In this county, where tobacco is the great, and I might almost say the only paying crop, it is often planted for several years in succession en the same land. Therefore our farmers, of very necessity, must turn te profit everything that will, in the shape of manure, increase the yield of their crops; and, from long experience they have found that there is nothing su perior te the coarse stalks of tobacco. Every one is saved ; every one is utilized, and there is no question but thay they are profitable. It is net necessary that they should receive any special preparation for use. Many mix them in the barnyard with btable manure, where they readily absorb the liquid manure, and ret as fast or faster than corn stalks. They are then applied similarly, and along with the ether man ures, for any crop needed. The ravages of the potato-bug having almost rendered it impossible te grew a crop of that vegeta ble, some one advocated planting potatoes along with tobacco stalks as a preventive. Fer one year it seemed te be the thing needed ; but the second year, when mere generally tried, it was found te be of no use. Many, however, in this experiment for an insect prevention, found out that it greatly increased the yield of potatoes, and rendered them entirely exempt from harm from the white giub, which, in some localities, does se much te the injury of the crop. Therefore, from one reason aud another tobacco stalks are mere or less gradually being looked upon as especially adapted for a manure for potatoes. The stalks arc cut very easily en a power fodder cut ter, and if cut in the winter when filled with frost, and piled away, they will heat aud by spring will be found in a most per fect condition for application te any crop needing ready manure of great strength. They were also used throughout this lo cality (as stated en page 83,) te keep the slugs oil rose bushes and the different in jurious insects from fruit trees, and even new it is no uncommon sight te see or chards of several acres with a dozen or mere stems around the feet of each tree. Opinion is much divided as regards then worth in this particular. The stalk be ing hollow, I am inclined te think from my own experience, and from observation in the orchards of my neighbors, that the parent moth of the different injurious in sects lays its eggs in these stalks, and that when they arc gathered up and taken away at the proper period it is a benefit. If left there through the season, they are of no use, only in the shape of a fertil izer, concerning the value of which in this country there is only one opinion. C. C. Bkickebville, Lancaster Ce., Pa. Tobacco Plant Beds. XV. 11. White. The time for preparing plant beds and covering seed is close at hand. Upen the care bestowed upon the preparation, seed ing and after treatment of the bed de pends largely the success of the crop. Un less we have plenty of geed plants in sea son, the crop is late in maturing, often net developing full growth. It is net well te sew the seed tee early, as frosts often de stroy the young plants. The ground :;lieuld be free of frost and work without being pasty ; crumbling when turned. The surface should be rich and the soil made very line before sewing ; and then wc find it letter te sew se thiek tlfat the plants will fully occupy the whole surface, rather than sew se thin that weeds grew instead, although the thin seeding gives the mere stocky plants, provided the weeds are kept out entirely. Still, with heavy heeding theic is usually no trouble iu obtaining geed plants, where pieper after-treatment is given. Instead of spreading one tablespoonful of seed ever 100 square yards of surface, I have found it preferable te apply ten times that quan tity. Great care is te be used in scatter ing the seed evenly ever the whole sur face. Unless there is plenty te feed en, the plants will net grew, but take en a yellow, sickly appearance ; therefore guano and ether fertilizers are applied much mere liberally than otherwise would be the case ir the bed never has been used for the purpose bcfei e a cart loidefgood stable manure is none tee much te plow under, and four quarts of palvcrized guano must also be worked into the surface of a bed 10 by SO feet. Then sew the seed, and either roll with a heavy roller or tread the sur face. A close fitting beard frame te sur round the bed is a geed thing te keep off intruders and answers well te support and held a cloth covering in case it is desirable for starting the plants early, or te protect from frosts or insects. Cheap unbleached cotton sheeting is as geed as anything, and is better than glass, as it requires less attention and costs only a fractional part as much. Where the tobacco fly troubles the plant bed it would be well te try fenc ing them out in this way. Radish seed might be sewn outside around the bed for the fly te feed en, in addition. Troublesome Children that are always wetting their bed ought no te he scolded ami punished ler what they can not help. They need a medicine having a tonic cllcct en the kidneys and the urinary organs. Such a medicine is Kidney-Wert. It has specific action. De net tail te get it for them.
