LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCE. MbNDAY, JUNE 2U, 1881. cirasuet intelligencer. WO.. MONDAY EVENING, JUNE 20, 1881. TOBACCO. SEED LKAF ASD HAVANA. Last Week's New Yerk Observations. Journal. An excellent spirit prevails, though transactions in new leaf were net as num erous as during the week previous. The hales of '80 Pennsylvania number 1,000 rases, at nriccs varying from 1G te 19 cents. About 1,000 cases of '80 Wiscon sin, Havana seed, were albe sold, mostly te one larfec city cigar manufacturing firm. In old tobacco .we note sales of about 1C00 cases, mostly 79 Pennsylvania, at 18 te 23 cents ; fillers 8 cents. The prospects of a quick and profitable business in '80 tobacco continues. Havana Market moderately active. Sales 700 bales, partly '79, partly '80, at former figures. Trade Nete. L?al. The general impression is that the best sale of the season was made the ether day by Mr. Ililke te the lire insuraucc cerapaj Dies. Mr. Fred. Schulz took his departure for Lancaster en Tuesday, whither he gees te purchase tobacco that he may chance te find which comes up te his idea of fine goods. He will be absent for two weeks or thereabouts. The young and wide-awake firm of Messrs. Spear & Held made a hit and new held a full hand. We refer te their pur chases of COO cases choice 1880 Pennsylva nia from Messrs. A. S. Hescnbaum is Ce. Mr. Carl Upmauu bought of Messrs. C. II. Spitzner & Sen, 1,000 cases of the new crop of Pennsylvania tobacco at private terms. This let of tobacco was. the Lan caster county packing of Mr. IL II. liru bakcr, and is, presumably, designed for expert. Philadelphia seed leaf market : Dealers claim the past week's business was far be yond expectation. Mere goods have been sold than usual for the season. One of our large houses rcpart a wil-- of 123 cases te a neighboring city dealer of Penn sylvania 1879 crop at full quotations;, after the buyer had visited the East end made a thorough examination. Pennsylvunia 1S80 is reported much better in cases than con templated, hence packers feel very much encouraged. (lacs' Repert. Sales of seed leaf tobacco' re poi ted by J. S. Total, 4,318 cases. Gunnlug for Greene. The Tobacco Journal is very severe en Dr. Greene, of this city, who was reported by the Examiner as having said in the Ag ricultural society at its last meeting that " nearly all the buyers were Shylocks and frauds, whose sole aim was te cheat the sellers. He came in contact with some of them at the Stevens house, and he knew i:et a few would steal his pocket-book if they get a chance. He was in favor of establishing a brokerage in this city, where samples of tobacco should be exhibited." A correspondent, writing te the Journal, defends the tobacco buyers as a class and speaks of Grcene as "an antiquated quack and traveling pill peddler, who has smug gled himself in as a member," " of an association styled the Agricnltur.il and Horticultural society of Lancaster (who held their meulhly meetings whenever an attendance of a dozen crsens, inclusive of newspaper reporters, can be gathered together)." " Editorially the Journal g.cs for the doctor in ths awfully sarcastic style : " Oh, doctor, doctor, doctor ! a pocket book ! Why, you bungling wretch, wc wc knew of one of the dealers you refer te from New Yerk who would steal ten thousand million pocketbooks, if he could. He would steal the very wart off your uose if it had net grown there ! (Remember, warts, when full grown and carefully dis tributed in a case of leaf, help its fermen tation wonderfully.) Yeu are a coward, doctor. Yeu aic slinging around bitter accusations against a body of merchants and carefully avoid the giviug of a single name. Whom de you mean by a beat and a cheat.1 Wc hope net A. S. Hescnbaum, of Water street, New Yerk ; because if you were te dare te besmear the name of this illustri ous personage, if you were but te allude by a gesture that he would, or ever did, beat and cheat, or de anything else charit ably, wc would have you killed and your body thrown te the editors of the Lancas ter Intelligencer. Arc you a man or a doctor? Shame upon you, vile dclamcr of virtue, industry aud tobacco ! Yeu are stabbing in the dark, miserable Mameluke. Yeu terribly denounced one of the best of New Yerk's leaf tobacco buyers. In your company there was seen before you made your dreadful accusation Charles William Spitzncr, of this city. Unblemished has been his name se far, aud Water street has taken pride in him Yeu ripped asunder the reputation of this geed man aud true, aud stripped him of the pleasures of this life. Your pockctbeok would be te him what a drop is te an ocean ! Away with you, unreasonable whelp ! " As we go te press the following dis patches reach us 1'ieiu Lancaster : " ' Mr. Vigcliusjef "the New Yerk leaf firm of Haveymer & Vigc!iu has finished purchasing leaf here, and left by an early train. The pro prietor of the Stevens Ilense has just ledged a complaint with the police that he has lest within the past few days, a deg cellar and several packages of matches and a bar of shaving soap." " At a meeting of tobacco growers held here last night, Fred. Mumpitz, of Salonga, who had visited the rooms of the New Yerk Leaf tobacco beard of trade while a meeting was going en, offered the following regulations : i phat the New Yerk Leaf tobacco beard of trade be requested te hang out a sign, upeu which the following be plain ly inscribed : He who enters here Will leave his pecked-book behind.'
