The Peculiar Beverage Pretcribed for the President. A medicinal beverage hitherto compara tively unknown outside of medical circles in this country has been employed in alle viating the .thirst of the sick president since Tuesday morning. On the preceding afternoon Mr. Geerge L Mckelway, the apothecary of Chestnut street above Bread, Philadelphia, received a telegram from tue wniie nuuse wguw uj , Hawkes, tutor te the president's children, inquirin" whether he could furnish a sup ply of ""Koumiss" for Mr. Garfield's use. A reply in the affirmative was followed by a telegram fiem Colonel Rockwell, re questing that a quantity of the beverage should be sent at once. Accordingly a special messenger was sent te Wash ington with five quart bottles solidly packed in ice, and a telegram conveying the thanks or the physicians was received from Cel. Rockwell. In Tar tary where " Koumiss " is the favorite beverage of the natives, it is made from mare's milk. This article, however, net being obtainable hereabouts, ordinary cow's milk takes its place. It is ferment ed by the aid of yeast and sugar highly charged with carbonic acid gas, and then bottled for use. Three days arc required te bring it te a proper stage of fermentation. It is a very agrerable drink, having a slightly acid taste, and contains from 3 te 4 per cent, of alcohol and 1 te 2 per cent of lactic acid. If exposed for a short time te the air it becomes sour and unfit for use It difiers from whey in containing nutiitive constituents of milk, and from milk itself that it is an effervescing alco holic fiuid. Between twenty-five and thirty quarts of the beverage are daily sent out of the Chestnut street laboratory en physicians' prescriptions. Before Mr. McKclway learned the secret of its preparation it was made exclusively by a Russian, whose fixed price was $1 per quart. At the present time three bottles are obtainable at that figure. The merits and effects of " Kou miss" have bceifclescly tested and studied by many prominent medical men in Phil adelphia, among them being Dr. Wm. Pep per, provost of the university, Dr. Bar- tliolew ana Ur. lloiiiugswertn mem. if v. Pepper instances acase of a sailor who was a patient in the university hospital suffering from pelyuria. At the time of his dismissien he passed ten pints of urine a day. He was put en an exclusive diet of "Koumiss," one quart being given every tweu'y-feur hours, and in seven days the urine had diminished te ene piut eleven ounces and the patient was able te take solid feed. Dr. Barthelow, who says that it possesses great value in the treatment of phthisis, chronic bronchitis, low stages of fever, and all adynamic states in which the combined effects of alcohol and nutri ents are desirable, quotes Jagielsky, an eminent Russiau physician as saying that he ' had patients gain as much as ten pounds a month when no ether feed was taken." The value of the beverage te the president lies in the fact that, while in his present condition he cannot digest milk for which he has a craving, he is able te take " Koumiss," which answers every purpose of the physicians with perfect sccess, while it allays the thirst much bet ter than milk. It also has a beneficial effect upon the liver and kidneys. - m am m Ne Such Werd as Fall.
