I JwCt FfiLDAY; EVENING. JAN. 14, 1881. TREASUEE SHIPS. O beautiful, stately ships, Te come from ever the sea?, With every sail lull spread Te the glad, rejoicing breeze ! Ye come from the dusky East, Ye come from the golden West, As birds that out of the far-blue sky Fly each te Its sheltered nest. AU spoil of the earth ye bring ; Frem the Isles of lar Carthay, Frem the labled shores of the Orient, And realms mere rich than they. The prisened light et a thousand gems, The gleam el the virgin geld, Lustre el silver and sheen of pearl, Shut up in the narrow bold. Shawls from the loom? of Ispahan ; Ivery white as milk ; Shimmer of satin and rare brocade, And fold upon leld of bilk ; Gauzes that Indian maidens wear ; Spices and tare perfumes ; Fruits that held in their honeyed cups The wealth et the summer blooms. The bleed era thousand vines ; The cotton's drifted snow ; The fragant heartet the precious weeds That deep in the tropics grew ! The strength of the giant hills The might of the iron ere The golden corn and the yellow wheat, Frem earth's bread threshing fleer ! Yet, O yebeautilul ships ! The ship tliat comes net back, With flying pennant and swelling sail. Over yen shining track The ship that with all its freight went down Under tte deep, salt sea, The one that never may come telttud, Is worth far mere than ye ! Who can reckon its precious stores. Or measure the might have been 1 Who can tell what it held ter us The ship tliat will ne'er come In t Oh, richer than all the barks that fly Like bird train east and west. Is the one that never te mortal eye Returns lrein its silent quest. Julia C. R. Derr in CongregatienaUst. MY OLD VIOLIN. TORN FROM HIS HAND. A Jailer Maltreated and Farced te Surren der His Keys. A special despatch from Norwich, Coun. says : The news of a desperate attempt at jail breaking in Windham county, several miles te the north of this city, has just reached here. Yesterday morning Wil liam Haulon, James Reland and Themas Smith, who were awaiting trial in the Brooklyn jail for extousive burglaries in Willimantic, were let out of their cells with the lest of the prisoners for the purpose of washing. Awaiting a favorable opportunity, when Jailer Cox had his back turned, the three men knocked him down from behind, hurling him with such force en the stone fleer of the prison hall as te partially stun him. He, how ever, pluckily held fast te his keys and maintained for several minutes a violent struggle against fearful odds, the men threatening his life if he did net give them up. At length they were tern from his bands after these members had been ter ribly beaten. Then, again threaten ing' te kill him if he followed them, the trio leaped for liberty. A deep snow impeded their progress, and a prisoner, James Shirley, raising the alarm, a large posse of citizens at once ataited iu pursuit of and captured the misei cants alter a hard chase of three hours. The men made no resistance, being tired out and unarmed. They are believed te be New Yerk thrives, and when first arrested at Williamsport one of the factories was stepped that the hands might go out and aid in capturing them. People iu Windham county are breathing easier te-day. The matter has created much stir. Bird Observations. Sclins Greve Times. The same pair of bluebirds have for aeme years come te our let and raised two or three breeds of young every summer four birds at each hatching. After the first .breed can ily well, the birds all at once disappear. In ten days or two weeks the old couple return, build a new nest and batch another breed. Se seen .as they flan fly well they again all disappear. In October they all return te the old home, where they sport about a week or two, and all at once leave for the Seuth. Last fall they returned again in October eight in number showing that two were miss ing. Celd weather set in early, but still the bluebirds were about as late as the 24th of November, showing by their be havior that something was wrong. They lived mostly en dried grapes and the shells of grapes. "About Nev. 24, they all disap pearedthe weather getting tee severe for them. But about the middle of Decem ber two of the birds again put in an ap pearance and were about every morning till Dec. 22, when they were heard no mere. These two were either the Jest young ones or the old ones which had re turned from the far south in search of their lest effspiinjj. Where the young ones are taken te tuning summer, would be hard te flDd out ; but tliey are evidently taken te some place where they can take care of themselves ; and in the fall, pre paratory te leaving for a wanner climate, the old ones gather them all together, first at the place where they were born. The past year two mere were lest and that caused the trouble and delay. The Lewis town Gazette of January 5, 1881, says : " Twe bluebirds were flying about in the neighborhood of the Hendersen engine beuse en Thursday morning with the tlicr memeter below zero." These were no doubt the same birds that left here De cember 22, and struck out in the direction of Lewis town. ABSCONDED- A Justice of Peace In Berks 'Mysteriously Disappears. Nothing has yet been heard from Wil liam K. Haag, of Bhartlessville, Berks county, who mysteriously disappeared some days since. She is the mother of four children, two of whom she took along. It is thenght that the two have eloped. Haag is kDewn te have had do mestic difficulties.
