Philadelphia, April 19. Argument
apen tbe application te the United States
circuit court for recognition of Frank S.
Bend and ethers, as tbe legally
elected officers of tbe Philadelphia &
Beading railroad company, took place to
day before. Judges McKennan and Butler.
At its conclusion Judge McKennan stated
that it was the inflexible purpose of the
court net te be mixed up in any contro
versy regarding tbe officers of tbe com
pany. But as a highly respected court
had adjudged certain persons elected as
president and managers of the corporation
proper te respect for its decision required
that the persons in question should
net be debarred from enjoying tbe. privi
leges ana performing tue l unctiens el tbe
offices te which they claimed te be en
titled, but the court did net intend te ex
clude the persons new serving as officers
and managers from enjoying similar privi
leges pending final decision of the court of
proper jurisdiction.
The following order was made :
"And new, te wit, April 19, 1881, the
court orders and directs that the receivers
heretofore appointed by this court
in tbe above causes furnish te Messrs.

functions of the offices te which they claim
under the order of tbe court of common
pleas te have been elected in the Philadel

also te permit the above named persons te
examine, inspect and have free access
te all the books and papers of
tbe said Philadelphia & Reading
railroad in the possession and under
the control of said receivers ; the
said leceivcrs net excluding or in any
wise interfering with the enjoyment by

te Frank S. Bend and bis associates."

LOGAN'S LOYALTY.
Vigorously Defenuing It en the Senate Fleer.
Washington, April 19. In the Senate
te-day the usual motion te go into execu
tive session was lest aud the trenite took
up regular business, namely, the reselu -tien
for election, etc. Mr. Legan is new
en the fleer making a speech in
refutation of the charges which have
been made aud which he characterized
as slanders, that he at any time sympa
thized with secession. He read in support
of his denial of the charges a letter which
he had received from Senators Lamar and
Pugb, who served with him in Congress
at the outbreak of the war, beariug tcs tcs
timeng te his (Legan's) loyalty te the
Union at that time. He also quoted
from speeches made by him te show his
opposition te secession and challenged
anybody te show any speech in which be
bad upekld tbe rebellion. He denied ex

raised a company te join the rebels, and
read letters te prove that these charges
were absolutely false.
