HAY 28, 188L THE CANADA DISASTER. A WHOLE CITV IN MOUKN1NO. Twelve Score of Urn Lest. The terrible calamity near Londen, Ont., has put nearly every household of that city into mourning. It is believed new that in the aggregate 241 persons were drowned. Leng before the identification of all the 170 bodies recovered up te last night their decomposition, from the het sun shining en their upturned faces, ren dered necessary their removal te a drill shed. Investigation shows gross careless ness in overloading the beat ; and reck less jollity among the passengers, lead ing te the rush of the crowd ana weight from one side of the deck 'te the ether. When the pressure caused the supports of the upper deck te give way the people tumbled in hundreds headlong into the water thirteen feet deep, 'and te make the terror mere tcrrible the whole of the upper deck and supports went crash ing down upon the wretched victims, tear ing and bruising the struggling people, who thus became cooped as it wcre be tween two deaths. The river is usually high just new, being swollen by recent rains ; and where the disaster occurred the current runs swift and black at .all times. The mist of escaping steam in tensified the confusion. Oue man was nearing the bank, with a child under each arm, when a woman clutched at him ami the four sank. A woman with a babe at her breast clung te it and was being hauled ashore by a sturdy swimmer when a falling beam killed the infant and the river swallowed it. 'Anether woman twice lest and twice recovered her boy. At midnight when the bodies were recovered they were laid out in rows en the grass by the river side, all in their holiday attire, and with the aid of torches their faces were eagerly scanned by hundreds of anx ious friends who were looking for their missing ones. Wails of sorrow followed recognitions; and when all hopes of safety for friends ended in despair many surviv ors were with difficulty restrained front burying themselves in the black flood. Detail r Ui Disaster. Londen, Ont., May 26. The number of passengers en beard the Victeria at the time of the disaster's new estimated at 700 a burden out of all proportion te the strength and capacity of the vessel. Shortly after passiug Woodland cemetery and when the boatbegaute rock the crowd surged from one side te the ether with each oscillation, rather enjoying the motion. Instead of being in any way alarmed ene of the passengers stated that a number of youths en the upper deck took delight iu keeping up the rocking motion by moving from side te side while ethers shouted gleefully: "Let her sink we'll only have te wade ashore." It is said by some, though denied by ethers, that the officers in charge endeavored te induce the passcu gers te remain quiet, but their efforts were unavailing. The crowd surged from side te side and with each movementthc vessel took in an increasing amount of water en the lower deck, te the terror of some and the delight of many mere. Of these below few seemed te foresce danger. Suddenly the position became alarming. When nearly opposite Cove Bridge, the water te the depth of a feet or mere rushed in en the south side of the beat, and the crowd surged again te the north, the beat slowly following the movement by tilting ever te that side. This time the vessel almost turned en Jier edge, and the deck fleer because elevated te an angle net far from the perpendicular. All at ence the supports of the upper deck gave way with a terrible crash en account of the un natural position and the great weight im posed ever the railings. The people tumbled in hundreds headlong into the deep water, and te make the terror mere terrible the whole of the tipper deck and supports went crashing down upon the wretched victims, tearing and bruising the strug gling mass and engulfing them in a dread ful watery tomb. Many of the bodies, when they were afterwards taken from the water, were found te be terribly bruised and mangled from the crash of timber which came down from the upper deck, and in many cases the features bore evidence of the desperate struggle which must have taken place. A visit te the scene shows the Victeria te be a complete wreck, the illy-censtruct cd vessel being literally broken into pieces. It is said en geed authority that her boiler was net properly secured te the deck and that it shifted with the rocking of the beat. Hardly any portion of the vessel is visible above water. The Death of Colonel Scott. Cel. Ferney's Progress. Is it then true that the best beloved, or these who have wrought most for man, or have filled the world with the hale of the brightest deeds, die early ? Net te in elude the sacrifice of our Saviour in his prime, Byren died at thirty-seven, Napo Nape leon at fifty-two, Shakspeare at fifty-two, Cervantes at fifty-two, Raphael at thirty seven, the younger Pitt at forty-seven, Stephen A. Douglas at forty-eight ; but, among all these, even if we swell the cata logue by adding the names of elder and greater minat, were is net onewue, m fifty-seven years of experience, aided mere individual men and women, or helped for ward great enterprises with a mere fervid zeal or a sublimer usefulness than Themas A. Scott. Meulded in a form of almost matchless manly beauty, he was ytedwith qualities of singular fascination. Nature rarely adds te gifts of person, and charm et raauner, the jewels of euereslt v. The glory of a bright face is seldom reflected from the inner geld of a noble heart. We are trained te see fortune showered upon men who use it only te hele themselves. tt is a sight as common as clay te witness wealth conferred upon these who employ It te make their natural vulgarity mere coarse. But here wasa supreme exception. Themas A. Scott, born peer, lived te assist the peer. His education wasau inspira tion. He acquired knowledge by intuition. He graduated into manners as a second nature. He was a genius without the aid of schools. His books were men. His wisdom, the experience of a life of marvels His courage was as native as the air he breathed. Ne problem was tee weighty for the alembic of his brain. Ne crisis was tee dark for his clear perception. He was a master by common consent. He fell into leadership, net by assumption, but by acquiescence. Men loved te fellow the mind that was born te lead. It was a pleasure te obey a man who felt no fetters in supremacy. Above all his splendid powers Themas A. Scott never forget the rights and wrongs of ethers. He knew what it was te be peer and se elevated the peer, no gathered money into his hands with the same case with which he scat tered it among ethers. He was a Demo crat always, because he loved his whole country. He was never a partisan, because he loved men of all parties. He was as bold as a lien, because cowaidice is uet in the armory of the philanthropist. Forty years of association with him, from his seventeenth te his fifty-seventh year have made these iud.,ments of his character the convictions of my life. Themas A. Scott wrote his epitaph iu a life of phenomenal success and unsellisL ncss, and the sorrow ever his tee early death will be painfully sincere, because his departure is a personal less te thousands He is the one man of whom it may be said, that he served mere iudiciduul men and women than any remembered human be ing. There is net a household in which he was well-known that has net an altar of gratitude te his name. Hn was a great tigure in large enterprises. Hern in hum ble life, he survived te cover a continent, with his capacious genius. Unlike mast conquerors, his victories wcre nil peaceful. His benevolence was net a question of ag gregates. He loved te aid humanity in detail. He was as quick te comprehend a great danger as he was te correct a small one. JtAKKETX. New Yarn Market. N . w YeHK.Mnyj;.
