LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCEK, FKIfcAY, FEBRUARY 25, 1881. i' -Lancaster tnieiligencer. FRIDAY EVENING, FEB. 26, 1S81. Change of Fingers. A Nevel Surgical Experiment which Twf Mcu Undergo for Meney. The Cleveland Herald says : Yesterday a report reached the Herald regarding a peculiar treatment en the part of a resi dent physician. Dr. Banten was found at his office, and te inquiries from the visi tor mads the following interesting state ment : Fer some years I have made the sub ject of ciigraft'isig one of study, and se con fident was I that it could be performed that en last Wednesday morning I deter mined t make the veutuic. Frank and August Filer, aged respectively 25 and 28, for a con-isderable sum of money were pre vailed upon te subject themselves te the ordeal, and at "J o'cleck: myscit aim assistant amputated the little linger th:-iugli the .shaft of the second phal anges of the right hand of August and the analageus linger en the person of Frank," engrafting the part am putated from one person te that of the ether, putting four sutures in each. The lingers wcic dressed and the men departed with strict injunctions te say nothing about the matter and te return en Thurs day te have their fingers redressed. Dur ing the operation quite an amusing acci dent took place. The little linger of Mr. Frank Filer had been amputated, wrapped in a towel and placed en the steam heater. My assistant, in looking for something te wipe the bleed from his hand?, took the tow.! ..-I siet.cing the finger. When I came te ioek for the linger, after the ene ea the Land of August had been ampu tated, for tlte purp se of placing it en his stump, I found it gene, but, alter an anx ious search of a few minutes, I happened te glance in the slop bucket, and saw it Ueating en the surface. It was quickly rescued, placed en the stump and band aged. ' The entire opsratien was performed iu le.-s thiiii an hour without the use of awes! belies or of stimulants. Notwith standing my exp:!.-sci wish, the men went down .street, exposing themselves te the rain and dampness, and at every op portunity told the story of the wonderful experiment, contrary te my instructions, desiring te make nothing public until the experiment was proven beyond the possi bility of a (le'il)t. ' Twenty-four hours inter the men ic turncd and Last their iinei.s redressed, whi.-li wt ie ibiurl in a very premising con dition, lieiui'li.standiiig the exposure that the men h-.! subjected them te. Tlieie was a union of the paits and a partial cir culation, giving a normal appearance te the lingers a-, far down as the nail. The continuity seemed peri'eetrand one of the men said he had sensation in the member. I pivpese te watch the eases and give them ni3' most careful attention." t'nglish Fiii'incrs in Despair. The ICSiVet "f Suii Hat-vents and of Amcilcan Oimpctiiten. The Londen Economist says: "It may be from fear of America, it may be from the long continuance of unprofitable har vests, it may he from the rise in the ex penditure especially upon labor, or it may even be from increased intelligence, but there is :v hopelessness about fann ers' complaints which experienced men, familiar with their ways, never remem ber before. They hardly leek for any impievemcnt. They de net speak of the bad times as exceptional. They de net, among each ether, talk of prices assure te improve. Above all they threw up their farms en apparently light provocation. Experienced laud agents notice a total diQerenec of t -me and disposition te hag gle, a sort of determination te make none but low etVers, and te stick te them. The tenants, as they say, seem net te want the farms, and make eilers tee low te be en tertained, in a kind of spiteful sport. Very often no elfers at all can be obtained, and the land is cither thrown upon the landlord's hands or gees out of cultivation. The latter oc currence was formerly most unusual in Great Britain, and seems almost impossi ble ; but there is no reason te doubt the statements made that in every county in the Seuth and Eist large numbers of farms formerly yielding geed rents are lying idle, the landlords being unwilling te let at low rents te men who ask long leases, and unwilling te cultivate for themselves or able te bear a temporary less. We knew iu our own experience of a district in which eleven farms, poerish te fair as te soil, are deserted and uutilled, and have read ad vertisements of a quite extraordinary character in the way of temptation te tenants. Of farms in the landleids' hands, and of farms broken into two or three, tliere is no end, while land in modest patches lias sunk in value in a degree which suggests a kind of dread among tenants as well as land buyers. There is ;i feeling of hopelessness, iu fact, abroad among farmers of the better class, and of rcluctaucc te remain in the business, which of itself may produce important effects, willingness te farm having been an important clement in the trade. It dif fered from all ethers in its attraction for a class these who preferred country life and were content net only with modest profits, but with aim sl an entire absence of II' c ilitDwei winch in many walks of life aiv .-e attractive. New that willing ness has disappeared.
