f LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCE!, MONDAY, JVUKCH 28. 1881. JUucastcr f ntclligencer. MONDAY EVENING, MAECH 28, 1881. TOBACCO. XHE NEW YORK MARKET. Seed tefndllavn Fer the Week End ing en Saturday March, 26. U. S. Tobacco Journal. With tbe exception of sales of about 1,200 cases of '79 Pennsylvania, in lets of from 50 te 150 cases, and 500 cases of '79 Ohie, tbare was net much business trans acted, the spirit of the market beinjj gen enilly dull and inanimate. The main rea son for this comparative quietness is as signed in the lack of activity in cigar manufacturing circles, which is almost general. This inactivity would net prevail if the elements had net disturbed com inunicatien with the principal cigar con suming sections of the West. Conse quently, large- manufacturers are net in the humor te invest in old leaf te any greater extent than probable or urgent necessity demands. Such a condition of affairs in this mar ket at this time of year is generally apt te affect operations in green tobacco in the country. Buying of '80 crops was net car ried en last week with the vigor that characterized several of the preceding weeks. An uncertainty of purpose among the buyers has been quite noticeable. Evan in this state, where it was thought that investments in the '80 crop would be extremely safe, a wavering is reported in purchasing. Perhaps the packers have discovered that it is net all geld that glit ters, or, better, that it is net all wrappers that are long. It would be felly te attempt te give any opinion new of the condition of the crops, and only the actions of the individual buyer can be taken as a guide, a peer one, we must admit, te form an opinion upon. The actions of buyers of '80 Pennsylva nia certainly show the application of con siderably mere judgment than was shown by them in their pui chases of the '79 crop. The haste and scramble, se te speak, with which that memorable crop was secured by them has net been repeated. Carcful ncRS in the selections of crops is a practice new in vogue, the purpose of which some of the editors of the Lancaster papers are at less te understand. The lower grades of the '80 Pennsylvania crop remain very much neglected, and, as we mentioned last week, the policy te rather invest in '80 Ohie or Wisconsin than in the- low grades of '80 Pennsylvania, is beginning te be carried out. At least new and mere nu merous arrivals of packers in Ohie aud Wisconsin are reported. Outside of the above mentioned sales of '79 Pennsylvania and Ohie in our mar ket, at figures equal ling these paid during the past two months, we notice sales ei only a few hundred cases of '79 Connecti cut wrappers at 23 te 3G cents. There is still a large quantity of this tobacco in the market, and jobbers can only be induced te take held of it at exceeding low figures. Should the market net improve speedily, holders will likely accede te the views of jobbers. There were reports of sales of a few hundred cases of '79 state aud Wis consin, but nothing definite regarding them could be ascertained. Havana In livelier condition than seed leaf. Out-of-town orders from manufac turers are reported quite numerous, and consequently changes of many parcels in this market took place. The sales are sum med up te 1,100 bales, three-fourths of which were of the '79 crop ; balance con sisted of '80 crop. Prices remain un changed. The Philadelphia Market. Dealers report old desirable stock diffi cult te obtain, with prices entirely tee high te be profitable te manufacturers. A fair trade doing, but no rush. Prices still maintain steadiness, and appear at present te be favorable te holders. The weather this spring has se far been against busi ness ; we leek for a change in both ere long. Our packers are moving in the new leaf in the various states. Gans'n Repert. Sales of seed leaf tobacco, reported by J. S. Gaus's Sen & Ce., tobacco brokers, Nes. 84 and 80 Wall street, Xew Yerk, for the week ending March 28, 18S1 : 110 cases 1880 Pennsylvania, p. t.; 1400 cases 1879 de., asserted, 12$(a,23e. ; wrappers, 18 40 ; 200 cases 1S79 .New England, wrap, pens, 1530c. ; 135 eases State, p. t. ; 100 cases 1878 Ohie. 1012c. ; 5G0 cases 1879 Ohie, 4J(ajl3c. Total, 2,511 eases. Recent Neighborhood Sale. Samuel P. Marshall, of Birmingham township, Chester county, sold his extra fine crop of leaf tobacco te a gentleman from Lancaster county, the prices paid were 1G, 7 and 3 cents per pound. Mr. Marshall had one of the best crops in that section of the county. The same pur chaser beuirht the crop of James Kirkp.it- rick. whose farm adjoins that of Mr. Mar shall, for 18, G and '.i cents per pound. The Coatcsville Times says : R. E. Smith, tobacconist of this borough, has bought the entire stock of cigars fiem a manufacturer of line cigars at Schauicck, Lancaster county. The amount paid for stock amounts te nearly $9,000. Jehn Miller, of Bainbridge, se'd 1,500 lbs. of tobacco te Fatmau & Ce. for 15, G and 3. The tobacco was delivered en Sat urday. The Duck Island Crep. Tobacco Lear. The tobacco crop in the Duck Island, Bucks -county, district is beginning te move, which is a satisfaction te the grow ers. It has been very quiet here all this winter. Nearly all the tobacco is packed away in boxes, awaiting the arrival.ef pur chasers. Every week the amount of sales increases, and one or two geed buyers could Boen take all there is in the district. While last year produced some peer crops, there are ethers in this district as geed as was ever grown. Up te the present time, ever twenty crops have been disposed of. New would be an excellent time for some of the Lancaster buyers te visit this dis trict. There is no flea bite here te give them trouble. The first of April will seen be here, and the growers some few of them would like te sell before that time te be prepared te close up the year's trans actions. A Widow's Discover-. Letters Amenj Her Dead Husband's Effect Snowing That He Had Anether Wile. A Mr. Jeseph Wagner, who was said te possess considerable property anil who lived with his wife in tlie Scceud district of Baltimore county, died en March 5. His wife, whom he married eight years age, in settling up the estate found letters from two married daughters of her deceased husband, who are living in the West, which referred te their mother in Philadelphia. Mrs. Wasrner had never heard of the two daughters, and had been told by Wagner that his first wife was dead. Frem the letters, which are of recent date, and ether documents, it is evident that there is another Mrs. Wanier new alive iu Philadelphia, and thatMr. Wagner was a bigamist. Wagner was a Prussian by birth, G4 years old, and has always lived-a secluded life. Before he died he made request that he be buried be fore daybreak under a tall evergreen tree which steed near the deer of his resi dence. This request was net complied with. Mrs. Wagner Ne.2 attempted Thurs day te close up the estate, consisting cf about 800 acres of laud and a large sum of ready money, probably several thousand dollars. The Baltimore county court, however, declined te act in the matter! as, if wife Ne. 1 was living at the time wife Ne.2 married Wagner, the second spouse would have no claim en tbe es tate. r Hew te Get Well.
