fits 'and starts he pounces en some unsightly fragment, half hidden among the steucs or almost covered out of sight by the dust and slush. He picks up ethers from the saw dust of liquor stores, from the garbage of the boxes, from the mud of the very gutters, and all find their way into his tin can. A glance into this vessel reveals a brownish unsavory mass, sprinkled with ashes and mixed with dirt, ill of odor and nauseous te leek upon nothing mere nor less than decaying cigar stumps. They have come from every quarter and in every shape. There arc bulky Reina Victorias lying cheek by jowl with weeds born and bred in New- Jersey cabbage fields ; Henry Clays are there, with aud without the wrappers, sandwiched be tween the residue of some plebeian cheroets: weeds of every brand are inter mingled aud inteitwiued, and all in grealer or less stages of decomposition. These are the treasures the ragged street plodder gather?, and his is the calling which, years age, in the slang of tha streets, was dubbed ' butt picking." Te the ordinary resident of the city, familiar with the argot of the day, " butt picking" suggests only the act of the prematurely precocious boy who aspires te the use of the weed, eagerly utilizes the remnants of mere mature smekers1 cigars, and gees puffing about as proud as a lord if he be suffering from nausea. Bui the little fellow with the tin cau does net gather the stumps for amusement. It is his regular occupation. He is en gaged in it daily, and upon the quan tity l.c collects depends the treatment he will receive from his taskmaster. When music playing and begging were forbidden by law the Italians who Had children of their own or ether peeple's engaged with harp or violin or begging en the corners, turned their services te a cceuut as stump pickers. "But what would they de with the stumps?" is asked. Make cigarettes of them, turn them into snuff, devete them te a score of kindred uses. -The thought is net pleasant for smokers te indulge in, but such a reporter learned was the cus -tenv, and it may be grateful te knew that it is fast terminating. Slaymaker, Agent for Reigart's Old Wine Stere, by a prominent practising physi cian et this county, who has extensively usee the Brandy referred te In his regular practict It is commended te the attention of these a flictcd with Indigestion and Dyspepsia, BRANDY AS A MEDICINE. This new much abused Alcoholic Stimulum was never intended as a beverage, but te it need as a medicine of great potency in the cute of sonic of the destructive diseases which sweep away their annual thousands of victims With a purely philanthropic motive wo"pre sent te the favorable notice et invalids espe cially theso alllictcd with that iniscrabli: di -ease Dyspepsia, a specilic remedy, which is nothing mere or less than Brandy. The aged, with leeble appetite ami mere et less debility, will find this simple mcdiciu, when used properly, A Sovereign Remedy erall their ills and aches. Be it, lioirerci strictly understood that we prescribe and u-"-het one article, and that is REIGARTS OLD BRANDY, Sold by our enterprising young friend, 51 K SLAYMAKER. This Brandy has steed the test for years, and has never failed, as t'ai as our experience extends. and wc thcrrleit give it the prclerence ever all etner Brandies no matter with hew many Jaw-breaking French titles they are branded. One-fourth of tint money that is ycarlvturewn away en various impotent dyspepsia specifics would sulllce te buy all the Brandy te euro any such cae os ases. In proof of the curative powers of Reigart's Old Brandy, In cases of Dyspepsia, we can summon num bers of witnesses one case in particular w cite: A hard-working larmcr had been aiHIctcu with an exhaustive Dyspepsia ler a number e? years; his stomach would reject almost everj kind of feed; he had sour eructatiens con stantly ue appetite in fact, he was obliged te restrict his diet te crackers and stale bread, and as a beverage he used McGranu's Reet Beer.
