The ether day a goat licked off 8170 worth of revenue stamps from whisky barrels stored in a Shelby ville (Ind.) dis tillery. "Hewmuehisthat?" said a mourner in a flower shop, pointing te a wreathef immertelles inscribed " Te my mother-in-law." "What you like," replied the florist; " I have had it for four years and no one has ever offered te purchase it." Senater Carpenter used te tell with much gusto, a remark made by his son Paul several years age. At a social even ing gathering at the senator's house a guest inquired of the boy, "Paul, what de you intend te de when you grew te be a man?" "Well," answered the boy, "I should like te drive a hack, but I suppose I shall have te be a senator." That is indeed a beautiful and touching story which has been set afloat about two red copper cents left in the postmaster generals omce by a peer wiuew some p months age, which coins no one in the dc- . partment nor any of ilr. Maynard s visi tors thought of appropriating. It recalls the days of Alfred, when geld bracelets were left hanging with impunity en the trees all ever England ! Fancy a Repub lican official filing his soul for two cents ! If it had been a million dollar appropria tion for star-service routes, new ! An English Herse fair. An interesting exhibition has recently been held at the Agricultural hall by the English Cart horse society. One hundred and fifty-three entries of the Clydesdale, Suffolk, and the Shire-bred varieties of draught animals competed for the prizes offered. The importance of obtaining a geed staunch breed of cart herse has long been recognized in England, and the dif ferent varieties are as carefully bred as are the race horses. The stud books have been compiled, one for each of the differ ent breeds, and they arc as eagerly perused by the e wners and purchasers of geed cart horses as are the herd books by the raisers of prize cattle. The Euglish carthorse society is under the patronage of the Prince of Wales, and the Earls of Elles mcres and Spencer are the president and vice president respectively. While vari ous countries dispute with England the honor of excellcnce with respect te their thoroughbreds. . France only can compete with her for the palm as te eart horses. One of the greatest !;ight in Londen te the levers of horse flesh ars the stables of the leading breweries. The superb cendi tien in which their horses are kept, and the size of the animals themselves, often raaching seventy-five inches, are matters of wendermeut te centry people. Vcnner's Latest Weather Prediction. Venner Writes : "The winter of JlSSl is net ever yet by any means, and nothing in my opinion could render this mere prebable than the present term of mild weather. There are yet at least three storm periods in this month namely, en the 12th, 13th or 14th ; en the lGth and 17th, and lastly en the 20th and 21st. The last two periods will give us heavy snow falls, one of which is likely te be the heaviest fall of the winter. This will be pretty general ever a large part of North j America, and is likely te cress ever te Great Britain. There will also be one mere cold dip of considerable severity. The month will end with rain and slush." -- I-. T11K PALKSl'lXE itEtiULATORS. Their Threats te and and AKsaMliiutlnns Brought End by Their Arrest. Thirty-one persons, including several women, have been ai rested at Palestine, Ohie, a little town near the Indiana line, for sending threatening letters te Jacob Leng, a saloon keeper. The culprits arc supposed te belong te a gang of regula tors, formed two or three years age, who have terrorized the village by their threats and in two cases by downright assassina tion. Iu 1879 and old n:au named Guyere received a note warning him te leave town en pain of death. A few nights thereafter a horseman rode up te his deer and hailed him. Guy ere stepped out en the perch, and as he appeared in the lamp light twenty bullets pierced his body. His murderers escaped, and net one of them has ever been brought te justice. Later a negrp named Stephen Wade was served in like manner. An cifert was then made te ferret out the leaders, but the detectives found the band of regulators se strong that they gave up the task. Since then ether persons have been served with no tices te quit the country, and several of them remembering the fate of Guyere and Wade, have emigrated. Leng, the saloon keeper, however, refuses te go, and the arrests just made show -that there is a prospect that the reign of the mob may be brought te a halt. A Curious Tale of Murder Iu North Carolina. A respectable citizen of Camden county, North Carolina, writes under date of March 10 : "I was riding along the read this morning en my way te my home when my attention was attracted by heavy groans proceeding apparently from a pile of leaves in the weeds about ten feet from the read, and en going te sec the cause of the groaning I found a man nearly dead. He was apparently between thirty and thirty-five years old. lie told me he was attacked by three men who were hired by a young lady and a mulatto mau te mur der him. Since his death I have learned that his name was M. I). Sykes, and that he hailed from Elizabeth Citj, N. C. Three letters from different young ladies were found in his pocket. One was from Miss Jennie Ncdell, of Philadelphia, and the ether two were from Miss Kate Tayler and Miss Emma Tayler, of Portsmouth, Va. He was badly mangled, but seems te have fought bravely for his life. When found he had clenched in his hand a knife the biade of which was about eight or nine inches long." Lured te Death by Drums. Pierson's flour mill, Newcastle, Law rence county, being infested with rats, a nait aezen drummers ucat tueir music through the building and the rodents ap peared in great numbers. They ran around the feed bins in a wild chase. Se rapidly did they turn corners that their tails snapped with a lepert like that of a bull whacker's whip. The boys with the dogs were signalled, the doers opened, and the hungry canines let in en them. The unfortunate rats scorned te be under a spell, and made no attempt te seek holes. Fer five minutes slaughter reigned supreme and when it had subsided the fleer was covered with the bodies of forty-three rats. Again were the drums called into requisition and the same scene ensued again. This time C8 rats bit the dust. The boys continued their operations with their drums and dogs all the afternoon and when evening came there were niled up in front of the stable, mangled," cut and tern, the bodies of 479 rats.
