Wulter Darlington la Country Gentleman. In the Western states, where land is worth from 820 te 830 per acre, and corn can be raised profitably at 20 cents per bushel, I think the present plan of allow ing tbe corn te mature, and feeding the ears te hogs and the stalks and leaves te cattle, will pay better than ensilaging the corn when in tassel. Bat in Eastern Pennsylvania, where geed land brings $100 te $200 per acre, according te distance from great markets, and where the soil system is practiced in order te keep one cow te each acre of arable land, and where geed butter brings from 40 te 50 cents per pound in winter, and 23 te 30 cdnts in .summer, it seems te me that ensilage is the most economical cow loed. I have the " ensilage fever", this Kpring; last spring I had an ' attack of the root fever, but I am cured of that. I planted au aero with suirar beets, but only about a pound of seed came up. I suppose I had at the rate of ten tens of beets te the acre. I fed the two tens I raised in five days, giving thiity pounds te a feed, and decreased the regular ration of cut cornfedder from two heaped basketful te one per day, and fed as usual eight quarts of bran and two quarts of cotton seed per day. My cows did net increase any in their flew of milk by the change of feed, and 1 am convmceu tliat 1 can raise one basketful of sewed oern cheaper and en less land than 1 can sixty pounds of beets. I am also convinced that it would be better te keep the corn in a green state than te dry it. One hundred tens have been kept green in a silo this winter by Enes Barnard, one of my neighbors. He is new feeding it te 70 of his 150 milch cows, and the mau who feeds and tends te the cows, says they like ensilage better than any ether feed, and are thriving well upeu it. Mr. Barnard informed his butter buyer when he com menced the feeding of ensilage, and re quested him te test thoroughly the quality of the butter, and inform him if the but ter was net up te the standard ; but he has received no word, and still gets 43 cents per pound wholesale. When a man like Mr. Crezicr, who receives 815 apiece for shepherd pups, and 820 te 8100 for calves and yearlings, and who .-c-nds away whole carloads of high priced cattle, talks about the expanse of a silo, it strikes me as bordering en the ludicrous. I propose te build a silo this summer -10 feet long, 20 feet wide and 14 feet deep ; the walls will contain about 100 perches, and a mason will build it for 50 cents a perch. My hired man will dig the pit with a little assistance, and I have the stone and most of the lumber that will be required. I think 8100 will build a silo that will held 200 tens of corn fodder, which I expect te raise en 7 acres of geed corn land. I have net charged 50 cents a lead for the stone, or 830 a month for my hired man and $2 a day for my team ; but I have the team and man, and net work enough te keep them and myself busy un less 1 grew roots. I would like te knew where there is a farmer who would net lese 81,000 a year if he charged such ex orbitant rates for his labor and the use of his team, as some of the writers calculate when trying te ruu up the cost of a silo. I think by buying from $300 te $400 wei th of grain a year and adopting the system of ensilage, I can keep 30 cows and 100 sheep, and raise mere wheat and corn en 70 acres, than I new de by keeping 20 cows and farming in the old way. I will set apart 7 acres of my best lind, and give it a geed coat of manure every year and one ten of superphesphate. About the first of June I will drill my corn at the rate of 1 bushel per aero, and in Septem ber will ensilcgc the corn. After taking oft the corn, I will drill in rye, and by manuring every year, will increase the fertility of the ground. My fields con tain S acres. I will make them 5 te 15 acre fields, and fellow corn by two crops of wheat, and the wheat by clever. 15y keeping mere than double the amount of stock, I will have plenty of manure for the last crop of wheat, a clever sod for corn, and will drill phosphate for the wheat which fellows corn in the fall. In this way I will have 30 acres of wheat ami 15 acres of eeru. The only less will be in the timothy hay new raised en eight ncics, and a little pasturage. DlttgltStlllg.
