LANCASTER DAILY TNTFJJJGENCEK. MONDAY, JULY 18, 1881 lAnrastci fntrUigrnrcr. MONDAY EVENING, JULY 18, 1881. TOBACCO. THE NEW lOKK J1AUKU. freed Leal ana Ilavana Last Week. U. S. Tobacco Journal. Again a large packing of '80 Pcnsyl vania was purchased by a large cigar man ufacturiug Arm. Tiiis is auetber victory for that crop and another blew te Connec ticut and New Yerk state leaf. Nobody at all familiar with tobacco and the general condition of the '80 crop, can say that the '80 Pennsylvania is a geed crop. It has none of the merits or the '78 and '79 crops, but it has all their faults and mere. The '80 Connecticut and New Yerk state crops (Big Flats excepted) are excellent in quality and also, apparently, in yield. Nevertheless nearly all of the large manufacturers who se far have en tered the market as buyers have given them and most ether growths the cold shoulder and bought '80 Pennsylvania most eagerly. Had the manufacturers but taken small packings or small parts of large ones of the '80 Pennsylvania, no positive Ftandiug could be claimed for the crop. But as the purchases referred te have net been experimental, and iu many instances calculated te be a year's full supply by the manufacturers, by whom they wcre made all arguments and the ories go for naught. Disappointed holders of Connecticut predict most lamentable consequences as the result of this strange behavior of man ufacturers. They sce the hitter's destruc tion and ruin in it, and prophesy a tre mendous rush for their crop when the awakening comes. Fer our part we de net see anything discouraging te thcm, ner te holders of any of he ether sound 1880 crop, iu this preference for Pennsylvania. The real purchasing scaseu of '80 crops by the great mass of manufacturers aud job bers has net yet commenced, and as there is every chance that the next year's con cen con sumptien of leaf iu this country will be no less than from 17.1,000 te 200,000 cases (judging from the past few mouths' rate of consumption), and as the yield of the '80 crop can safely be estimated te have reached probably no mere than 225,000 cases, no uneasiness need he felt by hold ers of any of the sound '80 tobaccos. The sales for this week wcre as fellows : Pennsylvania Crep '80 ; 800 cases, re ported te be at 1G te 17 cents. Crep '79 ; 700 cases, wrappers, 43 ceni ; fine running, 24 cents. The Philadelphia Market. Tobacco Lent. Seed Leaf As usual at this scaseu of the year, trade is moderate ; iu fact, hold ers as well as buyers prefer te drop the aires ei business ler the present and spend a few days at the seaside, a luxury very generally dealt iu by leaf dealers ; they seem te knew hew te care for their health and at the same time enjoy life. It may be possible that their balance sheets re mere favorable for such amusements at the end of the year ; if it is net se, it should be. Price of stock holds steady. Ileceipts for the week : 81S cases Con necticut, 184 cases Pennsylvania, 41 eases Ohie, 73 cases Wisconsin, 104 bales Havana and C81 hhds of Virginia and Western leaf tobacco. A number of the members of the Society of friends in New Garden township, Ches ter county, made arrangements te put iu a crop of tobacco this year. This coming te the cars of the heads of the meeting in that township the matter was discussed, which resuueu in me would-be growers being brought before the proper author ities of the society and notified that it was against the discipline te grew the weed, as it was considered te be injurious te morals and health.
