I W''51' LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER, THURSDAY, MARCH 10. 1881. Eaticaster. faitclltgehcer. THUBSDAY EVENING,. MAB. 10, 1881. Wigwam and his tiate. Bosten Pest. Mr. Wigwam is a farmer, and recently one of these agents that infest the country came along and tacked off upon him an automatic gate. The gate was se ar ranged that the weight of a person ap proaching it would cause it te rise, and when they had passed under it, down it come. This gate was painted red, and the day it was put in position, a cress bull, owned by Mr. Wigwam, discovered it. A ' bull somehow has a rooted antipathy for that hue, and this animal no sooner dis covered the gate than it made a rush te gore it. Of eeurse, as the bull approached the gate, his weight causeditterise, andhe passed under it, and his failure te hit any thing solid, seemed te affect him about as it does a man te go up a dark stairway, and when he had reached the top, think there is one step mere, and step for it, and bring his feet down se hard that it makes the .sole tingle as if slapped by a shingle, and leaves the print of the beet en the iloer. When the bull recovered a little and looked buck and saw the gate, which had come down in its original positieu, he couldn't quite understand hew he get past it, and what had happened, and he steed and thrashed himself with his tail, and thought of it for a minute and then tried it again. Same result. Bull mere puzzled than ever and awful mad. Anether trial. But only succeeds in rooting his nose into the ground. Bull almost delirious with lage. Wigwam, who is watching him from the house, in same condition with laughter. The bull evidently made up his mind te hit that gate or dU in the attempt and he ti iud the thing seven times mere, and yet the gate steed there, every time, wheu he looked back. Then having wrenched himself aud scraped the hide oil his nose, and get quite out of breath, the animal became discouraged and drew aside and merely watched the gate. But Wigwam hadu't had enough of the fun. He took a mirror, and wcut out and climbed upon the gate and caught the sun light en the mirror, and Hashed it in the bull's eyes te madden him. It did. ' The bull rushed once mere at the gate. Wig wam expected the gate te rise up with him and let the bull pass. But his weight held the irate down. The bull hit the gate square. Wigwam was knocked forty feet, and L'et his eves and mouth full of dirt, and was badly skinned. The mirror was shattered. And the bull caught his horns and one feet in the gate, which broke from its fastenings, and he went madly careering about with it, strug gling te idease himself, and Wigwam didn't dare go te his rescue, and was tee much hurt te de auythiiig, anyway, and finally the bull, after tearing up. every thing in his reach, threw himself and broke his neck. Less. 8300. Wigwam lays all tiie blame en the gate agent, which, perhaps, is natutal. i.ife arid Lere en the Farm. Ocrniti'.itewn Tcleg'aph. It ii net liuc, se far as we knew and be licve, as is ficqncutly claimed, that a great many el our intelligent farmers or farm ers' bevs yet "disgusted" with farm life and go into ether occupations. That some dotheie is no doubt, but these are mere than in:ulu up by ethers from ether pur suits who go te their vacated places The continued dii-cusMeit.s we read in the pa pers as te "why our boys leave the farm," alwar appeared te us uncalled for. It is by no means uncommon that boys show no iii'mcsc in their parents' pursuits. There .-ecms te be a natural disposition iu children te try bemcthing else and this is as true pei hit ps among farmers' sons as of any ether persons' sous, and no mere. Of com sc people who are always in the country and knew little else than of farm life ate apt te imagine that city life has some pleasures of which they are de prived. And it may be se. But then people de net enjoy them much who live theie. It becomes a ineie routine of fashion iu v. inch they come te de things, net because they take pleasure in them, but because they must. They come te leek upon these things as a bore, and en the country as the gicat heaven of this world ; and many a man in the city toils a whole year lfnccasingly for no ether ob ject thau that lie may enjoy a little of the country at reme time in the summer sea sea seu ; or at some time iu his life te have a little country home. Tine many of these people go te watering places, or some ether fashionable spot, and go ever again the fashionable follies of eity life. But the natural love of the country is at the bottom of it all. If the mere pleasures of city life were all, they could get the whole in or near the city, but the charms of the ride te the destination, the rural aspects of the spot selected, in bheit the change from city te something like the country, is, we repeat, at the bottom of it all. Who would net be in the country te enjoy the cool breezes, and the healthful odors fiem weed and field, is the burden of the song with every city paper when June comes round, and no tune is mere enjoyed by the general reader. It only remains for these who are en the laud te understand the advantages of their posi tion and the disadvantages of one they sometimes envy, te make them net only satisfied with their let, but actually tempt ed te thank heaven they arc net :is ether men. Blackberries and Raspberries. Gerniautewn Tclcsrah. These are getting te be agcneral and pro fitable crop te raihc for market, and our farmers, and tliose who only have a few acres of land te grew them en, are begin ning te understand the raising of them in the way that money can be made quite thoroughly. There is nothing pleases us mere iu passing through our markets than the display of these fruits, as well as ether small fruits that arc new se abund antly finding their way into our great city marts. It is tine, that the veiy choicest kinds are net always the most profitable, Dccausc tney aie tne most dilheuit te pre duce, en the ground that they require winter protection ; but then moneyed peo ple, with whom our city abounds, never object te paying whatever may be the ruling price for choice fruit or products of any kind. We doubt if the blackberry is grown te as great an extent new as it was ten or twelve years age ; the reason of which may be that it is attended with mere labor and labor, tee, of a net very pleasant kind, from the mauy long, sharp thorns with which" the bush is armed. Raspberries, en the ether hand, have little objections en this score, and are in a great many re spects much easier te cultivate. A peck of the latter, tee, can be gathered te a quart of the blackberry. W ith f he black berry it is almost next te impesiblc te select the ripe ones ; and unless they are ripe, the fruit is anything but pa'atable. Still, it ui be raised aud marketed with preGt. as it is a great favorite with many, who will pay almost any price for it ; more over, thera is scarcely auy fruit te be pre ferred te a fully rips blackberry as lare as pigeon's egg. Beth the raspberry and the blackberry require a loose, rich, moist soil, and de net object te a little shade. They should be planted shallow, but firmly set and staked, and after the year's sprouting is high enough- net te be interfered with, be liberally applied every year; and al most any trash will de for this. Of eeurse it can be applied when new beds are set out, but net tee heavily as te obstruct the growth of the sprouts. Raspberry canes should be set apart about three feet in the rows, and the rows tour leet apart. Elickberry canes should be planted about four feet apart both in and between the rows. m What Becomes efche Sespstcae. The Tima, of Bethlehem, Pa., is anx ious te knew what is done with the soap stone which is largely quarried and ground atEasten. The industry has lately re ceived 'a wonderful impetus and the mills are running day and night. The product is shipped te New Yerk ; thence where? "It is claimed te be used in in paper pulp. It may be," the Timtt says, "te some extent. It is alleged te be used In hatter's felt. Per haps se ; but where is se large an amount disposed of? Soapstone. or steatite, is a combination of silica and magnesia. It is soft and greasy and hence it is sometimes called lardstene. Frem its adaptability te making vessels, in some sections it is called pet rock. When ground, it is a soft, smooth, greasy, and almost impalpable powder. Ne one who has seen it in its ground state will question its almost diamond value for adulteration. Candies, sugars, flour, but ter, it is alleged, can be adulterated te the extent of 20 te 25 percent, without any chance of detection." Fortunately detection in such cases is net at all difficult. Dissolve the suspect ed sugar or candy ; the insoluble mineral will remain. Burn a sample of suspected flour ; an excess of ash will betray the cheat. Melting and filtering will de the same for suspected lard or butter. Troublesome Children that are always wetting their beds ought no te be scolded and punished ler what they can not help. They need a medicine haying a tonic ettect en the kidneys and the urinary organs. Such a medicine is Kidney-Wert. It has specific action. De net tail te net it for them. Exchange. m7-lwdftw We Believe That it everyone would use Hep Hitters freely there would be much less sickness and misery in the world ; and people arc fust finding this out, whole families keeping well at a trifling cost by Its use. It is commended te the attention of these af flicted with Indigestion and Dyspepsia. BRANDY AS A MEDICINE. This new much abused Alcoholic Stimulant was never intended as a beverage, but te be used as a medicine of arcat netencv in the euro of some of the destructive diseases which sweep away their annual thousands of victims. With a purely philanthropic motive we pre sent te the fuverable notice el invalids espe cially these alii ic ted with that miserable dis ease Dyspepsia, a specific remedy, which i3 nothing mere or less than Brandy. The aged, with tccble appetite and mere or less debility, will find this simple medicine, when used properly, A Sovereign Remedy or all their ills and aches. Be it, however strictly understood that we prescribe and me uui one arucic. ami uiui is REIGAIiTS OLD BRANDY, Sold by our enterprising young friend, II E SLAYMAKEB. This Brandy has steed the test for years, and baa never failed, as far as our experience extends, and we therefore give it the preference ever all ether Brandies no matter with hew many Jaw-breaking French titles they are branded. One-fourth of the money that is yearly thrown away en various impotent dyspepsia specifics would sufllcc te buy all the Brandy te cure any such case or cases. In proof of the curat! ve powers et Reigart's Old Brandy, In eases et Dyspepsia, we can summon nuin beta of witnesses one case in particular we cite: A hard-working farmer bad been atlllcted with an exhaustive Dyspepsia for a number cf years; bis stomach would reject almost every kind of feed; he bad sour eructatiens con stantly ue appetite in fact, he was obliged te restrict his diet te crackers and stale bread, and as a beverage he used McGrann's Reet Beer. He is a Methodist, and then, as new, S reached at times, and in his discourses often eclaimed earnestly against all klndsef strong drink. When advised te try Reiffart's Old Brandy, 'in his case, he looked np with astenliiuicnt, but after hearing et its wonderful cflects in the cases of some of his near acquaintances, he at last consented te fellow our advice. He used the Brandy faithfully and steadily; the first bottle giving him an appetite, and before the second was taken he was a sound man.with a stomach capable of digesting anything which hejehese te eat. He still keens it and uses a lit tle occasionally; and since lie lias this medi cine he has been of very little pecuniary bene- nt te tee uocter. a itkactisibe jthtsiciak. H. E.
