" T.c ' 'i-;.X--- V-' --j- -VJt; S?'5. v r " LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER. SATURDAY AUGUST 7. 1880. " - ML. " Eancaster intelligencer. 8ATUBDAY EVENING, AUGUST 7,1880. Literary Wages. Before 1850 the historian Prescott re ceived a hundred thousand dollars for his "Life of Napeleon," and twenty-five thousand each te Sir James Mackintosh and Lingard for their histories of England. It is stated that Thiers received four hundred thousand dollars for his histories, and for one edition of his great work Macaulay received a check of twenty thousand pounds a transaction, he re marks, " quite unparallcd in the history of the book trade," and which suggested " thoughts of going te the chancellor of the exchequer, and bidding for the next lean." Frem fiction as well as from history large amounts have been de rived. It is estimated that Scott's novels produced for the copyright at least one and a quarter millions dollars; and for each of his stories Bulwer received from five thousand te six thousand. Though Dumas, the elder, died worth hardly a seu, he had for each of several years enjoyed an income of fifty thousand dollars from his romances. Fer the advance sheets of " Daniel Derenda" Harper & Bre.'s paid Gcorgie Eliet ten thousand, five hundred dollars. Peets have failed te win that large degree of veneration whieh a few histo rians and novelists have enjoyed; yet Byren commercially among the most suc- cessiui ei modern pacts received a Hun dred thousand dollars for his works, and Moere fifteen thousand for "Lalla Heeka." But his "Life of Byren" put twenty thousand into his purse. In 1855, when Harriet Martineau was writing her "Au tobiography," she calculated she had earned by her works "semewhere about ten thousand pounds." Yes, en the ether side, net a few authors of permanent fame have earned only the merest pittance by their writings. It is notorious that Hilten sold the "Paradise Lest " for five pounds, and that the copy right of the editions disposed of for the first fifty years hucccccdiug its publication was small. Fer less than fifteen hundred dollars Drydcn sold Tenson ten thousand verses. Spencer lived in poverty. Cer vantes wanted bread. Only forty-five copies of Hume's history was bought in the first year of its issue. Jehnsen wrote "llassclas" in the evenings of a Bingle week, te "defray the expenses of his mother's funeral and pay some little debts which hhe had left," and received for it one hundred and twenty-five pounds, a large price compared te the labor of itB composition, yet, in respect te its literary worth and popularity, a very small sum. But for the " Vicar of Wakefield," which Jehnsen sold for Goldsmith, the publisher, paid only sixty pounds. Fer "Eveline" Fanny Burney (Madam D' Arblay), received twenty pounds. But in our own country arc numerous examples of ill-paid authors. Fer many years Wordsworth's poems did net bring him mere than a hundred pounds. Ncither Goethe nor Coleridge gained a livelihood from books. Twelve years were needed te dispose of five hun dred copies of Mr. Emersen's " Nature ;" and only recently have any of his books approached a remunerative sale. Irving was ncrrly seventy before the revenue from his books met the expenses of his simple life at Sunnyside. Bay ard Tayler said that Bryant could net buy a modest heuse with all he had received from his poems ; and of his own translation of "Faust," Mr. Tayler wrote, that though he gave te it the best time of five or six years, it had yielded him only as much as a fortnight's lecturing tour. If Mr. Ruskin had net possessed a private fortune, some of his most striking works could net have been published. In respect te the compensation derived from hooks of literary merit the contrasts arc as deep as with these of great worth. Many sensational novels prove a rich mine te their authors. Mrs. Mary Agnes Flem ing received five thousand dollars for each of her late stories published as serials, be sides holding the right of their publication in a volume. But the books of some writ ers of the class of which Mrs. Fleming is the tyiKi pay hardly mere than the expenses of publication. MEDICAL. X Geed Preaching.
