- rrjl LANCASTER DAILY BSTEIXlGENCEK, TUESDAY, JANUARY 25, 1881. xcastcr intelligencer. TUESDAY EVENING. JAN. 26, 1831. High Altitude. Attuuspherlc Influences Upen the Health of Humanity. Dr. D. H. Deugan, of Leadvillc, lias written a paper oil atmospheric influences upon the health of humanity at high alti tude, taking Lcadville as the standard, from which we make the following ex tracts : Au attempt te estimate the influence that altitude alone may exeit en health and disease is attended by many difficul ties, irem the fact that all the vital phe nomena arc influenced by surrounding!' of such multitudinous character that it is impossible te study the cil'ect of any one condition separately, se that an enumera tion and analysis of such facts as come belerc us in connection with altitude must be regai ded ake in association with the many causes that combine in the forma tion or tl'C IChUlt. In a general way it may be said that the atmesphi'ie of an altitude such as ours (lO.ODO feet above sea level) acts as a htiiiiuLtut Te one in perfect health this is manifested by a feeling of exhihuatieu when he fust came, under its influence. Alrthe 1 unctiens of the body are quicken ed, the appetite increases and digestion improves, lassitude gives way te energy and visor, and the activity of bed.y and mind by day :ue fallowed by sound and restful sleep. Up'.n some Conns of disease this stimulation acts beneficially, while upon ethers the results are the reverse. Among the lirst and pel haps most im im peitautciicct txt-ited by altitude is an increase of chest capacity. Examinations for life insurance show that our people have a gi eater degree of chest expansion than is the aveiage, while the number of respirations per minute is net inci eased. The increased expansibility is net an evi dence of increase in the actual surface of lung tissue, but lather the result of its meie complete utilization, Under ordi nary conditions :i ceiiMdcinhlc poitienof lungi occupied by residual air and kept as a kind of reserve for emergencies, one of which is picsented by elevation. Alti tude diminishcn atmospheiie pressure and l educes the quantity of oxygen in a iriven volume of air. In eider then te obtain the Uaii.il quantity of oxygen au addi tional volume of air must be inhaled with each inspiration and thus the residual space in the lunijs brought ihte action. "While the expansion of the lung is thus in creased its icserve space i coircspend- ingly diminished, and as higher altitudes arc attained the diminution continues till mere rapid b;c tilling is lequiic 1 te sustain even eulinary efl'ett. The effect of alti tude, in its thoieugh utilization of the re spiratory surface f the lung for ordinary exertions mu.st of necessity have an im portant influence ever the course of a dis ease s-ueh as pneumonia, where inflamma tion disables a ne: lien of the lung and its retirement from the eflice of luruishing exygeu te tlie system cannot be compen sated by the mere perfect ellice of its re maining portion. This may perhaps ex plain, in part, at lea-t, why the mortality from pneumonia is increaul with alLitude. Fer though we may deny that the causa tien of litis disea-e is favored by altitude or these conditions already named as ac companying altitude, except whim associ ated with ether factors te be lefened te hereafter, it will be admitted that, altitude in itself, or diminished density of the at mosphere, may have an important bearing qu its mortality. There aie geed reasons for believing that our mountain air would have a bene ficial effect en the. earliest stages of tuber culosis. The eases of consumption that aoceme uiiiier oeservation, However, aie se few that Hatistics aie unavailable, but itisenly u-aseiiable te conclude that the clear, puie, invigeiatiug atniespheie of our summer se.isiin would exest a tonic effect en a system enfeebled by pulmonary disease, and the tew ea.-cs available for study indicate t Hat il also has a special infhe ice in arresting the morbid piecess in the lungs. If cavities of considerable nize have formed, the probabilities then are that no improvement need be expected, but rather the icveise. Of the diseases especially pertaining te childhood, we liml all or neatly .all of them, possible. Diphtheria, scarlet fever, measles, mumps, whoepiug cough, chol era infantum have each announced their ability te become as fully developed here as elsewhcie. As yet, none of them have pi evaded as epidemics of as malignant forms as they eiten de in lower altitudes, their special cause being doubtless held iu cheek by our colder climate. Individ ual cases may be as severe and as fatal as elsewhcie, but the degree of contagious ness is greatly lessened and as a result the ratio of disease of childieu is much below the general aveiage. In former years an idea prevailed and was geue.i.tlly accepted that wounds of all kinds eecuning in this altitude were apt te be followed by erysipelateus inflamma tion. Fin ther observation has shown that such wound, fellow the .same law here as elsewhere, and that attention te cleanli ness, cue iu ihessing and regaid te the genera! health aie lewarded Usually by ex cellent lesults, tiie Mopeition of excep tional ct-.ps being no yi eater here than in lewfr altitudes. A leview of the subject leads te the con. elusion that while the tendency te acute inflamuiateiy nlHictiens may be promoted by our extic-ine daily ciianes of tempera ture, the average influence of the climatic conditions found here is favorable te health. While a greater number of cases of pneumonia occur thee aie largely the result of expesuic, and when fatal, it is often because of the absence of proper cjtre, eonifeltablc habitations and suitable nourishment. Ou the ether hand, we find the diseases that are se common at lower altitudes comparatively rare in this, and some of them, such a consumption, almost un known, and this, notwithstanding an almost total disregard of all hygienic knowledge.
