Nicholas Jeremiah, a seaman, was the only person saved. The captain, mate and wife and children and one sea man were drowned. The'Skinner was running down the cape with a strong northwest wind, among a large fleet of vessels at anchor under the cape, when Capt. Thrasher, who was en the lookout, saw the Frederick Brown for a few minutes, but as she showed no light, he thought she was heading the same way as his own vessel. Directly, however, he found that she was heading for him, and he ordered his wheel hard apert. The rescued sea men, who leaped en beard of the Skin ner at the moment of collision, states that they had no lookout en the Freder ick Brown ; that they had lowered the mainsail down te reef it ; and went for wards haul the jib down. When they saw the Skmncr, he says the mate cried out te the captain, "hard starboard," but almost at once the vessels came to gether with a fearful crash, cuttiug in the entire forward pert of the Brown, and causint? her te sink two minutes later. Lines, he says, were thrown from the Skinner and one man was pulled nearly up the vessel's side, but he failed te retain his held, dropped into the sea and was drowned. The Skinner remained as near the locality of the accident as possible for two hours. Tbe seaman also says the Brown's side lights had gene out. The names of the lest are unknown. The dam age te the Skinner is slight. A Baptism Before au Execution. In Waverly,en Friday, Jehn Williams, one of the most desperate negre characters in that part of Tennessee, was hanged for the murder of his wife ia 18T9. He said that he had experienced a change of heart and was ready te die. At 9:30 o'clock he was taken te a creek near the jail and bap- cizeu ey .ciuer nemas,' et tue -Northern Methodist church. An immense crowd assembled en the banks. At the feet of the bridge the minister commenced tbe song. " On Jerdan's Stormy Banks I Stand," and the colored people in the crowd joined in. As Williams arose from the water he began shouting loudly, and it was with difficulty that the sheriff and guards could bold him. He said he was new ready te die and was willing te go. He was taken back te tbe jail, where he put en dry clothes. At neon he was taken by Sheriff Cellier te the scaffold, about a quarter of a mile from the jail, and shortly afterwards hanged. Republican Inconsistency. Colored Republican et Washington, D. C. Ferney's Progress. Yeu ask me in your card hew Mr. Fred. Douglass is getting along with bis appointment? The President has at last decided te appoint his wife's relative, a Mr. Henry, whoever he .may be. Gar lield has shown his cloven feet in this- mat ter. He gave us all te understand that he would appoint Mr. Douglass, but new it leaks out that.he premised Mr. Henry last wiuter. Sir. Riddle, who had a talk with the president, discovered that the social question was in the way. Mrs. Gar field wanted some one as marshal who could officiate at the White Heuse, and Mr. Douglass was tee dark for her taste. If the president supposes he can ignore a mau of 'the ability and promi nence of Douglass, and take up an obscure fellow like Henry, 'merely te gratify a prejudice, and still retain the re spect of the better class of the people he is mistaken. It is evident te me that he has no appreciative sense and does net feel the great obligations he is uuder te the colored people. It is easy for him te say, as he did yesterday te a delegation of colored men from Baltimore, that ue mau would be appeiutcd te office because he was " white or colored," but it is a fact that no colored man has as yet been selected for any position. The Democratic party are feels or they would embrace the present opportunity and bring themselves into power. If they had pledged themselves last year te granting equal rights and equal opportunities te all men without regard te race, they would have wen. But feel-like, they-adhered te their traditions.- A few months will tell al'. Yeu need net be surprised if the colored people come te the conclusion that it would be better, far better, that the Democrat y should come into power in 1884. Let us leek at it. The president has eighty thousand appointments ; there are net one hundred colored men who will receive appointments of any importance (I can safely say net ten.) There arc ever six million and a half ej colored people 111 the country, and all id these except a few thousand aie in the Seuth, under the gevcrmneut of the weist part of the Democratic party and yet they live ! 7ew I would like te knew hew much worse elftliey will be if the ten who may be appointed te some office arc brought under the sumo control ? Nene ! none ! If Gai field was a man brave and true, aud a statesman in all that it means, he would have gladly embraced the oppeitunity he had te have throttled the mean, cowardly prejudice of caste, by reappointing Mr. Douglass, and installing him at the AVhite Iiouse. I have been reading the speeches that have been made duiiug the week in the Senate, and I urn disgusted with the Republicans who arc at tempting te make capital out of the out rages that have been or arc being perpe trated against the peer, peer colored peo ple of the Seuth. Take four out of live of the men who have made speeches and every 0110 of them would have been found wanting if they were placed in positieus where they could give a practical demon stration of this desire te see the people treated properly. 1 The Year AVItlieut a. Summer." Hartferd Times. Wc continue te receive occasional in quiries concerning the " year in which there was no summer. " Seme persons appear te have a wrong idea as te the time. It was the year 1816. It has been called the year " without a sum mer; for there was a sharp frost iu every month. There are old farmers still living in Connecticut who remember it well. It was known as the "year without a sum mer." The fanners used te refer te it us " eighteen hundred and starve te death." January was mild, as was also February, with the exception of a few days. The greater part of March was cold and. boisterous. April opened warm, but grew colder as it advanced, ending witli snow and ice and winter cold. In May ice form ed half-au-iuch thick, buds ami flowers were frozen andf corn killed. Frest, ice and snow were common in June. Almist every green thing was killed and the fruit was nearly all destroyed. Snow fell te the depth of three inches in ew Yerk and Massachusetts, and ten in 3Iaine. .Fitly was accompanied with frost aud ice. On the .Tth ice was formed of the thickness of window glass in Xew Yerk, New England aud Pennsylvania aud corn was nearly all destroyed in certain sections. In August ice formed half-an-iuch thick. A cold northwest wind prevailed all summer. Cern was se frozen that a great deal was cut down and dried for fodder. Very little ripened in Xew England, even here in Connecticut, and scarcely any in the Middle States . Farmers were obliged te pay $4 or $" a bushel for corn of 1813, for .seed for the next Spring's planting. The two weeks in September wcie mild, the j rest of the month was cold, with frost, l and ice fermeCfciiuarter of an inch thick. October was mere than usually cold, with frost and ice! November was cold and blustering, with snow enough for geed sleighing. December was quite mild and comfortable. MARKETS. New lern Maruet.
