LANCASTER tAlXX -ENTEIJ JgMR SATURDAY, JUNE 4, 1881. icaster intelligencer. -ir-M SATURDAY STONING, JUNK A, 1881. Hack. Tfae American Agriculturist says an aero of .swamp muck of geed quality, three feet deep, is actually worth $25,000. Ne deabtsach abatement lis surprising. Se was the statement of Dr. Lawes, of England, that a ten of bran fed te cows returned mere than its cost in manure. The best muck, free from sand, contains two per cent, or forty pounds of nitrogen in a ten. Nitrogen is worth in the mar ket twenty-five cents per pound, se that a ten of swamp muck is worth $30 for the nitrogen in it. All that is needed is te work up the muck, se as te make the nitrogen available. An acre of swamp muck three feet deep contains 2,500 tens, and would require eight months te draw out at ten leads a day. Few persons realize the value of the fertilizing element of common waste matters which lie under their feet, and the innumerable tens of matter that may be available for fertil fertil izingpurpe3cs, or that many of the idle and neglected materials represent a vast amount of wealth. But it must be re membered that all swamp muck cannot be classed as of geed quality some of it is next deer te worthless. m Ah Eej te Slagiag Birds. Manchester Mirror. The crew is extcrminatinsr the singing birds of New England. Few are the nests that escape bis vigilant search, and fewer still the young birds that de net go te satisfy his ravenous appetite auu uu his capacious maw. I have watched and cursed them for years. I have seen them pounce upon the nest of the lark and of the plover ; I have seen them leaving the nests of the robin with the yeuug in their beaks. Fer several years I have watched the return of a pair of robins te an old apple tree near my house, where tbey had built their nest and reared their young. One morning I heard the piercing cry of the old birds, foreboding danger and distress. I ran te the window just in time te see a crew fly from the tree with a yeuug robin in his mouth. In less than five minutes the crew returned, dived into the tree, and this time the last of my four half-grown pet robins was borne away. m Leese Ideas er the Area or Lands. Rev. W. II. II. Murray in Bosten Herald. Men talk of 20,000, 40,000 and 50,000 acres of land without any realization of the extent of such an acreage.- I visited the ether day a ranch of 20,000 acres. I intended te make a thorough survey of it that is, te ride round it aud ride across it. I made my survey, but when I learned that the fence which enclosed it was ever seventy miles in length I concluded that I would inspect it by sections. I did con siderable ritlinc in two days, nevertheless. but I didn't ride around it. On the ranch there were 1,500 acres all under the plough, one bit of land, nearly as level as a fleer, a paralcllegram in shape, and the furrow which the plow cut in traversing from one end te the ether, was three miles in a straight Hue. It is only after one lias visited such an estate and devoted days in riding ever it that he realizes what 20,000 acres of land is. m m Geed Words for Free Libraries. An efrurt is being made in Montreal te secure the establishment of a free public library, and, as an aid te the cause, the Star of that city publishes correspondence with Henry W, Longfellow and Oliver Wendell Helmes. Mr. Longfellow writes that he has a strong conviction of the use fulness "of free public libraries in placing within the reach of all one means of educa tion which, without them, must necessarily be limited te the mere fortunate few." Mr. Helmes says when "a free public library is once fairly begun, it becomes mere and mere valuable every year, as a matter of course, for it grows Iike a rolls ing snowball." Mr Helmes further declares that "such a library is as necessary te a town as a nest is te a pair of birds, as scholars are sure te be hatched in it sooner or later." LANCASTER UOL'SKHOLO MARKET. SHALL WE -oe- Tbcre is in Philadelphia a clothing house which has no denble in all the world. The world is fall of clothing houses ; and it is a geed deal te say that ene is unlike all the rest. First, in its dealing ; and it is surprising that one house should differ much from another. Selling clothing is se simple a matter, that it is likely, one would suppose, te be done in very much the same way in Philadelphia, New Yerk and Londen. But Philadelphia is ahead ; and, curiously enough, ene house in Philadelphia is ahead of all the rest. Te be ahead in dealing is te deal en a higher plane in a' mere liberal way, te give the buyer mere well founded confidence without less of the merchant's safety. This Philadelwhia clothing house says te a stranger : " We want te deal with exact justice We want what belongs te us, viz., a feir profit ; and we want you te have what belongs te you, viz., a liberal money's-worth. Our way te arrive at a result is te mark the price en everything we sell, which price is absolute ; aud te let you buy what you like, go away and think the bargain ever, and come and trade back, if you want te. We find by '" experi ence that this liberality is harmless te us. Of course, you like it. And it makes quick and ready dealing. We don't want you te bring back-what you buy it would cost us money every time ; but we would rather you would bring back, than keep, what you don't like. Se, we try te see that you get at first what you will like the better, the mere you knew of it. This is really the whole philosophy of our dealing." Second, iu its goods the amount and variety of them. There are ether houses where excellent clothing is kept, and a great deal of it ; but' there is none, anywhere, that keeps se much. The dealing related above has! wen the largest trade the world has yet seen. Te supply such a trade great quantity and variety of clothing are required ; and these in turn increase the trade, be cause everybody likes te choeso out of many things, rather than out of a few. This is the country of ready-made clothing. Great Britain makes the most of any European country; but there is net in all Londen any clothing busi ness a quarter as large as that of Oak Hall. New Yerk has several large clothing businesses; but no one nearly equal te that of Oak Hall ; Bosten likewise. Loek back twenty years ! Have we done you geed service, or net?
