TUESDAY EVENING. JAM. 4, 1881. The Starry Heavens. Third Regular Meeting of Star Club. A full meeting of the Star club was held at tlie rooms of tue Christian association last evening. In addition te the numeri cal star list, which was increased te forty- sir, Mr. Frank Greist read a very interest ing paper en the planets, and the history of the advance in astronomical knowl edge in regard te them from the crude theories of olden times te the certain knowledge of the present. The star list was continued as fellows by Mr. J. P. Mc Caskey : The constellation familiarly known as "Jeb's Coffin," but niarkedu the charts as the Delphin, is a faint' group lying be tween the Eagle and the Great Square of Pegasus. Altair of the EaIe, it will be remembered, is at the southern angle of the triangle which includes the Northern Cress. The star in the head of the Dol Del phin, ncarcst Gicuah in the Northern Cress, is Svalezin; while Retancw is nearest Altair. Wc turn new te the northwest and leek at one or mere of the constella tions in this quarter. A line drawn from Deneb, in the head of the Northern Cress, te the North Star will determine the posi tion of the constellation Ccphcus. and fix its principal stars. The two stars Aldcr amin and Alphirk He a little off this line, the former being nearer Deneb, and the latter about eight degrcesdistant, towards the North Star. The third star named in this constellation is Errai, which may be determined by a triangle, nearly isosceles, having Alphirk and the North Star at the extremities of its bases aud Errai at its vertex towards the W formed by the principal stars in Cassiopeia's Chair. Te fix the head of the Dragen, an irreg ular quadrilateral, wc draw a line from Vega te the North Star, aud the first point in the position of our group is de termined, the head being en the side of our line toward the Gieat Dipper, aud net far from Vega. The star nearest Vega is Etanin, the next, in a straight line toward the first in the handle of the Great Dipper, is Itast.iban, the next, a faint star in the same direction is El Rakis. The Dragen may new be traced by a line of stars curv ing upward and backward, toward Aldcr amin and Alphirk. It then returns pass ing between the two Dippers and almost enclesiug the Little Dipper. As it passes around the bowl of the Little Dipper, half way between this and the second star in the handle of the Great Hipper wc have Thuban, the old North Star of 4,000 years age. The Great Dipper also known as "The Plough" and 'Charles's Wain" in the constellation of the Great Bear, is a widely known group of stars in the circunipelar region of the heavens. It :ev lies rather low in the horizon in the early evening. The first star in the handle is IScnctnasch ; the second, several degrees distant, is Mi zar, near which is the star-point Alcer ; Alioth is the third in the handle, and is next the bowl of the Dipper ; Megrcz is the first star in the bowl, and 1'had is the first star in the bottom of the bowl ; Mcrak is eight degrees from Pliad and five degrees from Dublic, which is the last in the bowl. The last two named are called " The Pointers," because they point out Polaris, the North Star, nearly thirty de grees distant. The North Star is in the extremity of the handle of the Little Dipper, which curves downward toward the handle of the Great Dipper. The two brightest stars in the bowl are Kechab and Phcrkad, known as "The Guards" te the pole. The remaining stars of the handle aud bowl are of faint brilliancy. Our star list fertius evening is therefere: Ne. 27, Svalezin ; 28, Retancw ; 29, Al deramin; 510, Alphirk; 31, Errai; 32, Etanin ; 33, Rastabaii ; 34, El ltakis ; 35, Thuban ; 30, llcuetnasch : 37, Mizar ; 38, Alcer; 39, Alioth ; 40, Megrcz ; 41, L'had; 42, Mcrak ; 43, Dubhc ; 14, Polaris the North Star ; 45, Kechab, and 4C, Phcr kad. The liist two are in the Dragen : the next three in Cephcns ; next four iu the Dragen ; next eight in the Great Dip per, and the last three in the Little Dip per.
