"?! LANCASTER DAILY lOTElilGENtfER, MONDAY, MAY 2. 1881. -.1- iUncastct fnteftiflencct. MONDAY BVBNCTO, MAY 2, 1S81. Leaf Tebtcce. Tba New Yerk Market. Uuitea States Tobacco JeurnaL Fourteen hundred cases of '80 New Yerk state, 300 cases of '80 Pennsylvania, and 200 cases of '80 Connecticut seconds, are reported sold by one firm. The state and Pennsylvania were bought by a prominent manufacturer, while the purchaser of the Connecticut seconds was a jobber. Te none of these sales should any importance be attached. They were forced sales, as far as we are informed, te close out the packings of '80 tobaccos .of the firm pre vious te the retirement from business of one of its members and his departure te Europe. Neither are these sales indica tive of extraordinary qualities in the '80 Mate, Pennsylvania or Connecticut. Fer offerings of this kind and in this shape buyers can always be found, especially when the prices arc low enough. 1 hat the prices were low we are assured by one wne knows what figures were paid. Neverthe less, we repeat our assertion of two weeks age, that transfers of packings of '80 crops will take place unusually seen; and judging from the scarcity of goe4 old wrappers in the market at this comparatively early period, moneyed cigar manufacturers and jobbers will keep a sharp leek-out for all tine packings of '80 that may possibly be offered seen. Te say that this is judicious or injudicious, would be felly. We con sider all crop estimates imaginary. Most glaringly this was shown by the yield of the '79 crop. With bnt the shadow of an expert bufai nes8, our markets are bare of geed tobac cos ; nothing but small quantities of '79 stocks are te be had. The '80 crop is talk ed of as being immensely larger in yield than the '79 crop. There is no authority te upheld it, however. This much is cer tainthat the past severe and prolonged winter has injured a great deal of tobacco. Therefore we advise our readers te use all possible caution in making early pur chases of packings of '80 tobacco, and net allow themselves' te be guided by reports or- rumors regarding crops. If they see for themselves and abandon all notions regarding the section where the tobacco was grown, and if they buy subject tore tere samplingat the time of accepting the goods, their early buying of packings will be at least legitimate commercial ven tures. In '79 tobacco but a small business was done. Helders of '79 Pennsylvania arc stiff; 22 J te 28 cents for se-called line run ning is the market figure. Even low goods of the '79 Pennsylvania crop are be coming very scarce. At the rate it is leav ing the market, manufacturers and job bers will have te fall back en the neglected balauce of the '79 Connecticut. This stock can be bought low new, and specu specu specu latorssheuld give it attention. The entire sates of '79 tobaccos may be summed up as 1,100 cases, mostly Pennsylvania. Prices of all old stock remain as quoted iu last week's edition. As we go te press a bona lido sale of 300 cases of '80 Wisconsin, Havana seed, is reported. Havana Market active. Sales 900 bales, nearly all '79 stock. Price un changed. The Philadelphia. Market. Lent. Demand of old leaf continues excellent, especially for old Pennsylvania. Dealers new claim that the only difficulty they have is te find geed old feteck at desirable prices. Buyers are daily en the market ; stock of the right kind is all that is needed. Packers are freely buying of new leaf. Important te Cigar Manufacturers. The following change of regulation in regard te the removal of cigar factories has just been promulgated 1y the commis sioner of internal revenue : "It will net be necessary hereafter te apply te the commissioner for permission te remove cigar factories, including unstamped cigars Collectors arc hereby authorized te grant permission te cigar manufacturers te re move their facteiies under existing rules and regulations, reporting promptly every such removal te the commissioner of in ternal revenue. Inasmuch as such a re moval, if made without the written con sent of the makers of the bend of the cigar manufacturer, might relieve them from any liability for the payment of the tax en the cigars se removed, and from further Mobility- at the new place of busi ness, the utmost care will be taken by the collector te secure a strict compliance with the regulations."
