LANCASTER DAILY 1NTELLIGENGEK, TUESDAY, APRIL 5. 1181. Lancaster jrittciltsencer. TUK3DAY EVENING, APBIXi 6, 1881. Literary Opinions or Literary People. Bosten Traveller. The death of Themas Carlyle and Geerge Eliet famished the texts for a vast variety of conflicting literary opinions. Literary characters seem always te have regarded each ether with a lar greater divergence of view than the great body of common place people have regarded them. "We need net waste time reviewing the current posthumous estimates of these eminent writers in order te appreciate this truth. While living they were the subjects of this same curious clashing of contemporary judgments. Dr.Mackay wrote of the Scotch philosopher long age : "Carlyle is like pickles ; only a little of him can be tasted with any relish at a time." Jlacaulay wrote him down as " a man of taIcnts, theughabsurdly everpraised." Jas. Hegg thought it sufficient te characterize him as " the ingenious Tem Carlyle," and the author -of " Jfectes Ambresiauac," says : " Themas Cailyle I excuse he is entitled te he crazy, being a man of ge nius." Longfellow, in " Outre Mer," came nearer expressing, probably, the opinion that will finally held of him : " Heeded and wrapped about with the strange and autique garb, there walks a kingly, a most royal soul, even as the Emperor Charles walked amidst solemn cloister:; under a monk's cowl a monarch still in soul." We have heard a great deal lately of the iebcmblauco-ef Carlyle te Emei.senfbut James Russell Lewcl hap pily disposed of that fanciful comparison a long tune age, wncn lie wrote of -hmer-sen : "There :nc per-ens mole-Mind te the soul's muUeuud style, Who insist en a likeness 'twixt him and Car lyle ; Te compare with hl:n Plate would be vastly lalicr, Carlyle's the meir burlv, but E. is the rarer. C. gives Nature and Ged his own fit of the blues And rims common et)-c things with mythical hues. E. sit in u mvitcry calm and intense And leeks calmly around him with sharp common heiise." If we turn te the opinion which Carlyle passed upon ether literary lights we find that, as lew agreed as te his own merits se he agreed with but few as te the merits of etheis. He pronounced Lawrence Sterne te be ' our last, specimen of humor, and with all his faults and best," while Thack eray held that he was " a great jester, net a gieat humorist." Herace Walpole thought his writings were " the dregs of nonsense."' Goldsmith thought him "a dull felh.w," and Coleridge-declared that he "cannot be tee severely censured." Byren is branded by Carlyle as "the tecth-giiudiug, glass-eyed, lone Caleycr," though Shelley though him " a person of the most consummate genius," and Scott pronounced him "as various in composi tion as Shakespeare himself," and said he had " embraced every topic of human life and sounded every string en the divine liarp, from its slightest te its own power ful and heart a&teuudiug tones." Swin burne had Carlyle's hcatly detestation, and was characterized by him as " the apostle of filth." Swinburne retorted in a pamphlet by describing Carlyle as "a worshiper at every gallows that ever was erected." These amenities between litterateurs have ah, ays been as abundant as they are amusing, when contemplated at a dispas sionate distance. " Yeu bandbox," says Tennyson te Lord Lytten, and Lord Lyt Lyt ten promptly retorts with "Miss Alfred." Net even Skakspcare and Milten, threned as t joy arc te-day en a pinnacle beyond the rau.e of controversy, escaped the con tradictory estimates of critics. Byren wrote down his conviction that " Shak spcarc and Milten have had their rise,-and they will have their decline." Hume called the divine William " a dispropertioned and misshapen cianr," aud regretted that there were in his composition se " many irregularities aud even absurdi ties." Geerge III. is quoted as saying, " Was there ever Mich stuif as great patt of Shakespeare ? Only one must net say se." Of Milten's "Paradise Lest." Wal ler w rote that "if its length be net con sidered as meiit it hath no ether ;" Gold smith says that the great Puritan's poems " betray a narrowness of education and a degeneracj of habit," adding that "there is no force in hi.s reasenings, no eloquence in his style, aud no taste in his composi tion ;"' and Pox said that three-fourths of " Paiadise Loii' was net weith read ing.'' Te cite one mere example, hew gloriously ceutniiy are the judgments passed en the author of the great English dictionary Samuel Jehnsen. Curran calls him "a .superstitious aud bruti&h bigot ;"' Ad.un Smith says curtly, " He's a biutc,"' and Herace Walpole writes of him Uiat "with a lumber of learuinc and some strong pai Is, Jehnsen was an odious and mean character," endowed with "all the gigantic littleness of a country school master." Goldsmith balances these by saying that "he had nothing of the beat but his skin," and Carlyle te return te the name with which we commenced calls him "a mass of genuine manhood." Truly it may be said that if the great hum drum world does net knew its great men, they, in their tuin, de net always knew each ether. Neter Krturn.
