LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER, SATURDAY, APRIL 2, 1881. COLUMBIA NEWS. OUR KEGLLAR CORRESPONDENCE. Ne mere iaftiug until the wind Sub sides. Mr. Will. II. Shumau, of Philadelphia. is vi.siling in Columbia, the guest of his si.-ier, Miv. Jehu K. Uyneir. The regular semi-monthly meeting of tlie teaeiieis' iubtitute was held this morn ing. The employees of the Susquehanna iron company were paid this morning for two week's work. itcv. W. J. Dclpli. of Gettysburg. Pa., will eiHciutc in the E. E. Lutheran chuich te morrow meiiiinir and evening. The Columbia fire company lield its reg ular monthly meeting List evening, but turns-acted no business of impui taucc te the public. Ata business meeting of the Columbia, social club held last cveuing, the present effice: s wcie ic-electcd te serve for the en suing year. A local freight brakesmau residing at Philadelphia, had an arm mashed at Coatesville yesterday while coupling- cars. This morning's market was about the average in life. Seme el the farmers have been holding egs back until nearer Easter awaiting better prices, but it will hardly pay. but little property changed hands in Columbia yesterday and money for all purposes was plenty. The farmers round about h.ive been making their preparations for a week before the lirst of the month, and as a consequence of this forethought a rush was net experienced at any of the banks. It was thought that inasmuch as but little tobacco had been sold about heie money would have been haider te command. The etlices of school controller and county auditor aie incompatible. Is a school controller a school director ? If se Frank Cut ran, of Marietta, is iucapaciatcd from serving as an auditor. Itcv. F. W. Staley left here en the 7:30 train this morning en a visit te his parents at Bance llill,,la. Quite a large num ber of his late conjugation were at the depot te see Mr. Staley eji". Itcv. Mr. Saucibecr, of Yerk, Pa., will officiate te-morrow in the Reformed church of this place. Itnv. II. S. Gerhard of the Reformed clnuch of Columbia, will fill Mr. Sauei beer's jmlpit at Yerk. An ex change. Preb's many calls fei a higher barome ter have at last been fulfilled, aud warn ings te us of a fill in temperature came far enough ahead ; but new as both are here we presume it would be but fair tj excuse him for his inaccuracies as te time. Vei. nor, although picketing a month alien1, came about as near the irulh as one c. n well gej in saying .March would go out in lush. Would it net be a geed idea en the part of the government te abolish the signal office and employ the eminent phy sicians of the country te take care of Ven nor's health? The same ends would then be met with less expense. When Jack Henry, of the Examiner. was told that a fleck of swans had beeji seen heie yesterday he put it down as a 1st of Apiil eau.ud and refuse te have any thing te de with it. lly deiug se he missed a local. This morning a couple of life insurance agents tried te convince one of the officials at E. K. Mnitli & Ce.'sbank that he knew nothing about itisinauee. Yeu could net persuade these agents te call again for love or money. The rcpeit of the movement of cais ever the Pennsylvania railroad at Columbia for the mouth of Match shows an increase of 1 1.202 ever the month of February and a total, east and west, leaded aud empty, of 72,205. This total is divided as fellow;.: East leaded, 34,400 ; empty, 1,342. West leaded, 13 (ISO ; empty. 23.443. Total Total leaded, 47,480 ; empty, 24,783. Ficight during the first day of Apiil and up te this hour of the record lias net been very heavy, but it is expected te improve and it is believed the report for the month of April will have as noed a show ing a that ler the month of March. Mr. Rebert II. Read, a former Columbia boy, but n. i w an employee in the patent office at Washington, D. C. is vwting fiieuds in town. Mr. Read w.'6 -'t, oie time cei respondent of the Exatiiner hut aftcrwaid took up the study of l.nv with Congressman Bcltzhoever, of Carlisle, by whose influence he was initiated in the government's office weilc. The box sheet at Kiel arris's book store shows that near! hree huudicd scats have been reserved for the Nella F. llrewn en teitainmentin the opera house en Me id ay evening next, and the probability is that the auditorium will contain a large audi ence. A portion of the dress circle has been reserved for the teachers of the public schools and the higu school scholars. ANOTHER FATAL ACCIDENT. Man Killed en the Railroad. Yestei day afternoon about 2 o'clock as the fat line west wis passing Mcllvain's lime-kilns, a short distance cast of Leaman Place, the locomotive struck and instantly killed an unknown man who was standing en the track, looking at a train that was passing in an opposite direction, i ncrc is a rather short curve in the read at that point of the accident, and the uufertunatc man could net sec the train until it was al most upon him, and the noise made by the ether train no doubt prevented him from hearing it. He was thrown some distance from the track, when struck by the engine, but was net much disfigured His remains were taken te Leaman Place where an inquest was held by Deputy Cm ener J. M. Eaby, whose jury viewed the body, and adjourned te reassemble and make up their verdict this evening. Deceased was well dressed, appeared te be about 33 j ears of age, 5 feet C inches in height, and rather stoutly built, and prob ably a German. He had black hair, goatee and moustache. The remains were brought te this city this morning and placed in the dead house for identification. If net claimed, they will be interred in the almshouse ceme tery. The only papers found en the man's body was a diary in which were the words "Painter, Painter's Bridge, Chester county Pcnna." Tuske's a ma'.iner called "Jelly Jack," Who in pe'.iiics ettcn doth " tack;" lie' a cunning old rat, But despite or all thai The avenging Hull Rimrcr is new en his track. m Telegraph OlUce Changes. Owing te the consolidation of the inter ests of the American Union and Western Union telegraph companies, the office in Eshleman& K-ituven's bauk building in Centre square has been nlesed, Jehn E. Zecher and the American Union force, with a reduction of eue operator, remain big in charge et the office ia Nimlew's cigar store, D. II. Potts and the old West ern Union force, with a reduction of one operator, remaining in control of the office at the depot. Salaries and. the force arc expected te be lurther reduced by the con snlidatcd monopoly. The wires in this city Lave been adjusted te the new ar rangement. Corener' Verdict Deputy Corener Eaby has returned the inquest held en the body of narry Sehegel, who was killed near Leaman Place en Thursday te the commtssieacrs elhce. The jury found that he came te his death by falling frun a train of cars, no blame being j attrcbed te the titrpleyees of the railroad cemumv. Sunday Hea at the PosteMce. A dele gation of colored men representing a con vention of colored Republicans recently held in Baltimore waited upon the president te-day and presented through their spokes man, Isaac Myers, an address setting forth the grievances of the colored Republicans of Maryland, and asking at the bands of the president a fuller recognition of their claims. It is stated that notwithstanding the colored men constitute mere than a majority of the Republican vote in the state, and but for them there would new be no Republican representatives in Congress, they were almost ignored in the distribution e! federal patronage in Baltimore. Thepiesident replied briefly that be would examine into the matter complained of; that in the appointments te public office fitness and the qualifications of the individual should be considered ; the color, whether black or white, cenld in itself be neither a recommendation nor a bar.
