LANCASTER DAILY IKfELLIGENCfeR. FRIDAY,, JUNE 17, 1881. acamt intelligencer. twt FBIDAY EVBOTNO, JUNE 17, 1881. Sheep HastaRirr la Ylrgnla. Mr. Richard McCay, one of the most successful fanners and stock-raisers of Warren county, Va,, in a letter te the editor of the Warren Sentinel, writes : Having premised te give you the result of this year's sheep clip, it affords me pleasure te communicate the following : One hundred and twenty-two fleeces of all kinds averaged 5 pounds te the fleece. We had some native sheep that sheared less than 3 and several did net reach 4 pounds, which reduced the average of one-half and three-fourths Leicester many of which went ever G pounds. Native and grade Lcicesters averaged 4 pounds 10 ounces ; high grade and full Lcicesters averatred 8 pounds, while - the. popular Southdown only reached 5 pounds te the fleece. " I am somewhat disappointed at the general outcome, as I had heavier fleeces in etuer years, wiicn me very severe winter is remembered, with time of yean ing a number of lambs, it is net te be wondered that fleeces arc net heavy. Feed was utilized in sustaining animal heat instead of growing wool te an extent that a milder winter would n6t have called. We averaged two lambs each day from January 1 te March 1 I am glad te say they were living lambs. We have raised 126 lambs from 104 ewes. One Leicester ewe, from which we have living triplets, clipped 8 pounds and 11 ounces of lustrous combing wool. " We lest only three sheep during the winter, which proves that Leicester sheep, if sheltered as all sheep ought te be, are among the most hardy and prolific. Why should they net de well? We have the same character of limestone hills and sweet herbage upon which they thrive in their native England. I am satisfied from years of close attention te the subject that no variety of sheep is mere profitable for the valley farmer than the Leicester. If they de net fatten their lambs quite as rapidly as the Southdown, they have the ad vantage of finer limbs and smaller heads in short, (like the short horn among cat tle), the least amount of offal te a given weight of meat They are models of gen tleness for all kinds of sheep ; they bear nlicA Irnenintr m trail as nnv. n.nd thev arc superior te the Southdown, with mc at, least, in every respect except as mutton. "As shown by the above figures, the Leicester clips ever 50 percent, mere than the Southdown. I keep the Southdown for early Iambs, as bttchers like the black faces, but I would net advise the practical farmer te take into general use a sheep that produces 6e little wool. I will retain the Leicester until I find a mere profitable sheep. " Of late years the Cotswold has super-' seded the Leicester iu inipreviug native sheep te a large extent. Where a farmer has a large range te enable him te mature wethers, the Cotswold is doubtless a use ful animal, but for early maturing lambs Leicester and Southdown, or cresses of these breeds, will be found preferable. "As accessible as the peeple of Warren and the Shenandoah Valley generally are te Eastern markets, selling Iambs at from three te five months old will be found in the main a proiitable business. Bad win -tcrs such as we have just passed through will sometimes take the profit away, but no business is exempt from its casualties. If the number of lambs we raised, with the temperature at times 27 degrees below zero, "will stimulate fleck owners te erect sheds or winter protection, I will be mere than repaid for writing you this letter." Fatal Sheeting Affair. The strike which has baen in progress at the Dispatch office in Pittsburgh, for the past two weeks, culminated early yesterday morning iu a sheeting affray, which will probably result in the death of Martin Corcoran, one of the strikers. On Monday afternoon the proprietors of the Dispatch had a conference with all their old hands, and a decision was arirved at that the proprietors should retain such of the new hands, net mere than four or five in number, as they might select, while unobjectionable men of the old force, te the number stated should be retained. This was auneunccd te the new force, and the fear being entertained that they would quit work in a body, the old foreman was in structed te have all his men within calling distance, se that the paper could be is sued. About two o'clock yesterday morning a young mau named McCahill, a member of the new force, wcut into a restaurant ad joining the Dupatch elliee and ordered a lunch. When he wcut in Corcoran eyed him closely, and waited around uutil he came out. The parties met en the side walk, when Corcoran struck at McCahill with a billy, inflicting a painful wound en the side of the head. McCahill then drew a revolver and fired two shots, one taking effect in Coreerau's abdomen aud the ether striking Alexander McWilliams, foreman of the old force, who had attempted te prevent further trouble, in the left hand. Coreerau's injuries arc of such a serious nature that he will hardly recover, while peacemaker' McWilliams had the small bones of his hand shattered, and will be incapaciatcd for work for some week?. McCahill has beeu committed te jail te await the result of Corcoran's injuries. Doctors Gave Him Up. "lsitpessiblctli.it Mr. Godfrey i- up and at work, and cured by se simple a remedy ?"
