THURSDAY EVENING, JULY 28, 1881. All ABOUT ANTS. THE INTELLIGENCE OF ANIMALS. Tne Remarkable Development of the Lewer Order of Nature. Philadelphia Evening Bulletin. If something is net done pretty seen te check the progress of alleged discoveries of intelligence among ants, mankind will begin te doubt whether it really occupies the advanced front rank in the march of natural development, after all, and wheth er that place of honor does net rightfully belong te the genus Formica, as a higher order than the genus Heme. In the new number of the Popular Science Monthly, Mr. Geerge J. Romanes collates a number of discoveries by students of ant life which go far te preve that Solemon, in advising a consideration of the ways of that insect, was exercising some of the extraordinary wisdom for which he is famed. We have room for only a few of them here ; per sons who'are interested in the study are referred te the paper itself. In the first place, ants are net only ca pable of distinguishing colors, a fact which is itself remarkable in itseets which show a marked dislike for light except as a help' in their wanderings abroad, but they show a preforence for seme colors ever ethers, and their preference ranges in the order of the influence of colors ou a photographic plate. What is this but a higher develop develep ment of phote-raagnctuftn than ' man has yet attained ? Again, auts have a very keen sense of smell, and can net only fol fel low and find each ether by scent alene, but they can in this way detect members of their own tribe which they have never seen before which, in fact, have been removed from the nest while in the pupa stage and have been returned as perfect strangers. They also appear te have mero caution and common sonse" than is possessed by the majority of human beings. It was found that, te keep them away from a vase of llewers which had a great attrac tion for thorn, and te which they wcre re sorting in a continuous stream, it was only necessary te kill one or two and maim a few mere. The survivors instantly abandoned the spot and did net leturn for months. On the ether hand, when a couple of men are drowned en a danger ous beach or a dozen or mera killed in a railroad casualty, the next tide or the next train brings mere adventurers te the fatal spot than there wcre before. It is curious that ants should have mere-sense than raen in keeping out of danger. Ants can also communicate informa tion, as men can ; but instead of boring everybody within a dozen yards by long drawn gossip about persons and things of no earthly interest, or worrying their friends, who wish te sit still and think, te the extreme limit of forbearance with friv olous talk, they appear te confine- their remarks te short and simple business communications and te impart? them only te the friends whom they desire te inform. In this way business is net interrupted and the general formicary public is net forced te listen te an uninteresting discus sion of private affairs. Auts have a great memory for both places and objects, aud ene generation seems te band down te the next the tradi tion of matters affecting their race ; thus showing at least the rudiments of a his torical faculty. As no iustauces have yet been noticed, however, in which the narratives thus handed down taught any thing but the strictest truth, the faculty is evidently in a rudimentary state as yet unless this, tee, is a higher develop ment of which the human historian new has but faint and fleeting glimpses. These insects also display emotions of various kinds, affection and hatred being the most prominent. They are geed haters and born geed fighters, aud will go further te injure a member of an alien tribe thau te rescue their dearest friends from distress. It is impossible, however, te consider this a higher development than the rare cases of the highest order of human philanthro philanthre phy which are occasionally recorded aud this is ene of the things which warrant an adhorence te the old belief that auts are lower than man in the scale of being. It is well te encourage such a belief how ever slender the basis en which it may be founded. Some interesting information will be found in Mr. Romanes's paper en the thrifty habit noted by the wise man of providing for the future. They take as much care of the aphides which sen e them as cows serve mankind, as men de et then animals, sheltering them from winter storms, establishing them iu fresh pastures, and protecting them from injury. Several species are inveterate slave-holders, and have perfectly learned the lessen which mankind is still struggling with, of never doing anything that another can de for them. These ants have brought the sys sys tern te such perfection that they de net even chew their own feed, but compel their slaves te prepare it and put it in their months. Furthermore, auts have a human like passion for keeping domestic pets, using beetles, crickets and ether insects for his purpose, they are fend of bathing and seem to.prefer the Turkish style of that enjoy ment, being well rubbed down by a slave or a companion ; they frequently indulge in games and wrestling matches, and finally, when ene of their number dies. they held a funeral and bury it decently ; though as nobody has yet succeeded in finding in formicary undertaker's bill, it is pet known whether they have brought this ceremony up te the pitch of human perfection or net. MORE ABOUT ANTa. Description or Peculiarities by an Ant Col Cel Col leceorA Pitched Rattle. "Isn't rice rather strange feed for war blers?" was asked the owner of a line let of birds, who was feeding thcra with that grain. "These are net rice kernels," he re plied, laughing, " but the pupa) or unde veloped young of ants, the best bird feed in the world. In Europe you can buy them by the pint or quart in the market for this purpose, but collecting them in America does net pay. I gather these for my own use en Leng Island." "It must require a great deal of pa tience," the reporter continued, picking up a handful of the white coceon-liko bodies that every one has seen when breaking up an ant settlement. "Net if you understand it," the ant farmer said. "I make the ants collect them for me. Teu see, in every nest of ants there are different kinds, males and females, with wings, that lie around and enjoy themselves, and the workers, who build the houses, make tunnels and feed the young ; you will knew them by their big jaws, just as you would awerkingman by his rough hands. The eggs are little white specks, and from them come the maggots which in a few weeks spin a cocoon like these I have here. Just as seen as the eggs are laid the workers take them in hand. Fer two weeks or mere they keep them moist, and when hatched they feed the maggots. When they turn into cocoons they carry them around as occasion requires, and en their affection for the young I depend for my bird feed. I generally pour a little warm water in the ant's nest or burn tobacco or powder near them under ground, and in a moment hundreds of the workers will be seen rushing out, each with one of these kernels of rice, as you thought, in its mouth, and off they go te seme safe, dry place and pile them up, rushing back for mere until everyone is safe, and then I slip in and bettle them up. I have frequently gotten nearly half a pint from one nest. Any one can see the same thing by destroying a nest in the spring ; the workers will rush out en the slightest warning. I've been something of a traveler, and made it a point te collect ants and watch them wherever I have been, and," pulling out a drawer, "here are seme of them." They were few iu numbers, but a wor thy assemblage. All phases of anthoed wcre arranged by families, and species, perched in mid-air, and secured by pins en cork pads, each carefully labelled with the scicutific and common names, while a number en each label referred te a book iu which the aut collector had taken notes cenceming them. One particular ant; that was labelled as a member of the For Fer micidic family, was decked out with an array of spines that could only be com pared te fishhooks. " Birds would nevcr touch them," the collector said, " and that is probably what the spines are for. Yeu ace, here are ethci's that have simple straight spines. They came from the East Indies, though the family is a world wide one, and are principally remarkable for their nest build ing proclivities.. The nest is made of dry leaves, the edges gummed together. They are harmless creatures, and have no means te attack, and depend en their powers of frightening enemies. When alarmed, they rush out of the nest in a body, strik ing their bodies against the dried leaves, and making a uoise something like that made by a rattlesnake, only mero rosenaut and enough te frighten a bird badly. "Here is a queer fellow," he continued, holding up one about an inch long, with a head certainly four times the size of its body, and black aud ugly." It belongs te the genus Pheidole They are tramps of the tramp race, aud wander around at tacking everything, and are often dragged oft by their mero sprightly fellows. They live in the forests under the grass and scorn te be of no use te themselves or any one else. The Ecitens are another vaga bond race, though really Nimreds, always hunting and stepping at nothing. I ence saw a body of them attack a hive of bees in Guinea. The conflict was short. The bees dashed at them, but were caught and pulled te pieces, the little creatures being seemingly insensible te their stings. Re lated te these is a curious species totally blind. They construct a tunnel en the surface like moles ; but whether they have lest their eyesight from living in the dark or were originally blind it is haul te tell. The auts seem te stand next te man as regards intelligence, and have a language that is perfect in its requirements. If a tee approaches their nest, part will rush te the attack while ethers go te inform the rest, a certain number remaining te guard the pup;u. If the battle wages lierccly they are kept in formed, and the young are removed te the lowest recesses of the dwelling. Professer Litriclle removed the antenna from a number of auts aud released them, and their comrades were seen rubbiiur the parts with saliva. Seme persons even claim te have noticed a system of burial among them with curious rites. " The most wonderful authentic occur-' rence that has ever been noticed among them was a regular battle seen by Mr. Hubcr, of Geneva, and Mr. llauhart, f Basel. '1 he light was between an army of orewn ants mat nau two lulls, and a na tion of black auts that had live hills about forty feet from them. In the month of June they observed a movement in the hills of the brown ants. They marched out te the middle of an uncultivated lield, which was situated between them and their enemies, aud arranged themselves in a long, uninterrupted, eblique line of battle, which line was about twenty four feet long, and consisted of only one file. In the meantime, the much mere numerous, but much smaller black ants also marched out and arrayed themselves in a line of battle three ranks deep, their right wing being covered by a mass of several hundred, while their left wing was supported by almost a theusaud. Thus the two armies moved one against the ether until they approached each ether near enough te commence the fight, when the two masses which supported the wings formed obleug squares, from three te four inches wide, without taking part in the f affray. Then the battle began with fury, the jaws, stings and venom constituting their formidable, weapons ; and very seen mutilated bodies, heads and headless trunks, tern-out feet and legs "could le seen lying all ever that miniature battle ground. This was continued with great vigor till neon, wheu the massacre ceased, aud the remnant of the brown auts, as the victors, took possession of the fortresses of the enemy, carrying along with them their wounded fellow soldiers."
