LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER, MONDAY AUGtJST 1, t881. THE VAMP. The Worshipers at Landisville. The afternoon trains of Saturday brought large numbers te the camp from all sta tions, -and it seen became evident, that notwithstanding the threatening aspect of the weather, bunday would be a "big day. The 2 o'clock service en Saturday from the stand was largely attended Rev. It. W. Humphries, of Reading, presided and preached an .eloquent sermon based en the text, "We have net followed cunningly devised fables," 2 Peter 1, xvi. Prayer meeting at C p. m., was held as usual in the upper tent and was well at tended. Rev. G. G. Rakestraw, of Down Dewn Down iugtewn, who has charge of this meeting nightly speaks iu glowing terms of his suc cess. Shortly after supper the drizzle changed into drops and a rain was apparent, and en this account the 7A o'clock service was held in the tabcniaefc. " Ged is our re fuge and strength ; a very present help in time of trouble," was the subject en which Rev. Dr. J. 1J. Debbins, of Philadelphia, preached a practical discourse, Dr. Dob Deb Inns, who was at one time stationed at Duke street M. E. church in this city, has lest none of his eloquence and power that made his pastorate in this city se suc cessful. Sunday. Yesterday was all that could be wished for in the weather point of view. Special train were run en both railroads te the camp ground Irem all points ; one train alone, en the P. It. It., from this city, car ried 11 lillcd cars, full of people, te the tented grove. The (i a. m. service was net se well at tended as the love feast at 8, at which Rev.' G.G. llakestraw presided ; no sermon was preached. There was an unusual interest manifested in the services. This was the annual feast of this circuit and always attracts the attention of the clergy and eepc. The sermon of Rev. Dr. Hamlin, of the Ridge Avenue church, Harrisburg, was listened te by ever two thousand persons. It was based en the text, " Fer Ged se loved the world, etc.," from Jehn 3, iii and xvi. Dr. Hamlin is one of the leading spirits in the camp and is consid ered by the Methodist people as one of the most eloquent, ornate and powerful preachers iu Central Pennsylvania. His cilbrt en the occasion justified the exalted opinion his church has of him. His dis course was a sound, practical one, being full of pointed illustrations and logical sayings. The children's meeting at i o'clock was a grand success. It was, indeed, a line sight te see the immense number of little folks ; te listen te their singing and mark the interest exhibited. In point of numbers the " p. m. services was as large as that of the morning. Dr. G. A. Reachc, of Broekl-n, N. Y., pre sided and preached an eloquent discourse en the words : " Hut Christ is All in All." Like Dr. Hamlin, Dr. Reacho stands high among Methodist clcigy, and his discourse en this occasion showed tee well that merit has been well rewarded. Supper ever it became apparent that the large majority of the visitors would leave with the day, and this was visible at the evening meeting at 7A o'clock, which was i resided ever and the sermon preached by Rev. W. C. Robinson, of the Duke street church, this city. The sermon was de livered iu Mr. Robinson's usual clear and forcible style and was an eloquent and ornate discourse, based en the words found in Hebrews vii 2.1 and 2G. Monday. Rev. Mr. Drubakcr conducted the 0 a. m. prayer meeting, and it, with the 8 a. iu. meeting conducted by Rev. G. G. Rakes traw, were very poorly attended. Nearly every person en the grounds was present at the 10A o'eleck meeting te hear Rev. W. J. Millsj of Reading. Fer ever an hour Mr. Mills held the large audience's undivided attention te a discourse ou the theme "The dispensation of glory." His sermon was a practical one divided into three parts; first, the gospel mirror; sec ond, the gospel transformation ; and third, the gospel agency. Rev .Mills is a lice elocutionist and an ornate and eloquent preacher, and the sermon this morning was a oed one. Citiip Ileum. Twe buggies, driven by country boys, collided en the pike near the railroad one is without a wheel and both are badly scratched. Rev. Rebert Carsen , of West Chester, arrived this morning. Rev. J. W. Weed, of Marietta, conduct ed the Jl o'clock meeting te day. A Disorderly Car. Complaint, from an altogether reliable and responsible citizen, comes te us of the lack of regulations and great disorder en the train which left Landisville station en the Pennsylvania railroad last evening at 7 o'clock for Harrisburg. There seemed te be no conductor nor ether eflicial te preserve order and decency. Unruly whites and negrees smoked and otherwise made themselves offensive te ladies, crowded them out of seats, and iu all respects acted se outrageously that the company ought te inquire who is responsible for what has reflected te the diserediL of the read. Surprise Party. Harvey Raymond, the statesman of Lewer Mt. Jey township, residing about a-half mile west of Springville, was the victim of a surprise party en Saturday evening the anniversary of his birthday. Te County Commissioners' Clerk I. N. Wills was deputed the delicate diplomatic duty of getting Harvey away while the surpriscrs get possession. Under pretense of carrying a letter from Commedore Hiestaud te ex-Seuaier Cameren, Mr. Wills obtained Raymond's company te the old Denegal farm. Cameren was, of course, net at home, but when they returned Harvey found that he had been outwitted, and a number of his friends from the neighborhood, Prothenotary McMellen, District Attorney Davis, Treasurer GielF, Messrs A. S. Edwards, J. P. Knight, P. E. Slaymakcr aud AI. F. Shcnck. of this city, Representative Courtney, of Eliza Eliza beththewn, and many ethers were en Hand. They made :t pleasant for Har vey until a late hour and a "great" time was had around a well spread beard. The Spring Garden cornet band serenaded him during the evening aud the members were hand somely entertained. When the "letter" which was borne from one statesman te the ether was pro duced, opened and read it was found te be a writ from Cem. Hicstand directing ex-Senater Cameren te detain Raymond until his friends could set his house in order for the " surprise." Harvey says he is forty-live years old, but in virtue and cxpoiieuce three score and ten. What the l'olice Say. Iu reply te the editorial animadversions of Saturday's 2few Era relative te the dis order en East King street near Lime, ou Friday evening, several members of the police force, who have been interviewed, declare the Era's statement te be a gross exaggeration. It is true, they say, there was an alarm of fire, and for a time consid erable noise aud disorder. The alarm of fire was caused by some of the circus men who, in the southern part of the city, poured upon the ground and burned a considerable quantity of coal oil for the purpose of enabling them te gather up their traps. On reaching the railroad sid ing in the northeastern part of the city, they repeated the operation, causing a great light, well calculated te mislead both firemen and policemen. One of the policemen .in the western part of the city was se certain there was a lire that he rau te the Humane engine house te ring the bell. COLUMBIA NEWS. OUK BEGUI.AU CORRESPONuKNCK. The cylinder head of engine Ne. 102 blew out yesterday afternoon east of Meuatville. Yesterday it rained all around Columbia but here we hardly received a drop. "5 The services held in the different churches were poorly attended yesterday. As engine Ne. 182 of the P. R. R. was going cast at e:30 this morning an axle of one of the cars broke near Dillerville the truck of the same being run off the track. The wreck car was en hand and in the course of an hour the wreck was fixed. A young Columbia man in getting a drink of water at the spring back of the station at Landisville, made a misstep, falling into the spring and receiving a thorough ducking. Engine Ne. 87, attached te the P. R.R. excursion train te the Landisville camp meeting yesterday, gave out near Diller ville, delaying the train for an hour. In a well-known beer saloon en Union street, two men started a light ou Satur day evening, but it was quickly suppressed by the ever ready landlord. Jehn Wolfe, brake man en engine Ne. 03 of the P. R. R., while coupling a car en Saturday had his hand severely mashed. Amputation it is thought will net be necessary. Near the corner of Second and Union streets the read is iu a very bad couditieu, likewise the crossing. Council or thesa havingthc reads iu charge should leek te this matter at once, as it is unsafe for driving. A party drove te A ashiugten borough en Saturday evening aud gave a very pleasant surprise te Miss Eva Shu man. A bass supper was then prepared for the uninvited guests. The dredging machine which was ex pected te arrive here this, morning, te clean the Columbia coal shute, has net yet put in an appearance. About 7 o'clock this morning as a horse aud carriage were coming ever Seuth Sec end street, a wheel broke, throwing the occupants out ever the dasher but receiv ing no damage. A number of Columbia gentlemen went up te sec the Columbia camping-out club, at Coderus. They returned this morning and report that the boys are nicely situa ted ami arc having a splendid time. Miss Ella Heath, who has been visiting Miss Ella Fry, returned te her home in Philadelphia te-day, accompanied by Miss F. Miss Kate Heck, of Harrisburg, is the guest of Miss Ida Decker. Mr. Jehn Klingbell, the janitor of the Columbia public schools, has one of the finest collections of Indian relics, old and costly coins, stuffed -birds and animals, and numerous ether curiosities, te be found anywhere. He will net sell any of them but will show and explain all he knows about them, whiehNve assure yen is net a little. It is hard te tell whether the Osceola Tribe, I.'O. R. M."s excursion was a suc cess or net. Seme say there were nearly four hundred along, while ethers say that only two hundred and ninety three bearded the steamer " Chester." Rut all de say that these who accompanied the excursion had an enjoyable time, which we de net doubt, as they had every thing that could give them pleasure. On beard the beat was ene of the most pleasant features they had. William W. Wanbaugh, a carpenter, -while working at one of the houses ela Mr. Wancr, en Shawnee street, en Satur day, fell between two rafters aud his whole weight falling en his right arm broke it below the elbow, also knocking it out of place at the elbow.. This morning Squire Frank committed William Jeffersen te jail for appearance at court for outraging Eva Baker, a young colored girl about 11 years old. The atro cious deed was committed en the 21st of July, when he had intended taking the girl te the circus, and was only discovered en last Friday. Jeffersen is a barber by trade. The Landisville campmecting, in repaid te numbers, was a failure yesterday. About half of these who generally go there en Sundays were forced te remain home en account of the threatening weather, and Harrisburg was represented by about one-third of its regular number, aud ou the same account, but theso who did go from observation had a very pleas aut time. The Safe Harber train, cairy mg neatly four hundred people, passed through here yesterday morning at 8:10 for the camp grounds. Ou Saturday evening a colored man and his wife came down Union street wrangl ing with each ether. Iu front of Dave Yeung's butcher establishment their dis pute turned into blows and ended by the man pulling out a revolver and threaten ing te blew his wife's heart out if she did net be quiet. She continued abusing him aud he finally fired three shots at her, which missed her, but nearly hit Mrs. Yeung, who was sitting in front of her deer. Other parties interfered and quiet was again restored. It is thought that the first two shots fired were blank cartridges, as the bullets nor their marks could net be found, but the third one buried itself a few inches above where Mrs. Yeung had been sitting. Ne arrests were made. Yesterday afternoon a number of rolling mill liaiifl2 tMilr n pnimtn nf lretrj P ltfil up te Chickies rock, intcndinr te spend! the remainder of the day there. After they had been there nearly an hour, a gang or tramps, probably the same who were arrested by Officers Fisher and Redcuhauscr a few weeks age, joined them aud asked for some beer, which being refused them, they began abusing the mill bauds. After enduring their insults as long as possible one of the hands up and knocked a tramp down. In a few minute; all hands were engaged aud several hard knocks giveu aud received. The tramps were finally put te flight, but net before they had received such a whip ping that they will net seen forget. AT THE FBISUN. XEW ADVERTISEMENTS' Monthly Meeting or the Inspectors. C, Aug. 111:45 a. m. (Unofficial) The president is passing a quiet, comfortable day. Under the supervision of the at tending surgeons, Professors' Bell and Tainter this morning made another appli cation te the patient's body of the elec trical apparatus known as the induction balance, with a view te completing the tests of Saturday, which were uet entirely conclusive, and ascertaining definitely aud certainly, if possible, the location of the ball. Professors Bell ami Tainter have been almost constantly engaged for two weeks in experiments with the induction balance; and have made several modifications and improvements which jjreatly add te its efficiency. They trietl the improved ap paiatus upon the president's body for the first time last Saturday, aud although it iudicated faintly the location of the ball, it was afterwards feuud te be slightly out of adjustment and the experiment .was net regarded as perfectly conclusive. The results of this morning's test, how ever, are entirely satisfactory both te Pro fessors Bell and Tainter, aud te the at tending physicians, and it is new unani mously agreed that the location of the ball has been ascertained with reasonable ex actness and certainty, and fiat it lie", as heretofore stated in these dispatches, in the Irent wall of the abdomen, immedi ately ever the groin, about five inches be low and te the right of the nave). The experiments this morning were re peated several times and weie made by Profs. Bell and Tainter independently, se as te guard as far as possible against errors arising from the faulty perception of a single individual or from one persoe's mistaken judgment as te the comparative intensity of sounds.. In every instance, however, when the small disks attached te the machine were placed in such a pesi tien en the patient's hotly as te indicate the location of the black aud blue spot which appeared en the lower right side of the abdomen seen after the president was shot, the one listeuiug at the microphone said that he detected evidences of disturbance. It made no difference' whether the experi menter could sec the disks or uet, when ever they were placed in that particular position, he became instantly awaic of the f ict aud announced it. The experiments were varied and continued till all were convinced that the bullet had been found or at least located en a straight line run ning through the body from front te back, just above the groin en the right side. It was net possible te ascertain with any degree of certainty the depth at which the ball lies, imbedded en this imaginary line. But as the front wall of the abdomen at this peiut is about two and one-half inches in thickucss, the ball inustiie within that distance of the surface. These results fully confirm the original diagnosis of the case made by the attending sur geons seen after the president received his injury, and that fact is as gratifying te them as the complete success of thu in duction balauce is te the professors, Bell and Tainter. This "is the first instance in which an imledded bul let has. been accurately and defi nitely located without probing and by purely scientific methods. There is no intention en thu part of the surgeons te perform an operation for the removal of the hall at present: se long as it gives no trouble it will be allowed te remain in its present position. The question of the disposition te he finally made of it will be considered when the president shall have recovered his strength and shall be out of danger. VEATHEK INDICATIONS. Washington, Aug 1.
