LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCE!?. THURSDAY, JULY 21, 1881. Eaiuastc: irmrUigcucci TiuBSDAY EVENING, JULY 21, 1881. Farm and Garden. Timely Notes from tbe (Icrmanlewn Tel egraph." It is full time new for the second thin ninji out of the pears the fall and winter varieties. Yeu must net be afraid tore move every one that is defective or imper fect. These ,?rewinr in clusters of three and four should always have one or two taken off. We Lave never known yet where such is the case, that when allowed te ripen in such clusters they were net dwarf ed and net of the flavor of ethers growing singly or in twos. A cluster seems te di vide the growing power, and thus three or four will only receive what would go te one or two. One thing should always be remembered in pear-growing especially, that a knotted, twisted or wormy speci men is worthless, and te seme extent in jurious. Complaint is made that a number of farmers have been swindled by a sharper who has been selling packages supposed te contain a remedy that would cause every potato beetle it touches te die instantly. The directions en the outside caution the purchaser net te open the package until it is te be used, as exposure te the air would destroy the value of the contents. The very few persons who were willing te believe the sharper, feuud en opening the package that it contained two blocks of weed nicely enveloped in paper, and the " directions" were that by placing the beetles en one block and striking them quickly with the ether, they could be ra pidly exterminated ! Canker Worms. This is hew C. W. Palmer, of Menree county, N. Y., get rid of them en four hundred apple trees : "I took one barrel and a-balf of tar, warmed it in a tin pail with half rain water, and applied it about 4 o'clock in the afternoon with a large paint brush. I made a ring around the body of the tree, repeated it every day for thirty-ene days, having commenced en the 3d of April. " The habits of these destructive worms are peculiar. The miller that lays the egg for the worm commences coming out of the ground as seen as it begins te thaw in the spring and immediately crawls up the tree and lays its eggs in and en the buds, which hatch as seen as the lice be gins te leaf, when its work begins. These millers are hardly ever seen in in the day time, and they never climb the trce except at night. Frem a half teau hour after sundown they appear te pep out of the ground and start straight ler the tree. The female has no wings and gets stuck in the tar, and that is the end of it. " I had a man who tarred the four hun dred trees in about two hours ; some of the trees had been only four years set-out. The tiir was applied te the bark. Ne harm resulted from it te the trees, but the worms were completely exterminated. This was done some six years age. My trees had been stripped for live years of fruit and leaves, but net a canker-worm has been seen since." Our Ceuiiug AVme Crep. It is net improbable that in auelher de cade or two, judging from present pro gress, the United States will be the great est wine-producing country in the world. In all the states where grape-growing with this view has gained seme magnitude, there is a large and steady increase iu tlie quantity manufactured from year te year ; and with advancing experience in the amalgamation of the juices of different varieties of grapes, the quality of the wiue is much improved. According te the cen sus returns California alene produced last year 4,000,000 gallons, valued at 0,000, 000, while the vintage of Xcw Yerk, New Jersey, Ohie and Missouri, last year, nearly readied iu the aggregate this total. The entire quantity of wine imparled into the United States in 1SS0, from all ceun tries, amounted te the aggregate of only 4.000,000 gallons, valued at ?0, 000, 000, thawing a heavy reduction compared with many previous years. As a rule our domestic wines are much purer than the imported, aud a fargicater degree of cleanliness is observed iu their manufacture. A gentleman of this city, who was in the wine-producing districts of France seme time age, and saw the pre cess of making clarets, says that the juice is still expressed by tramping with the naked feet, aud that he saw some of these "tranipcrs" leave the vats iu which they were employed and cress a muddy read te get their dinner, without covering their 4eet, aud en their return jumped into the aain with the mud clinginjj te them ! We suppose they depended en the fermen tation throwing oil' all impurities ; but it is net reassuring te tuiuk about. The Culture of Water Cress. There is nothing mere easily ia:scd than water cress. An open spring el water or any premises-, which is allowed te spread and seme of the land te become somewhat swampy, will without any mere prepara tien abundantly p.educe water cress, if once introduced. In almost any neighbor hood where there is an open spring, the border of which lias net been disturbed, the plant can be grown. Gather them, cut them up into pieces se tuat each piece .shall have a little root no matter hew small and it will grew, aud while giving a geed supply, will spread from year te year if the ground is suitable ; and there will be no lurthcr trouble about it. We formerly raised it in our own gar den. A very sniaH'spring ran through it, which had been undisturbed for many years, and it grew there spontaneously, giving us all that the family needed. When improvements were introduced it had te give away ; but even then it made its appearance every spring for several years. A few years age we set plants around the beidcr of the fish pond and they giew readily. We desired it te shade the water for the benefit of the fish ; but le ! the fish ate all the tender sprouts, and what they left a pair of muskrats devour ed root and branch. All, therefore, that any one, who has a spring upon bis premises, has te de, is te intreduce the plants along the edges and wherever there is a low place into which the water from the spring'can spread and he will raise water cress according te' the extent of the arrangements which na ture provided. It is very appetizing for breakfast or tea, eaten with a little salt only ; and we are very sure tnat if it is once introduced it will never be abandon ed, either for private consumption or for marketing. This Brandy lias steed the test ler years, antl has never failed, as far as our experience extends, anil we therefore give it the preference ever an etner iirantiies nematlerwith hew many jaw-brcakingFrcnch titles they are branded. One-fourth of the money that is yearly thrown away en various impotent dyspepsia specifics weultl suffice te buy all the Brandy te cure any such case or as es. In proof of the curative powers et Reigart's Old Brandy, In cases of Dyspepsia, we can summon nuni bers of witnesses one case in particular we cite: A hard-working farmer hail been afflicted with an exhaustive Dyspepsia for a number of years; bis stomach would reject almost every kind of foed: he hail sour eructatiens con stantlyne appetite In fact, he was obliged te restrict his diet te crackers antl stale bread, and as a beverage he used McGrann'u Reet Beer. He is a Methodist, and then, as new, preached at times, and in his discourses often declaimed earnestly against all kinds of strong drink. When advised te trv Reigart's Old Brandy, In his case, lie looked up with astonishment, but after hearing et its wonderful eficcts In the cases of some of his near acquaintances, he at last consented te fellow our advice. He usctl the Brandy faithfully and steadily; the first bottle giving him an appetite, and before the second was taken he was a sound man,wi th a stomach capable of digesting anything which he'ehese te eat. He .still keeps it and uses a lit tle occasionally; and since he has this medi cine he has been of very little pecuniary bene fit te the doctor. A FRAcrisrau Physician. H. E.
