LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER, THURSDAY, JULY 14, 1881. Lancaster Intelligencer. THURSDAY EVENING, JULY 14, 1881. The Use or Salt in Wheal-Urewlng. Cermantewn Telegraph. As we shall seen be thinking of getting the land ready for seeding, it may net be out of place te say a few words en the use of salt in its application te the wheat crop. We knew hew it is with the anU mal world. A vcrv little salt is te most persons ouite asrceable. In a wild state I animals will wander great distances te the salt licks te get a taste of the saline ar ticle, atid all our domestic animals seem te enjoy it new and then. Most if net all plants contain a-Iittlc of it, and these ani mals which de net take it in its distinct condition, take it into their systems through the plants they eat. In excess it is :i great injury. Everybody knows this. It is just the same with plants. In proper proportions it is a benefit te vege tation. In excess it is one of the most dangerous articles we can apply. It is te be regretted that mere is net known about this subject. Seme plants can tike up :i large amount of salt with positive benefit, ethers arc satisfied with the veriest pinch, yet no one knows exactly what these plants arc. Indeed, judging from the teachings from quite in telligent quarters, there seems te be no recognition of this vast difference. We sec papers en " salt," as if it could be used alike for all things, and yet there arc numbeiless things which even salt cannot save. True, some exception te this whole sale and indefinite recommendation of the use of salt is sometimes made in the case of asparagus. This we are told is especially agreeable- te that plant : but we seldom sec any special plant named besides this in the connection. It would be well worth while, we think, for these agricultural col leges which are engaged in the excellent work of experimenting, te go into this subject, and find out for us what it would de us se much geed te knew. It might possibly be that wonderful results little dreamed of new would result from such experiments. The quince is very much benefited by the use of salt, and from a case of which we knew, we arc much in clined te believe that similar excellent re sults would fellow its use with the plum. As it is, the plum is net a success. The least injury rots it in warm climates. But as te the wheat crop, it is certainly a valuable aid in all light and dry soils, if net evei done. Exactly hew much te put en it is impossible te say, as the quantity advantageous will vary with the soil. It is best te find out by care by at first un dergoing it what the land will stand. A bushel te an acre will be enough for a first expei intent, te be sewu with or at the time of sewing the seed. That will de some geed and no harm, and one can build en this in futuic after seeing hew it weiks. Even as a " steep " it is cial. A weak solution of seed-wheat destroys the found benefi salt for the smut spores which generally "lemni. 'e with the seed te the The Aliitell Kiss a Hellew Mockery. Three Horses Abreast. The American express company has in troduced into Xc.v Yerk the system of harnessing th:ee horses abreast, after the fashion of Londen omnibuses. The change has been made en two of the wagons ler an experiment, with very satisfactory le sults. The wagons are supplied with two poles instead of one, and each of the three horses is attached teaseparate whilllctrec. This is found te le a decided improvement ever the system sometimes used of putting one horse in shafts and another at each side. The harnessing is practicajly the same as with two horses, with two poles instead of one. The expericment is tried upon the wagons that deliver goods in the upper pait of that city, net only because the leads are fjequently tee heavy for two her-es, but te enable the drivers te make up for lest time with an increased rate of speed, when from any cause they are de layed at the start.
